it's round, like always

OK first of all:

Hello sports fans and welcome back to day 2 of knockout football here at The Hublot Forum of Friendship. After a rollercoaster Day 1 of knockouts, Mbappe shows the hype is justified, Pavard scores a banger, Cavani dived a lot but carried Uruguay through, and Messi and Ronaldo share a plane home. VAR has been mostly absent and no extra time or penalties so far. Todays games should be boring less frenetic than yesterday, maybe even going to ET.

Today's two games are:
Spain vs Russia, 15:00 BST, 17:00 local time, Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow.
Croatia vs Denmark, 19:00 BST, 21:00 local time, Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

Referee: KUIPERS Bjorn - NED
Assistant Referee 1: VAN ROEKEL Sander - NED
Assistant Referee 2: ZEINSTRA Erwin - NED
Fourth official: TURPIN Clement - FRA

Video Assistant Referee: MAKKELIE Danny - NED
Assistant VAR 1: BORSCH Mark - GER
Assistant VAR 2: GIL Pawel - POL
Assistant VAR 3: ZWAYER Felix - GER

Spain qualified through the Group Stage at the top of their table, although it was an unconvincing start and Russia will look to take full advantage of Spain's poor record of facing host nations. Cheryshev has scored 3 times so far, equalling Costa, Mbappe and Cavani. Spain have looked poor defensively, especially so from set-pieces, and conceded 5 in their group, Hierro, Carvajal and Isco will need to improve their performances as Russia seek to exploit this. Despite defensive concerns, I think Spain go into this game as clear favourites and should progress to the quarter finals.
*This will be Spain's fifth meeting with a World Cup host and they are yet to record a win. Most recently they lost on penalties against Korea in 2002.

Referee: PITANA Nestor - ARG
Assistant Referee 1: MAIDANA Hernan - ARG
Assistant Referee 2: BELATTI Juan Pablo - ARG
Fourth official: CACERES Enrique - PAR

Video Assistant Referee: VIGLIANO Mauro - ARG
Assistant VAR 1: DIAZ Roberto - ESP
Assistant VAR 2: VARGAS Gery - BOL
Assistant VAR 3: ORSATO Daniele - ITA

These two sides have met five times, but haven't crossed paths for 14 years now. Their only competitive meetings all came in a flurry of 15 months, starting in Euro 96. Goblin King Modric & Friends have been one of the surprise sensations of the tournament so far, winning all 3 of their group games. Optimism is high that they will equal or maybe surpass their best ever world cup performance (3rd in france 98). It's likely that Zlatko Dalic will be content to make no changes to a lineup that saw off Argentina, though you might see Badelj make it onto the starting lineup following an impressive shift against Iceland. Denmark go into this game as underdogs, although themselves are unbeaten in 18 games, and Poulsen is available upfront once again having served a suspension.
*Christian Eriksen covered 36 kilometres in the group phase matches, more than any other player in the competition.

This post brought to you by leftover pizza from last night, also if somebody could put the coffee on that'd be great thanks.

(I'm travelling for work next week so somebody else pick up the MDT's tia)

Can't wait for Russia to win in penalties after VAR incorrectly overturns two penalties for Spain

I think Russia and Croatia will advance. Certain people in the Spanish team are just too old, while Russia can count on home team advantage(s).

I'm curious if Croatia are really as good as they seemed. They shouldn't have too much of a problem to see of Denmark.

I think Russia are the favourites today, Spain has struggled a lot against bad opposition. They've looked very similar to Germany, just a bit luckier scoring goals and with the results from the other teams in their group

Spain is bad but Russia will not win unless The Fix Is In. They’re complete garbage who rode a home crowd to qualification over the two worst teams in the entire tournament.

Kuzyaev and Kudryashov in.

Interesting.

The former could work, but the latter concerns me greatly (although it's not like there are better options)

It looks like there will be 3 CBs and they'll park the bus from the very start. No way this could backfire horribly

E: now that said, De Gea is starting...

It is. I can only suggest looking up the FIFA country codes to avoid making this mistake. Thankfully, apart from Espanol (ESP) and Confederation Suisse (SUI), the rest is pretty straightforward, except for Japan (JPN) perhaps.

I don't know who I want to win in the Spain - Russia game. Maybe a giant sink hole could open on the pitch and swallow both teams? That'd be cool. Then they could have Senegal or Nigeria take their place.

Nature Abhors A Vacuum

Spain - Russia
Ref: Bjorn Kuipers (NED)
VAR: Danny Makkelie (NED)

Did Egypt - Uruguay and Brazil - Costa Rica. Don't really have a lot to add about him. He always works deep in the Champions League, considered one of UEFA's top guys, good pair of hands and probably a good match to keep himself clean on to set himself up for a semi or the final.

Croatia - Denmark
Ref: Nestor Pitana (ARG)
VAR: Mauro Vigliano (ARG)

Had Russia - Saudia Arabia and Mexico - Sweden. Couple of strange calls in that Mexico - Sweden game but Sweden won comfortably so no one really cares. Should be fine. One of CONMEBOL's top two, probably between him and Ricci.

These are harder to write when the referees they're using are the more competent ones who have more or less kept themselves clean.
