My 2018 goals were to keep tracking my expenses, stick to the budget, max our IRAs, and increase the contributions to our brokerage. Success, mostly.

Went way over budget in a couple categories: Pets (dog dental, serious health issues/euthanasia for elderly cat), Shopping (new laptop), Gaming (2017 deja vu... no excuse). On the bright side, we were under budget in enough categories that it was a net "in the green" by over $300/month, even accounting for savings contributions.

Nixed the stretch goal (bathroom remodel) in favor of a 2 week vacation to Italy. No ragrets.

We also finally cut the cord and dropped cable entirely late last year. Immediately got a better internet package, and soon an antenna and some Amazon Fire TV stuff will arrive in the mail for us to figure out. All told we will probably spend the same in 2019 for TV/Internet/Streaming as we did in 2018, but all that equipment is a one-time expense instead of a subscription. To 2020! gently caress AT&T! :woop:

2019 Goals:

Keep tracking; stick to budget as best we can. Am learning year after year that this is hard to predict, but with enough wiggle room it ends up alright.
Bump IRA contributions to the new limit, increase brokerage auto-contributions by 17%
Figure out if/where I can move my SEP account since Ameriprise sucks. It's hard to find info online about SEPs if you're an employee, not company owner.

Stretch goal: Maybe actually do that master bath remodel this time. I've only been talking about it for 5 years. Tub, floor, cabinets/countertop.

- save up 400$ for bonsai auction and keep first CC balance zeroed, If that card has a balance no auction allowed. Balance transfers to my other card are not allowed.

By March:
- zero CC balances! ZERO
- determine whether a refi on student loans would be a good idea or not

By May:
- if roommates are moving out, save up 3k for potential moving and deposit expenses
- if roomates are all signing the lease, destroy PLUS loan for good

By end of Nov:
- bring down student loan balances by at least 10k
- have at least 4k in emergency savings

These should all be concrete and doable if nothing explodes (something always explodes)

oh and end the year with zero CC balances.

Yep - tree auction. I'm looking in the range of around 100$ for decent material but styled trees, especially from Japan, can go for four figures or even more. Bonsai's one of those hobbies that can be insanely expensive if you want it to be - most of the members of my club are retired and this is what they do instead of say, collecting vintage cars and fixing them up. Probably there won't be anything cheap enough for my budget but there's a consignment sale after for items that didn't sell or weren't nice enough to auction.

Hi, I welcome you to participate in this thread, but in general your goals ought to be at least something you have control over. The loose exception to this is that you'll see some of us make mention of net worth goals - however, these are significantly less important than both savings and expense-related ones. It's not helpful for me to make a goal saying, "Earn 20% RoR investing in the market this year" because that goal is largely outside of my control, but saying, "Invest $10,000 in the market" is, because I can choose to spend less/make an effort to make more in order to ensure that happens. It would be helpful to set out exact numbers you intend to use to speculate on cryptocurrency as your goal, rather than your preferred outcome for doing so.

I'll be moving back to live with the family after living by myself for a while, and have saved a reasonable amount by myself. This will allow me to save approximately 70% of my post tax income.

The goal will be to save at least 70% of every post tax paycheck, with saving at least 30k being on the books. There will be some expenses I cant get around (car rego, insurance, tooth crowns/root canals) but even with these I should be able to make it. The long term goal is to save for a house, which I'll probably buy within 4-5 years. It won't be expensive, and I'll aim to have it paid off before I'm 40 (currently 31).

Edit: I'll also be salary sacrificing $100 per fortnight into my super, which my employer currently pays about $11.5k into. Once the house is paid I'll max out my super to 25k.

Do you think I've got the goods Bubblegum? Cuz I am INTO this stuff!

January update

2019 Financial Goals:
  • Max Roth IRAs Done
  • Meet company matches on HSA and 401k On track
  • 50/month into kids' 529s On track
  • Consolidate my HSA funds into a single place that doesn't suck
  • Help my wife make money on Etsy. She quit her job, holidays are over, and the kids are in daycare 3 days a week. No excuses from either of us on this anymore
  • Perform an analysis of my retirement window. It's still ~20 years out, but I want to nail down if it's closer to 50 or closer to 70. And if closer to 70, figure out what I can do to make it closer to 50. And not full retirement, but more of a FI retirement Done*
  • Consider using a more granular expenditure tracker than what I have Excel + Mint setup to do. I'm still not sure I want to sink the time into tracking spending at a granular level, but I like the idea of it, so I want to look into it a bit more Done**
  • Figure out cost of and start saving for Australia trip for my dad's 65th

2019 Personal Goals:
  • Take at least 1 vacation day per month. The intent would be to use this to do whatever: catch up on house chores, take the kids to a local attraction when it's not a weekend, be lazy, go on an actual vacation, etc. - but I would be completely dark from work (phone off and laptop shut), which I'm very bad at when I'm home This month, I took a day to analyze our retirement goals and finances. I also caught up on The Good Place with my wife (such a great show). I did take one 15 minute call with my boss, so kinda failed.
  • Make a piece of software that is mine. Very loose goal here, but I want to make something outside of what I make at work
  • Clean up the basement. We keep pushing this off. It needs to happen. There'd be so much more play space down there for the kids
  • Serious reflection on hobbies. 2 kids = limited free time. I need to cut hobbies, so I quit having FOMO on hobbies I'm not doing while I'm doing other hobbies

* During my vacation day, I read up a lot on FIRE approaches and how it would apply to our life goals. I also spent some time using a few different FIRE calculators (firecalc is my favorite, by far) to analyze various scenarios. A realistic FIRE age with my current estimates would be 56. I will definitely revisit this annually because it's worth the time, and life changes quickly (raises, no more daycare, mortgage paid in full, unexpected emergencies, etc.).

** It turns out I'm an idiot and was double charging credit card line items against my budget in Mint. I had been frustrated at Mint for some time because we were always going over budget, and it just didn't seem right to me. But money kept increasing in the bank account, and my Excel sheet was accurate, so I just figured Mint wasn't a good application and didn't have the time to really look into it. This was one of the things I looked into on my vacation day this month. I was including the individual credit card line items against my budget, but also was including the payoff of the credit card bill (due to how I had linked my accounts). So instead of ~1500 a month, Mint was tracking it as ~3000. Now that I have that sorted out, I'm not as mad at Mint and will continue to use it. If the ads start annoying me more, I might reconsider this decision.

2019 Goals:
1) Max Roth IRA $1,500 in
2) Up 401k from 10% to at least 13%. Stretch is 15% but we'll see what kind of raise I get this year. No progress
3) Get Emergency fund to $12,500 At $10,500
4) Get house down payment fund to $5000 Up to $2225
5) Get car down payment fund to $3000 (Not planning on getting a car for a few years yet, but good to start saving early) Up to $2355
6) Keep fast food spending under $175 for the year (Currently at $228 for 2018, obviously not breaking the bank, still something to strive for). Spent $15.21 in January. Need to cut back just a little bit more.
7) Continue no revolving credit card debt. Still going strong

....

Non-financial goals:
1) Read 1 book a month (lol). Didn't finish the first book yet, but close. Got a second one lined up
2) Get down to 150 pounds. I think this is where I started 2018, and my goal was to get to 143, but that didn't happen. Currently sitting at 160 as of this morning. Still at 160 but I take this as success given holiday travels and other over eating events that happened this month.
3) Just like last year, go on a tropical vacation somewhere. Didn't happen last year, but some CC rewards are likely to make it happen this year.Nothing planned

Also, made a reservation for a first time homebuyers seminar that my credit union does every so often just to get some info.

-I have a shot at a value-based bonus (which given my pattern, I won't get much, but hey it's something to shoot for!)
-My mother's health is deteriorating due to dementia, and at some point, we'll have to deal with my family on that front. Not fun.
-My daughter is getting old enough to appreciate the basics of finance, and I want her to start on solid ground.
-We're actually filling in slots at work, so my work-life balance has the potential to be much better from now on.

Enough of the E/N, here's the goals in no particular order!

1. Max out Retirement plans (limit raises :woop:) On Target

2. Max the HSA later, when I do a lump sum

3. Maintain 529 contributions On Target

4. Keep current car as long as possible, but set aside "next car" fund. If I can get decent used, thinking 15k. Otherwise it's 25k new. 0% financing would be awesome.
