Persona 5 is the 6th mainline persona game and the followup to Persona 4. The story is not connected to Persona 4 in any way, though a poster for Rise's newest album or a TV commercial for the Amagi Inn can't be ruled out.

Read Captain Baal's Persona 5 OP if you want a good rundown of the characters and story.

TL/DR:
The main character is a high school student who came across a woman being assaulted. The protagonist stops the assault by knocking the guy over but he turned out to be an important person. The attacker pressed charges and he was sentenced to probation. Because of this he goes to live with his parent's friend in Tokyo. However, things happen and he and his new friends become phantom thieves, changing evil people's hearts by stealing their most prized possession. The story begins with a casino heist where the protagonist is caught after a daring escape. He is brought to an interrogation room and the story is told through a number of flashbacks. Who betrayed the team? How will he escape? What will the Hawaii episode look like? Will he romance one of the older ladies? Aren't you tired? You should go to sleep.

I don't want to be one of those people but I'm somewhat worried about the adaptation, the intro is really good at setting the tone in the game but the prologue seems somewhat rushed.
On the other hand the game has some weird pacing problems so maybe the anime will smooth them out.

There are 6 proper dungeons plus the final boss so that leaves the animators with 5 episodes to play with. I figure the school trip will take up one episode so that leaves 3-4 episodes of filler. Something is going to be cut, but hopefully they create something good for the Persona 5 enhanced version.

Yeah I'm hoping the anime can make me give a drat about Haru as a character instead of being "that girl who joins near the end and is a real pain in the rear end to max out"

I thought this was confirmed at 24 episodes? 12 would be a hatchet job.

I'll give it a watch because I don't want to spend 1000 hours on the game.

I thought it was good. I'm sure there are going to be a lot of people complaining they changed some things but it's not bad for a first episode.

I wonder how lost people who haven't played the game are though, they skipped some setup to get to Ren's awakening faster.

It was pretty good, and I think it's great that they went pretty fast to Ren's awakening. I lol'd at the Kamoshida Spike.

tbh I felt like they barely changed anything. It's not bad at all but it very much just gave me a sense of "yep that's what happened in that cutscene alright." Hopefully once they get past the initial setup they'll have some room to get more creative with things.

I liked the first ep, it almost feels like cheating to use the music from the game. It's so loving good and definitely a mark in the anime's favor too.

I'm the lead trumpet player, playing loud and high is all I know how to do.

I miss the P4A songs and themes, but understand that those are really high marks to surpass.

Good first ep, just confusing enough to pique interest, but straightforward enough to keep anime-viewers included.

I'm not a fan of how dramatically they changed how Joker got caught, but this was a pretty alright start. Liked the credits music (that might be the OP but idk for sure)

Not a bad start, don't remember if they were in the game or not but I did like the little P4 references they threw in (they referenced Naoto early on and there was a poster of Rise later in the same scene). I've enjoyed all the other Persona anime they've put out (though Trinity Soul and Golden a bit less than the others) so I'll definitely be following this.

How good were the P3 and P4 animations at covering the games' stories? Persona has been a series that interests me in the writing and setting and poo poo, but p3 was just way too grindy for me.

They're obviously abridged from the game versions but they still work well enough and manage to get the point across. In fact, if you're interested in the story but don't have the patience to put up with the game itself watching the anime is probably the best way to go.

As far as the main story line goes, just fine. The P4 anime touches on some of the social links, but the P3 movies really only have time to cover them in a series of montages, The P4 Golden anime covers the entirety of the Marie (Aeon) social link, plus some other extra stuff from the Golden remake.

There's also Persona Trinity Soul, an original story that serves as kind of a pseudo (though I believe also non-canon) sequel to Persona 3. It's ok (at best) but not particularly worth tracking down unless you're really curious.

The Rise poster is definitely in the game, you can even get a version of it to decorate your room with.

They were decent and a good alt if you don't have a vita for P4:G. They did help give Yu a personality and how he was clearly suffering from his insane scheduling. Meanwhile the P3 movies felt rushed but nice animation and a good summary of major events in-game.

I don't have a vita or ps2 anymore, so mostly waiting in vain for a ps4 port one day.

Trinity Soul was very much the opposite of OK. It had some neat ideas but was mostly recycled P3 concepts executed worse.

People got apathy syndrome 10 years ago, the same time P3 happened! Remember that? Guess what, it had nothing to do with P3 and was caused by some kind of “whale” that isn’t explained. I think the P3 cast appears as silhouettes once. Except for Akihiko! Remember him? Our good old fighter Akihiko. Can’t wait to see him beat up the bad guys! Nope, he’s a police chief trying to cover up Personas and can’t use his anymore because he’s an adult. Yup, that’s a thing. The only way the main character’s adult brother can use his is by taking suppressant pills for some reason.

And it was, above all, boring. The soundtrack by Taku Iwasaki of Gurren Lagann/Soul Eater fame and was fantastic though!

Taku Iwasaki making a good soundtrack is like the sun rising every day. You take it for granted. I mean, he also did the absolutely fan-drat-tastic OST for Mahouka, which was also a dumpster fire.

As far as P5, it was an ok first episode.

This was also exactly a plot point in Persona 3.

I'm not saying it's a good one but Trinity Soul did not invent this

The suppressants were, but they were for surpressing personas so they wouldn’t kill you, not letting you use them once you’re out of high school.

My final form.
The first episode was a pretty decent adaption. It felt a little rushed, but I don't know how you have a fun show without rushing the game's intro. Persona games take a long time to get going. I did like the little hints at a couple of the confidants (Temperance especially), subtle but it will be fun to see them play out.

Aw, no Life Will Change in the opening scene? :saddowns:

The episode felt a little rushed overall, but I understand they had to trim down a lot of stuff for the sake of pacing. One change I did like was that Akira Ren actually had a brief interaction with Takamaki instead of just staring at her like some goony weirdo.
