the manga's also viewable at the usual places. the art also suffers in the last leg but i think that's mainly because covid got some of itagaki's assistants. covid seemed to hit the production staff for season 2 of the anime as well, because it's a lot more workmanlike than the first, which i think is some of studio orange's best work

You're almost selling me on checking it out if it can make Game of Thrones' last season collapse seem quaint in comparison. I'm always in the mood for enjoying a good implosion.

It's not really the same type of implosion. GOT just limped to a really dumb ending for its plot, Beastars basically completely changes genres and becomes a weird action battle shonen. Which means 2/3 of the main characters from the first half fall off in relevancy.

even that's kind of misrepresenting it, since beastars starts as a cracked take on high-school romance, then becomes a gritty yakuza story, then back to high school, then both at once, and then becomes a cat-and-mouse murder mystery with the rest still happening in the background. this is all in the first hundred chapters when quality is still at its peak

IShallRiseAgain

Well ain't that precious?

The genre change isn't the main problem with the last part of Beastars. The issue is that its just endless plot arcs that go nowhere, the author has no idea what to do with Haru, and the antagonist completely takes over the plot and has ridiculous amounts of plot armor.

God, BNA is so frustrating because it starts out by looking really cool and making you think that it's gonna say something about racism or body dysmorphia or transgenderism and then after spending all of its budget on the pilot episode, it quickly decides its insightful commentary is gonna be a deep hearty belch and it was nothing more than just an excuse for Studio Trigger to create another mascot character for the internet to go nuts over, this time appealing to furries instead of their usual stock of gooners.

They need to stop giving the Kill la Kill writer work.

Generally it's there to provide a dramatic way to have the oppressed underclass rise up or manipulated in a way that avoids the risk of trying to imply they are actually Naturally Bad without having to get into the actual politics of the situation.

SlothfulCobra

Not really the first time I've heard of a manga making that particular genre jump at the end. I feel like it's rare for a manga or anime to really stick the landing, often it kinda loses its way at some point and then there's a rapid clumsy scramble towards the finish out of nowhere that sometimes feels the need to recontextualize everything.

Which is only really notable because often anime provides more of an illusion of momentum and constantly moving forward even if doesn't have an endgame in mind. When a status quo show ends, it usually doesn't have a rats nest of dangling plot threads to tie up in a limited time, and it doesn't need that much space to get a run up to do the ending.

The best part of Beastars imo is the stop-motion intro and theme song which openly apes Cowboy Bebop stylistically.

(Of course they completely changed it in S2)

my suggestion for beastars fans is to start reading Beast Complex which was also by Paru; they released three volumes in english now and there are a few extra chapters, with even some cameos from the main series. There are a bunch of one-shot chapters which just go insane and they are all amazing.

He wants to do neither, the Rabbit wants to gently caress him because when it comes to sex, she's the predator in the relationship. It's one of the series' more ingenuous twists.

Again, great twist, the nerdy virgin wolf is the prey to a bunch of otherwise prey species who are after him sexually. I love how all the promo stuff for it is like "Oh, is he gonna eat the rabbit?" and then the show is straight up "lol no, the rabbit is going to devour HIM".

Yeah all the furries i know like their animals because they are cool or sexy or neat or whatever and most of the work is just various types of porn or fantasy art or etc. most don’t do some special rule stuff or are going for anything deep. Most oc stuff are either human but animal or cartoon character.

she just gets forgotten, like 90% of the rest of the cast. once the second half’s main villain shows up he dominates the story to the point where there’s barely a scene or conversation that doesn’t involve him. Juno doesn’t fit that, so out she goes

Yeah that sucks. I like a lot of the characters so far, maybe the anime will tweak some of that. I hate when that poo poo happens in media, where the author gets bored and makes up some joker knock off that sucks all the air out of the room. Like I get you want an actual threat or whatever but like it’s always some ultra competent Ramsay Bolton character or joker knock off psycho who is clearly a mad dog dipshit but is always 20 steps ahead or whatever. It’s never anything interesting.

I need to watch Cowboy Bebop again because I loved most of it when it was new 20+ years ago primarily because it was an intimate, engrossing character drama with a tiny ensemble cast and didn't have a megacompetent anime villain with swooping windswept hair standing on a cliffside being menacing all the time. And then lo and behold, one shows up and I'm like fffuuuuu

vicious has a really small role in the show overall (only five episodes, with two of them being two-parters) and works fine for what he is

idk. i dont mind grand villians and poo poo but they are rarely done right. it seems like they either overstay their welcome eat up the entire plot, overstay their welcome and just become a weird annoyance, die in a stupid way or get redeemed badly or have a good arc and leave the plot/die/redeemed in a good way.
Mind you, i am "new" to anime. the most i watched was yugioh and digimon and dbz when i was 12. I tried to get into kingdom hearts to impress a girl in high school.

Disney probably would prefer not having creepy weirdos being extremely horny about a children's cartoon. Not even whales can outspend hordes of children. The beastars anime is mostly just to sell volumes of the manga, so whales are worthless to them.

It's a very common dynamic in a lot of fiction about worlds full of anthropomorphic animal characters to make the meat eating animals into villains while the protagonists or even the common people are likely to be mostly herbivores. Which I guess is fairly logical when you're taking from basic animal stereotypes to set up your characters, and obviously animals that require to kill eachother to survive can't peacefully coexist as sentient beings.

Except if a character's basic nature from birth makes them a villain, that dramatically reduces room for nuance and dynamics. It also doesn't really reflect any real-world dynamics, because generally in the real world there's not a hard and fast carnivore/herbivore separation, while there are some obligate carnivores, it's biologically pretty simple for any animal species to process meat if the opportunity rises. Sometimes deer or turtles will kill and eat birds, it just happens. All the animal species are not friends with eachother, it's rare that they'll even be sociable within their own species. Ocean life is even weirder when people try to think in those terms, because most fish eat other fish, there's seldom a real line. There's a lot of sedentary animals that seem like plants, and while it seems harmless for creatures to chow down on plankton, a lot of fish species start small enough to get eaten by plankton eaters.
