https://i.imgur.com/LIyvDtc.mp4 Welcome to the 2020 thread for the Australian Football League and Australian Football League Women's; the national top-tier competitions of Australian Rules Football. What is AFL? This 5 minute video aimed at Americans should hopefully explain the basics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMZYZcoAcU0 <<<< watch this Footy, as it is known to the masses, is a fast-paced, full contact, 360 degree game which takes place on a truly massive (and non-standard sized) field of turf with 18 players on both teams chasing a leather ball around the place which can lead to some big hits and some impressive displays of skills. It is also one of the highest attended domestic sports league in the world with over 1 million paid up members (think seat/season pass holders) in Australia (Population 25 million) with many more spectators. https://i.imgur.com/OOSZEAH.gifv A brief history Australian football was devised around the Victorian gold rush years as something for cricketers to "keep fit" over summer, with the rules inspired by Marngrook, a game played by the indigenous peoples of Western Victoria. The first "organised" game of this new code was played out in 1858. As it existed then was basically dozens of players chasing the ball around a huge paddock, before the rules got refined to more suited to being played on cricket ovals. This lead to the Victorian Football Association (VFA) being formed soon after - matches were initially arranged on an ad-hoc basis, but soon took on a league structure. Around this time the game spread to the other states, having had the most impact in South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. The Victorian Football League (VFL) was established by eight Melbourne teams in 1897 as a breakaway of the VFA, which remained as the second-tier league in Victoria. The VFL remained a Victorian-based competition for most of its history, with SA and WA also hosting strong state leagues, as well as numerous suburban country leagues, however with the money and crowds concentrated in Melbourne, this caused a drift of the better players to the VFL through the 1960s and 70s. There was some state vs state competition, more on that below. Eventually the VFL began to expand interstate with the relocation of South Melbourne to Sydney in 1982, with subsequent expansions in 1987 to West Coast in Perth and the Brisbane Bears in Gold Coast (they moved into Brisbane a few years latter). While the main aim was to establish the national competition with an eye to TV rights, half the Victorian teams were flat broke so the license fees raised from the expenses were used to bail them out. With The Adelaide Crows in 1990, the VFL changed its name to the Australian Football League to reflect the national competition. The next new entrants were Fremantle in 1995, Port Adelaide in 1997, while Fitzroy "merged" with the Bears to become the Brisbane Lions. The current VFL is essentially the old VFA with both local standalone teams and reserves teams of the Victorian AFL clubs. Likewise the SANFL and WAFL have much the same status, along with the NEAFL which covers NSW, Queensland, the ACT (Canberra) and the Northern Territory. In the early 2010s, the Gold Coast Suns and Greater Western Sydney Giants were added to the comp, so every mainland state now has at least two clubs, while Tasmania, which is football mad but also kind of poor, gets to watch a few games a year hosted by Hawthorn (in Launceston) and North Melbourne (in Hobart). I'm sure you found all this fascinating to read. Most recently the biggest threat to the league's continued existence is Gillon McLachlan and league Manager of Football Operations Steve Hocking coming up with stupid brainwaves that no-one really wants, like AFLX (which has finally died in the arse), 17-5 (which proposes to make the last five rounds of the home-and-away season completely irrelevant) and shortened half-time breaks because who gives a poo poo about everyone at the game lining up for a pee? https://i.imgur.com/ajIwnfj.mp4 What the gently caress is going on? The aim of the game is to win possession on the ball and kick it through the middle two set of big white sticks, which will earn you 6 points. If you kick it between the tall and the little post or the ball hits the goal post or is touched by any player going across the goal line it is worth 1 point. At the start of every quarter (20 minutes + time on, usually 30m all up) and after a goal has been scored the ball is brought to the middle for a ball up/centre bounce where two ruckmen will try to tap the ball to the advantage of their teammates, think of a basketball jump ball. The two main legal ways of passing the ball are via kicking and handballing, in any direction - there are no offside rules. If a player takes a mark (catch) at least 15m away from a kick which has not been touched by another player or has hit the ground an umpire awards a free kick, allowing the player to either play on or collect themselves for a few seconds to take an uninterrupted kick. Hand balling is punching the ball with a closed fist out of the palm of your other hand, players are not allowed to throw the ball and will have a free kick awarded against them if they do. It is legal to tackle an opponent with the ball between the shoulders and the knees. If successful and the opposing player was run down or had prior opportunity to dispose of the ball but didn't, a free kick is rewarded. Usually the crowd will advise the umpires that someone was holding the "BALLLLL". Otherwise if the ball gets tied up, the umpire will throw the ball up for t Oh yeah, you have to bounce (or ground) the ball every 15 meters if you're running, being an oval ball it does not bounce quite like a basketball. For more information read the general rules and composition of matches here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_rules_football#Laws_of_the_game Some marks are more spectacular than others, so being Australian we obviously call them speccys or screamers. Yes, you can stand on peoples backs if you're legitimately going for the ball. https://i.imgur.com/EkmYHeX.mp4 The structure of the competition which runs from March to September/October is thus: 18 teams, 23 rounds of football (including a byes for each team), the top 8 teams get to play in the finals. The top 4 teams on the ladder get a double chance to stay in if they lose in the first week, and everyone else does elimination finals from the get go. The final 2 teams play in the Grand Final for the Premiership held in the last weekend of September or the first weekend of October depending which week the season starts. https://i.imgur.com/HQrI0gU.mp4 AFLW The first season of the national women's competition kicked off in 2017 with 8 teams which are all aligned with the existing men's teams (see below). In 2019 it expanded to 10 teams and the upcoming 2020 season will see the introduction of 4 more expansion team to bring the total to 14. It is a semi-professional competition running during the summer months with players only having 5 months long contracts and training in the evening after schooling or fulltime work, they aren't paid much either with the maximum player payment set between $13,400 and $24,600, compared to the men who are paid between $100,000-$1,300,000 per season. The 2020 AFLW season kicks off 9th February. The two conferences of 7 teams play 8 weeks of matches, including 2 against teams from the other conference. The finals now go for 3 weeks with elimination and preliminary final stages before the grand final. See the third post of the thread for AFLW season 2019 information. https://i.imgur.com/RgY4KCz.mp4 State of Origin (a footnote) In the ooold days, the state leagues used to send representative teams to play each other fairly regularly, sometimes in carnivals. Victoria, SA and WA were the traditional powers, with Tasmania usually being able to put together a reasonable team. Before 1977 they could pick any player playing in their league so the VFL teams often included a few native Croweaters and Sandgropers. Starting from 1977 the state games continued but now the players could only play for their "state of origin", i.e. where they had played their junior football. (The funniest SoO result was when NSW defeated Victoria in 1990, although the "origin" rules where fudged a bit as Sydney Swans players could be picked for the NSW side to bolster the actual locals from the south of NSW where Aussie rules is pretty strong.) You may be thinking that sounds familiar, but isn't State of Origin a rugby thing? Well, the rugby league State of Origin started in 1980 on the same principles - there were a lot of Queensland players playing in the NSWRFL competition, so the SoO rules evened things up - more so in fact, since the Queenslanders have generally dominated the series since. There's also a bit more fizz as the Blues and Maroons genuinely want to trample each other into the mud, plus there are also usually national team places at stake. Getting back to Aussie rules, with the game being a little more widespread, in the 1990s the concept boiled down to four teams, Vic, SA, WA and the Allies to represent the rest of the country. However, increased professionalism also dealt the death knell to these matches as clubs were averse to the risk of their players being injured in what were fairly meaningless games. The last time any such game was played in 2008 between Victoria and the All-Stars as a one-off "Hall of Fame". As part of the bushfire relief funding, another such game is being staged on 28th February, during the preseason fixtures. It will be held in Docklands, which might be handy to keep the smoke out if the country is still on fire. The Deadly Hume fucked around with this message at 07:26 on Jan 26, 2020 |

The Teams: ADELAIDE CROWS First AFL season: 1991 Premierships: 2 - 1997, 1998 Their most recent peak was 2017 when they made the grand final, although it's arguable if they turned up. Since then they've been fair to middling, and have gone through a review of their operations. Whether this means an end to power stances, walking on coals, and nude hacky-sack sessions remains to be seen. BRISBANE LIONS First AFL season: 1997 (merger of Fitzroy Lions and Brisbane Bears) Premierships: 3 - 2001, 2002, 2003 (8 as Fitzroy - 1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916, 1922, 1944) The Brions have struggled a bit since their three-peat era, but looked more promising of late, with their rebuilding efforts bearing fruit with their best season in age last year, although when they got into the finals maybe their inexperience let them down. Still legit one of the more exciting teams to watch at the moment. CARLTON BLUES First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 16 - 1906, 1907, 1908, 1914, 1915, 1938, 1945, 1947, 1968, 1970, 1972, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1987, 1995 Those of us whose hair is greying and falling out can remember when Carlton were the cashed-up bogeyman side of the VFL, but for the last couple of decades they've been putrid. Some green shoots did emerge in the latter half of last season with Patrick Cripps leading the way (changing the coach probably helped as well) which may suggest they may do better this year, but I'll believe it when I see it. COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 15 - 1902, 1903, 1910, 1917, 1919, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1935, 1936, 1953, 1958, 1990, 2010 The "biggest" club in Australia, a country that regularly elects governments completely divorced from reality, so take that as you will. After bottling the 2018 GF, they were at the losing end of one of the worst great preliminary finals in recent history as they fell just short of overhauling the lead they gave the Giants in the third quarter. ESSENDON BOMBERS First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 16 - 1897, 1901, 1911, 1912, 1923, 1924, 1942, 1946, 1949, 1950, 1962, 1965, 1984, 1985, 1993, 2000 Took up a space in the finals with a percentage of 95% (they did get 12 wins, but still) and as has been the case in every final since 2004, lost it. I guess that makes up for the time they DQed from the finals for, well, that thing. Fun thing to watch will be how sulky Joe Daniher gets now he has to hang around the Hangar for a nother year. FREMANTLE DOCKERS First AFL season: 1995 Premierships: none The team is basically Cow Dude and a random bunch of gronks at the moment, but maybe now they've finally ditched Ross Lyon, and taken on Justin Longmuir, they might also dispense with the idea of kicking a few token goals and then turtling hoping the opposition doesn't score more than them. GEELONG CATS First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 9 - 1925, 1931, 1937, 1951, 1952, 1963, 2007, 2009, 2011 Won the minor premiership last year and looked the most impressive going into the finals, but then tripped up. They lost Tim Kelly to West Coast in the off-season so while one person doesn't make a team, that's probably going to peg them back a bit. GOLD COAST SUNS First AFL season: 2011 Premierships: none Another point of evidence supporting the hypothesis that the entire Gold Coast region is cursed and the sooner it finally washes into the sea the better. Another poo poo season will only lead to more questions as to why this team exists when even a Tasmanian club split between Hobart and Launie sounds like a more viable option. GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY (GWS) GIANTS First AFL season: 2012 Premierships: none Like Aldi, slowly gaining respect in this country as a legitimate option but still mainly known for the aisle of weird specials like Toby Greene. Won the right to play in the Grand Final but forfeited for some reason - maybe they were all tired out. Anyway they did prevent a Richmond v Collingwood grand final so let's give them props for that. HAWTHORN HAWKS First AFL season: 1925 Premierships: 13 - 1961, 1971, 1976, 1978, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015 Another Victorian jerk club (see Carlton/Essendon), however having had a brush with a fate worse than death (merging with Melbourne) in the 90s, actually reworked their Machiavellian ethos for the modern era where if you're going to cheat, do it legally. They had a 11-11 season in 2019, have Tom Mitchell coming back and bring Jono Patton in another one of those trades only Hawthorn can get away with, so more upside than down in 2020. MELBOURNE DEMONS First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 10 - 1900, 1926, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1948, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1959, 1960, 1964 The Dees came out of the wilderness in 2018 only to discover they didn't like civilisation so returned to the wilderness in 2019. The Victorian Alps haven't completely burned out yet so there's always Buller for a few more years at least. NORTH MELBOURNE KANGAROOS First VFL season: 1925 Premierships: 4 - 1975, 1977, 1996, 1999 Tyrannosaurus, christ it's so goddamn tall. Tyrannosaurus, tiny hands to hold the ball When Rex is on the warpath, all the other reptiles flee Tyrannosaurus is the monster that will eat both you and me PORT ADELAIDE POWER First AFL season: 1997 Premierships: 1 – 2004 They're celebrating 150 years this year, so as I've made a few snide comments about old VFL clubs, Port definitely qualify as the SA equivalent as the only non-Victorian club with a legacy identity dating back before Warwick Capper. Went 11-11 last year, my profound analysis is that they could go up, they could go down, or they could remain about the same. Ken Hinkley's probably gone if they don't make the finals, though. RICHMOND TIGERS First VFL season: 1908 Premierships: 12 - 1920, 1921, 1932, 1934, 1943, 1967, 1969, 1973, 1974, 1980, 2017, 2019 Another old-skool team that were functionally useless for decades, but suddenly they've won 2 flags in the last 3 seasons, their numerous deranged fans have something positive to be obnoxious about, and it's scary. They can reasonably be expected to maintain their level for 2020, which means more misery for opposition fans. ST KILDA SAINTS First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 1 – 1966 I can't really read the Saints at the moment, they've looked 3-4 decent players short of a finals team for years now, but at the same time have also not been bog awful - most of the time. They have moved back into Moorabbin as their training base, which should be fine as long as they don't set up the old nightclub as well. SYDNEY SWANS First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club (as South Melbourne) Premierships: 5 - 1909, 1918, 1933, 2005, 2012 For a club that has been a formidable opponent for the best past of two decades, they fell way off the pace in 2019. Buddy can still do his "thing" at times but spent a lot of the year injured, and the tail end of that contract is looking more of a liability. WEST COAST EAGLES First VFL season: 1987 Premierships: 4 - 1992, 1994, 2006, 2018 Put up what I would call a respectable flag defence last year, only missing out on the double chance on percentage and earned what was basically a walkover against Essendon, although were eventually knocked out in the semi. With the addition of Tim Kelly in the trade from Geelong, they should have another good year. WESTERN BULLDOGS First VFL season: 1925 Premierships: 2 – 1954, 2016 If their 2016 flag was a fluke - a wonderful, heartwarming fluke that it was - then their 2019 performance in returning to the finals with a great second-half run with most of that team (in particular THE BONT) was probably only second to the Lions' revival as the most improved team stakes. If they can keep it up, that is in the lap of the dogs. Tipping Join the goon tipping squad! Whether she will be back in time for round 1 remains to be seen (reasonable chance) but she is expected to play AFLW this season. Chloe Scheer is a reasonable chance to play as well but round 1 is less likely. Not sure on Rhiannon Metcalfe. Unfortunately, Chelsea Randall and Hannah Button (formerly Hannah Martin, she got married in the offseason) will be unavailable to play with their own ACL injuries. Deni Varnhagen seemed to do a knee on the weekend, not sure how serious it is yet.

News: apparently the Giants are looking at hosting a game overseas, specifically making a curtain-raising tradition of playing in Los Angeles. Views: Sure, feel free to try, but I’m not exactly sure where they could play that wouldn’t be too short and narrow. Two of the iconic gridiron stadiums, the Rose Bowl and the LA Coliseum, don’t have any extra space on the sidelines for a wider field. I’m not sure if you could make a footy oval out of Dodger Field either...

Lets see, in the dim dark recesses of the past exhibition games were played on baseball pitches, specifically Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami and Yokohama Stadium. Even in LA I think a crowd of 10-20 thousand is optimistic so they wouldn't need anything that big, so just find some baseball pitch with a few stands without an outfield wall, throw some turf over the outfield - it'll suck for the players but not be much worse than Docklands or Stadium Australia has been at time - and play ball! Either that or there are a bunch of cricket ovals at Woodley but they are literally park ovals so while you could definitely play footy on them, staging a professional fixture is another matter entirely. https://www.google.com.au/maps/@34.1798757,-118.4772537,1059m/data=!3m1!1e3 Fun fact: Sydney Showground was the baseball venue in the 2000 Olympics - they reconfigured it when the Giants were set up.

The Deadly Hume posted:Lets see, in the dim dark recesses of the past exhibition games were played on baseball pitches, specifically Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami and Yokohama Stadium. The difficult part is the Catch 22 of the location — the prime locations are the wrong shapes, or have a lot of seating so might dwarf the crowd. And that might look a bit minor league. Or, you go to some much smaller stadium, but it will not be a recognizable place so that will make things look small time. The best bet might be Dodger Stadium or Anaheim Stadium, assuming either of the baseball teams who reside there are interested in assisting.

I have an appetite for sports violence involving an oblong leather object so I might finally spring for an international package this year. I love a club that lives in the past and now pisses down the front of its pants so go Bombers
