That quest about the cheater guy reminds me: I'm surprised no Persona games after 3 have ever had "The characters get mad at the player if you use cheats" dialogue.

Their final reward in vanilla was Special Treatment, the ability to fuse Personas of levels higher than Joker's, in exchange for big bucks. It also exists in Royal, but we already got it at rank 5.

I can't think of any other Confidant boon that is more "immensely powerful;" you could get Joker a level 90 statline as soon as you unlocked it if you were willing to blow the dosh (and game balance).

Thankee kindly.
I'd say the most impactful Confidant bonuses:

Igor: increases Persona stock. Obviously really good for versatility, so it's good that it's an auto-level up.

Futaba: Final Guard. You ideally never have to use it, but it'll likely save you more often than you'd think.

Chihaya: Money/Affinity Reading: you have to remember to use them, but it's literally more money, and progressing Confidants faster. You don't necessarily need the latter, but it's still good.

Takemi: unlocking more items in the shop, but namely getting Invigorate 3 on everyone to increase longevity for dungeon crawling. There's a big difference between struggling to clear dungeons in a single day for the first two Palaces and then breezing everything in one day afterwards.

Mishima: allow backline party members to gain exp. Technically you might not ever need it, but great QoL.

Yoshida: increased rewards from negotiations. Can let you money farm much more easily if you dedicate yourself to it.

It's really good but loses a lot of its impact on a NG+ (where you have a ton of extra time to play with), while all the others outside of Takemi's are still useful. That and the fact that it's gated behind rank 10 and a Mementos request stops me from putting it up there (Futaba's is too but she'll still have use while Kawakami eventually stops being useful).

I have even heard them say we are assassins hired to deal with psychotic breakdown victims.
This must be part of the plan to shift the blame onto the Phantom Thieves. After all, the true culprit is the one killing the people on that ranking list.

Wait, the culprit is going after the other targets in the rankings? First I’ve heard of this!

I bet that killer thinks he’s *so* smart!
Yes, it’s possible he’s laughing at the sight of us impotently flailing in our attempt at a counterattack.
Er, I mean, the “thought” of us doing that. Not sight.
This culprit really won’t let up, though. Can’t imagine why he hates us so much…
Akechi, you probably know about profiling or whatever, right? Got any leads?
Yes, Akechi-san. If you were the culprit, why would you be going after us so doggedly?
I’m afraid I don’t have an idea yet of the killer’s motives… But maybe he just thinks you’re all nuisances obstructing whatever his real goal is. But again, I have no specific reason to think that. We’ll know once we capture him, I suppose.
Let’s just change my sister’s heart first. That’s the first step.
I agree. We will catch the culprit, but Sae-san must come first. It’s even possible I might be targeted if the rankings are a consideration…
That seems unlikely.
Probably not.
Doubtful.
Oh, shut up.
Nah.
It was merely a joke… I don’t quite understand this response…
I’m going to have to have a talk with everyone later about the fine art of subtlety…

(Diligent Office Worker) Probably relax at some luxury resort, then start my own business with the rest of the money… …Wait, we don’t have time for this. What’s our strategy for the clients we’re meeting tomorrow?

Devil Rank 8: Part 138

So, the chief reduced my quota! And he even apologized to me!

He said it was out of concern for my health, which is… kinda creepy, not gonna lie. But that’s not the important part! He’s letting me re-open my Kayo investigation! He seems serious about supporting me here. What the hell could have happened to him?
Who can say?
It’s too convenient though, don’t you think? Didn’t you ask me for his name the other day?
I have no recollection of this.

Hmmm…
Why are you giving him such a hard time? Aren’t you gonna tell him the other good news?

Right… I… I found her.
Huh!?
As part of his apology, the chief did some digging of his own. He followed up on my source’s lead and… she’s alive.

This is incredible news… So? Where is she?
…A mental hospital.

Music: Suspicion

What…!?
…Oh.

That explains why she hasn’t been able to contact me this whole time.

I’m scared to go see her, honestly… I’m close to the truth and it’s frightening. I want to know why Kayo is like this, and what happened that night, but… part of me is just too afraid.
If you’re that hesitant, I’ll go with you.
Don’t you have school, kid? I appreciate the gesture, but I’m pretty sure you can’t come out to the countryside with me and look into this for days on end.
You’re right, it was an empty offer. To motivate you!
…Well, thanks anyway. I can feel the courage to push forward coming back, thanks to you. Mainly because I wanna punch you now.
See, it worked!

I’m… going to go see her. No matter what happens, I need to see this through to the end. Otherwise I wouldn’t be Ichiko Ohya, journalist extraordinaire!

Thanks for listening to me. You helped me make my mind up.

You know, you’re way more than just some high school kid. You’re almost like my guidance counselor.

First sentence was treading in some dangerous waters, but the second sentence pulled you out of the tailspin.
You’re really mixing your metaphors here, kid…

I can sense Ohya’s deep appreciation for me…

Oh, by the way… Everything with the chief worked out okay, but the higher-ups are still keeping an eye on me.

…So you need more Phantom Thieves stories?
Got it in one! You’re so smart!

I enthralled Ohya with my stories about the Phantom Thieves… I feel like my Charm has increased…

Maaku gains Charm +3.

Thanks for pushing me… to go see Kayo. I’m a journalist. From now on, I’m always gonna chase the truth.

So, I’d like to make some progress. Why don’t we go to the Palace today?

Music: So Boring

The Phantom Thieves should target somewhere bigger, more global—not this tiny island country. Like… Oh, I don’t know, the casino city of Las Vegas or something. It was like a dream when I went there… Hehe, I might not look it, but I’m good at card games. The four suits of cards all symbolize something. By the way, Mr. Hamiru. Look at this.

Excellent! The spade is a sword. Almost looks like one if you squint, right?

What? No.

And the heart is the Holy Grail. The heart was originally drawn as a cup.

However, there are cards that belong to no class. In other words, they have no suit.

Maaku gains Knowledge +1.

The only card without a suit is the joker. Some theories say it originates from the Fool in tarot decks, but no one knows where it really came from. However, both are trump cards that can bring about unexpected effects. How you use them is critical.
You heard her, Joker. Pretty good name, if I do say so myself. I kinda wish I’d given myself a cooler name…

We’re going to use the Network Fusion to make Barong from Thunderbird and a Magatsu Izanagi Picaro.

Magatsu Izanagi is the Persona of the culprit of Persona 4, and the Picaro version has a wild design. Its Trait, Hollow Jester, increases its Attack by 40% for every ailment on the enemy. Its unique skill is Magatsu Mandala, which deals Heavy Curse damage and inflicts Confusion/Fear/Despair with medium odds to all enemies.

The Barong we’re going to make is, unfortunately, getting Mike Wazowski’d.

There’s its face. And hey, now I don’t have to give a blurb when we fuse it!

As your new mask, I will protect you from any impending calamities.

I also want to get this Barong Maziodyne, so let’s Gallows Mothman for some extra experience.

That’ll do it.

Next up, Horus from Lachesis and that Barong we just spent all that time on.

I’ll be your mask from now on! Let’s fly together into the light!

Uh, dude? I can’t see your face! It’s too bright!

Horus is one of the most important deities of ancient Egypt, god of kingship, healing, protection, the sun and the sky. Horus is the son of Isis and Osiris and the rival of his murderous uncle Set(h). When the sun rises, Horus is winning their battle, but Seth is winning when the sun sets. It is also said that the sun is Horus’ right eye and the moon his left.

Now for Norn from Pazuzu and Jatayu.

To you with the mask… I wish good fortune upon thee.

In Norse mythology, Norns were deities responsible for shaping human destinies. The three primary Norns (Urd, Verdandi, and Skuld) were tenders to the world tree, Yggdrasill, and prevented it from rotting. Other Norns would appear at a person’s birth to determine their future.

Last up, we’re making Dakini from Yurlungur and Narcissus. Dakini is above our level, however, so we’ll need 52800 yen.

You there, with the new mask! Lemme make that power of your heart burn!

Dakini is a Hindu deity of passion and relations, according to the “Background” tab in this game, but the concept can vary a bit depending on the context. Anyway, in this interpretation, they are Kali’s attendants who eat human flesh and gather at graveyards every night. Their name means “sky dancer.”

And that’s enough fusion for now, I think.

Music: Tokyo Daylight

What do you plan on doing today?

We’ll have Yusuke duplicate High Counter so we’ll still have a copy after we spend one on the Seth we’ll make for the final Strength request.

Now, let’s approach Yusuke again and ask to hang out.

What is your goal here?

Hm… You are correct. A nice break is necessary at times.

I would like to enter Mementos again today. I believe that place holds the truth of the human heart. …Let us go.

Emperor Rank 9: Part 160

Music: Confession/Secret

Hmm… upon reflection, this scenery is gruesome… but there is a beauty in it. It shares that fascinating duality with humanity itself…
Man, I really just do not get art at all.
I do not understand it myself sometimes… Was my earlier work for pure recognition, or was I trying to capture true beauty? Was I painting because of my talent, or just my upbringing? None of those answers quite satisfies me… Maaku, tell me… What do you think my mother was thinking as she painted the “Sayuri”?
Codenames, Fox. But, huh… maybe her love for you?
Ah, a fitting answer… But perhaps an incomplete one.
I mean, she painted herself looking lovingly at a baby. It’s not some deep insight. That’s about all I can manage in terms of interpretation.
In those brushstrokes, I can sense love, regret, loneliness, anxiety, calm… and hope. All my mother’s emotions, conveyed to the viewer. That is why it has had such an impact.

My paintings pale in comparison to such depths of meaning. How could I have hoped to convey pure beauty with my limited palette…!?

Fox, you’re sixteen years old. Slow your roll.
However… That painting has kept me going this whole time. It has been a beacon of hope allaying my sadness and brightening my darkest moments… I wished to do that for others myself… but I lost sight of that goal. We find ourself in a dark, unrelenting world, Maaku, but that is all the more reason to wield my brush again and give hope to others.
Good on you, Fox. Also, codenames.
Thank you for helping me through this. Now, for me to use my art to paint over this bleak world and fill it with hope… It will be beautiful. I hope you will see it someday, Maaku…
Am I gonna die!? Codenames!

I feel like my bond with Yusuke is growing deeper…

Hm, this radiant light growing within me… It must be the light of hope. …I shall paint it.
I can sense Shadows in the area… We should leave Mementos…

Music: Suspicion

…Who are you again?

…Kawanabe-san.

Right, right. And who was that?
I see you must have time on your hands, Yusuke-kun. I was just preparing for the competition. Do you plan on entering, by chance?
I do, in fact.
If you do, then I’d advise you to watch your pride this time. The winner’s spot is not simply yours to take. It’s your decision, though. The more the merrier, right? Ha!

…You don’t actually care about winning anymore, right?
No, I don’t think I do. I will enter my painting simply to show it to people. I’ll talk to you later, Maaku. Farewell.
Codena—Oh, sorry, force of habit.

Oh, right, I forgot I could do that.

I think the secondhand clothes store in Kichijoji will take them too, but we’d better do something with them.

Music: Everyday Days

Music: Beneath the Mask

(Host) We discuss his private life and the type of woman he likes… at only eighty percent speculation!
(Panelist) A lot of women have been calling him their ideal man, right? He’s even more popular than some idols.

Let’s use the laundry for the first time… uh… ever?

It might be good to ask Kawakami to handle this for you. Then, you can spend time on something else. Or would you rather sell it at the store in Kichijoji? It’s your call.

So, we have five types of laundry here. Different types of laundry come from different dungeons. The first type here, Sooty Man’s Armor, is “covered in gold smudges,” meaning it’s from Kaneshiro’s Palace (or the associated Mementos block). Sooty Wolf’s Coat and Sooty Snakeskin are “full of sand,” which is naturally Futaba’s Palace, and the others are “covered in space dust,” so Okumura. Because these armor sets come from blocks of Mementos one tier behind our current Palace, they’re probably going to be inferior to armor we get in said Palace or from Iwai. That’s fine though, because we don’t have to spend much money on them.

You might also be wondering why there’s multiple kinds of armor for each Palace. That’s because a piece of armor can be equipped by men or women or catsor it can be unisex, which means anyone except Morgana can equip it. Morgana is an annoying outlier here because he can only equip armor for cats, armor for cats obviously can’t be equipped by other characters. But anyway, for example, Sooty Astro Armor is women’s armor, while Sooty Black Armor is men’s. There’s also not a lot of unisex armor in the game; when I checked, the only Palace that gave unisex equipment to launder was Kamoshida’s.

Anyway, we put in two Sooty Astro Armor and two Sooty Black Armor.

Go ahead and call her, then!

We’re then going to sell all the rest of our armor except the last Sooty Black Armor at the secondhand clothes store.

With the points we get, we’ll then pick up another Clothing Grab Bag.

Do they seriously believe marriage is the only way a woman can be happy!? I don’t need a boyfriend! I can be perfectly happy on my own!

Hard not to worry, looking at you right now.

I didn’t say a word about you guys to those dumb cops!

Let’s go somewhere close then!

Huh? Who’s calling *you?*

He said he wants me to stop by. Apparently he’s pretty close. It sounded serious… I don’t think we should ignore him. Can you come with me?

A-Akiyama-kun!?

(Akiyama) Mishima…?

Oh, are you the one Akiyama-kun called? That makes this easier. See, Akiyama-kun here says he can’t pay up this month. He said you’re his friend, right? Can you spot him? I really hate having to get physical, but you know how it is…

F-Friends?

Hm? Are you not friends? That’s not what Akiyama-kun here said… Weird. What do you make of this, Tohru?
(Tohru) I don’t think, I’m just here to punch people.
Ha, that you are, chum! Akiyama, come on now. Is this the “friend” who was supposed to get you the money? Please, don’t lie, it breaks my heart.

……

Well, this is certainly a conundrum. My apologies, gentlemen. It seems you were called out here for nothing. Please, pay us no mind and be on with your evening. Come, Tohru. It seems Akiyama has left us no choice but to go see that girlfriend of his.

P-Please, no! I’m begging you!

I really wish it could be another way, my friend, but you’re twisting my arm here. If you don’t have the money, I don’t see another way for us to reconcile this quandary.
Hahaha! I don’t really get all these three-dollar words, but you’re messed up, Yuuta-kun!

A-Akiyama-kun…

I’m not sure I understand this dynamic here… I don’t think loan sharks generally have a “good cop.”
That’s not important right now! Hamiru, listen. I need you to run.
Yeah, okay, lead the way.
No, I’m going to stay!
This is a bad plan.
You don’t even know what the plan is!
I don’t need to. The plan involves me running away and you not. It’s a bad plan.
Fine. Just make sure Akiyama-kun gets out okay.

H-H-H-Hey, you guysh! C-Crap, I bit my tongue…

Off to a great start…
(Yuuta) Gentlemen, I believe we have already resolved our business here. Please, pay us no mind and return to your evening.

Run away, you idiot…

H-Hey! I’ve been recording this whole conversation! So lay off Akiyama-kun, or I’ll take it to the police! It’s already backed up too, so don’t even think about breaking it!

H-Hey, what should we do?

Relax. Now, Mishima, was it? I doubt giving that video to the police will have the desired effect. We have no quarrel with you at the moment, so I suggest you not give Tohru here a reason to get rowdy.
But I’m always rowdy, Yuuta!
Not the time, Tohru. Please, just forget you ever saw us.

Urgh…

This guy’s pissing me off. Do what you’re gonna do, Mishima.
But what if he punches me…?
Then I’ll punch him. Just have courage and try not to lean into the impact.

Hamiru… You’re right.

Yep, I always am.
You two seem tough and all… But this can’t be worth getting arrested again, right? Given your previous records, the cops’ll definitely come down hard on you.
How’d you…!?

It doesn’t matter how. Just leave Akiyama-kun alone and we’ll be even! Then if you keep your word, I’ll delete the video. The backup too.

Ha! Well-played, my good man! I know when I’m beat. Let’s go, Tohru!
Really?
R-Really!?
If you ever see me again, cross the street!

Music: Break it Down (Elp Version)

I can’t believe that worked… I would have folded like a twig if they hadn’t backed down there… Hell, I almost peed my pants…
Mishima, next time you do something cool, don’t cap it off by telling me you almost pissed yourself.
Wait, I was cool!?

The truth is, I’ve dealt with enough bullying to know guys like that have probably been arrested at least once. Oh, and… thanks for sticking by me, Hamiru. We can’t let injustice like that go unchecked. That’s why I started the Phan-Site… To make sure that nobody has to go through stuff like this again!
Mishima seems extra motivated…

Are you okay, Akiyama-kun?
…Why did you help me?
Well… You seemed like you were in trouble… Sorry.
……

Anyway, can you walk? Do you need us to call an ambulance?
…I’m fine. Just go.
All right. Come on, Hamiru… See you later.

Th-The panic is finally kicking in… I’m shaking so bad—I need to talk to someone…

Oh! B-But I have the model gun I got for self-defense! And my security system’s top of the line! So I’m safe, right!?

Oh, huh… For some reason, I feel weirdly calmer after getting to yell a bit. Anyways… Ugh. I’m so exhausted… I wish I could just crash, but I’ve gotta do some research on these guys… Ugh, and I have to mod the Phan-Site too! It’s looking like another all-nighter…

– DELETED BY ADMIN –

Early Morning

Music: Beneath the Mask (Instrumental Version)

We’re pretty much out of regular books, so we’re going to have to spend our time on the books that unlock locations, most of which we’ve already been to.

Music: Everyday Days

Everything from high-class, traditional cuisine to street food, like xiao long bao. This seems to be a fun place to explore and try out all the different cuisine.

There are so many shops in Chinatown, aren’t there?

Early Morning → Morning

Music: My Homie

*intercom chime*
(Woman’s Voice) (it’s Kawakami) …Is this on? Ms. Chouno, please come to the faculty office at once.
What could this be? I’m off to the faculty office, so make sure you study on your own.

So, what’s the plan?

You already know about that area, don’t you? Seems kinda pointless to read that now.

You already know about that area, don’t you? Seems kinda pointless to read that now.

It’s a famous spiritual spot, well-known for its walking paths. Quiet places like that seem nice. I bet you’d really be able to relax if you took someone there with you.

Apparently, the Meiji Shrine has its own train station. That’s how popular that place is.

We can visit the shrine to get points for a Confidant… but it costs time, making it worse than Fortune Reading. We will therefore never do this.

Though I guess you could always go alone if you wanted to pray or make a wish for something.

Phew, that was close. Kawakami helped us get a good chunk of free time though!

At this point I’m just impressed by Kawakami’s ability to repeatedly call other teachers to the faculty office for an hour under false pretenses without showing her face and without any of them getting suspicious or leaving early.

Morning → Afternoon

Music: So Boring

That’s a great idea! Why didn’t I think of that?
Hm, I suppose Futaba’s ability to process information is truly world-class, after all.
drat you’re smart, Haru!
I already tried.

>Gonna guess it didn’t go great, then.

I know so much now, it’s hard to make heads or tails of it. Suspicious people appear, then they disappear. It’s been that, over and over again.
So they are manipulating information to keep anyone from reaching the truth…
Well, there’s one thing I know for sure. Whoever we’re going against now is more dangerous than we can possibly imagine.

These conversations become hilarious when you realize the entire group already knows who the killer is. Like, they’re literally just playing to Akechi’s ego here, ha.

Afternoon → After School

Music: Tokyo Daylight

Apparently this post was made by someone with ties to the banks and the finance sector. The target this time is a guy who never pays back his loans.

Ah, a man after my own heart…

Right? Apparently even the police are having trouble catching him. He keeps changing his name and appearance to elude them. I guess he’s basically the man of a hundred faces. Not bad, huh? According to one particular post, he’s currently going by the name Fumio Akitsu. I went ahead and made a warning post about it… Is that OK? Either way, I’m sure it’ll be easy for #Millennials!
Wow, this is some good info, even for Mishima! Let’s discuss whether or not we go after this guy over at the hideout!

When I got this request, I was concerned that I would need to do it to progress Mishima’s Confidant further, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Mishima’s Confidant requires a certain number of his requests to be completed, but not any requests in specific. The spreadsheet plan should still work.

What are your thoughts on this flowerbed? I brought it here in the hopes of doing some serious gardening.
Wow… She’s so diligent…

Oh right, I keep forgetting to talk to Haru about the veggies.

Let me know if you’d like to grow any vegetables. So, what should we do today?

*giggle* That makes me happy.

So, we’ve got our mainstays from vanilla, the Moonlight Carrot and the Sun Tomato, but…

We also have the Earth Beans and Star Onion, which let us give a party member Charge or Concentrate.

We’ll just make a Moonlight Carrot.

Hehe. I hope you’re looking forward to it.

Huh? At a time like this…? Is this perhaps part of your grand infiltration strategy?

*giggle* You make it sound like it’s really important. I suppose relaxation is pretty vital at times like these…

It takes some time for someone as clumsy as myself…

So you’ll help me? Well, if you insist.

Empress Rank 2: Part 135

Music: What’s Going On?

The soil here would be so healthy if you were here more often.

What can I say? I like keeping my hands busy.
I’m happy we’ve found a use for this hobby of mine for our Phantom Thieves work. When I started gardening, I never expected it to have a practical result!

Beyond this, I’ve actually begun raising plants of my own at home. …Coffee beans.

I didn’t take you for a coffee person.
Oh, I’m not. I generally choose tea. I have so many varieties at home… But I recently discovered how much depth coffee has… the aroma and taste can be so sublime… It’s not just bitter, you know! There’s so much more to the flavor!
Believe me Haru, I don’t need to be told about coffee at this point.
I see… I apologize, this is just so new to me. I couldn’t even drink it before, you know…
Hm? Is there a story here?
Not really, just… something from the past.
That’s what a story is.

Music: Alright (Elp Version)

I mentioned earlier that I don’t feel I can trust the employees at Okumura Foods. My father always ran the company before, so people always needed to stay on his good side… They would even try to ingratiate themselves to me to earn his favor.
Knowing what your father was like, I can’t imagine that worked very well… Er, sorry, that was out of line.
It’s fine… it’s just that, ever since he died, that problem has gotten much worse… I’m the majority stakeholder now, so people are trying to use me to oust other employees. I don’t want to be a tool for them to gain power and crush their enemies, and I’m having a hard time trusting anyone at all now. There are so many rumors about everyone…

The worst ones are about Takakura-san, the new president. They say he was thrilled to hear my father passed.

I don’t know this guy, so I can’t really judge. What do you think? Does that seem true?
I certainly can’t rule it out. He’s been with the company for a long time now, but he’s only been nice to me recently. He offered to help me with asset management, but I’m afraid he has an ulterior motive…
This sounds like a good time for my famous motto: never trust a C-suite executive.
He does seem suspicious… The other day, he even suggested I sell my shares and make a fortune… But I realized if he did that, he could take the company for himself and strike the Okumura name completely. …But maybe I’m overthinking this.
No, you’re right. It’s good to be cautious around the bourgeoisie. They’ll knife you in the back for an extra quarter in returns on their investment portfolio.
I haven’t received any helpful advice so far either. Everyone I talk to speaks only out of self-interest…

…Thank you for today though. I feel a little better after talking about this with you. Oh, and don’t worry. I’ll make sure I keep myself motivated, even through these difficult times.
I can sense Haru’s trust in me…

I’m going to stay here a little while longer to check the drainage. I need to make sure these vegetables turn out as good as possible for the Phantom Thieves. Well, see you later.

Music: Break it Down (Elp Version)

It’s not terribly important, but what vegetables do you tend to like most, Maaku-kun? I might as well grow things that everyone likes eating.

Two of these aren’t even vegetables!!!!!

But it might be worth growing! A melon just looks so gorgeous. Maybe I’ll try growing some in my garden. Thanks for sharing your preferences. I’ll try my best to grow them. I hope you’ll be able to keep helping me. Good night for now.

Psychotic breakdowns—thought to be caused by the Phantom Thieves—show no sign of slowing down. Although police claim to have made progress in their investigation, many still have doubts.
This isn’t just our problem… We have to stop those mental shutdowns from happening.

Let’s head into the Velvet Room real quick. I need to grab a Hanged Man Persona for Iwai.

Music: Aria of the Soul

The names of the Personas you have registered now fill more than half of the Inmate Registry. Our master is please with your rehabilitation and has yet again bestowed a special privilege.
We’re giving you a bigger discount on summoning from the registry! What so you think? Are you happy?
If you fill the registry with even more names, our master says he can arrange further privileges for you. Work hard toward your rehabilitation.

According to a Japanese-language wiki I found years ago, the discount here for 50% completion should be 15% off. It’s 10% off for 25% completion, 15% off for 50% completion, 25% off for 75% completion, and finally 50% off for 100% completion. The first two discounts are rather meager, especially the difference between the first and second, but by the third discount it starts to rack up. Shame, then, that once we get that far there’s very little need for money.

On the subject though, I’ve recently been trying to reappraise Persona 3 FES and, wow, the summoning fees are absolutely hosed in that game. At around level 50, Personas start costing over 100k to summon. I have an Odin that’s been hard carrying me through a lot of the stuff later in the game and it’s about nine levels above its base, and it costs 280k yen to summon now—and that game doesn’t have compendium discounts at all. It’s a nightmare. By contrast, the level 55 Jatayu I pull from the Inmate Registry here costs only about 33k yen.

I got a call from Tsuda. I wanna tell you the details. You got some time?

Come to the back.

Hanged Man Rank 8: Part 138

Music: What’s Going On?

Hey, you’re exactly the person I was hopin’ to talk to.

Tsuda rang me up the other day. He told me to forget about all those threats he made. I honestly thought it was a joke or somethin’ at first, but he hasn’t contacted me since. And also, when we spoke, he felt like the old Tsuda somehow. My sworn brother… But man, you ever heard of someone changing so much so quick?
Uh, nope. Weird!
There’s definitely something goin’ on behind the scenes I don’t know about… but it’s a real load off my shoulders either way. But I guess this means our deal’s done, huh? I was usin’ you to drive Tsuda away, and you definitely got that done.
But I didn’t do anything! As far as you know!
Anyway… I know I basically fired you, but would you wanna keep workin’ here, maybe? I understand if you got other commitments, of course, but you’re real convenient to have around.
Sure. If you pay me.

Heh, looks like you still got your courage.

I worry you think I was joking.

Just don’t go expectin’ me to make the job any easier for you, y’hear? I’ll be countin’ on you, kid. I mean, uh… Maaku.
It feels like my bond with Iwai is growing even deeper…

All right, first order of business is takin’ out the trash. C’mon, we gotta get rid of these prototypes. Disassemble ‘em and wipe the prints off before we toss ‘em though, okay? Oh, and I’m not lettin’ you leave ‘til they’re done.

I know you don’t mean it like that, but that’s the legal definition of kidnapping.
Just get to work…

I feel like helping Iwai with his work has honed my Proficiency

Maaku gains Proficiency +3.

Music: Alright (Elp Version)

About Tsuda… Let’s keep an eye on him for a while. Seemed like he was on the level, but… can’t be too careful.

I’m just gonna hang back and run the store for a while. Safer that way. And that means…

Okay. I’m countin’ on you, Maaku.

Music: Break it Down (Elp Version)

It seems they only hold it around this time of year. Would you care to join me?

Don’t forget to respond, okay?

I know this one’s pretty short, but looking at the material for the next one I’m not sure I could have combined it with this one. That’s for next time, though.

In other P5 news, a beta build of the original base game (dated 2/25/2016) just got dropped out of nowhere.

Highlights:

--"Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There" not only had different lyrics, but a completely different singer at this point in time (consensus is that the singer is most likely Yumi Kawamura, who worked on Persona 3/4's music).

--An early version of "Last Surprise" that was used for one of the trailers.

I know absolutely nothing about music production but my immediate assumption about that version of Rivers in the Desert is that the additional layer of synth garbage is there just to give guidance on the notes they wanted the singer to hit, because not only do the tones seem to match up but they only correspond to the missing vocal track, not any other part of the song.

I like the more toned-down versions of the song. They are not as energetic as the main songs, but they definitely have this relaxed rhythm that I vibe to. Nonetheless, "Rivers in the Desert" really does sound different.

The minor-key Last Surprise I think was used as a base for some side material like Q2.

Yeah, that almost certainly seems like a placeholder because no instrument would be playing the vocalist's melody in the final product, you harmonize but don't echo it note for note, beat for beat. If it's not a guide track for your singer, then the singer wasn't selected/available, the lyrics were unfinished, or they were playing with the melody to see how it works with the rest of the music.

Here’s what we’ve got for you today! First off, we have the Sturdy Ointment Set! Treat those wounds before they happen! 3 Physical Ointment and 3 Magic Ointment! These will be in one set! What a steal! But wait! There’s more! Next we have the Inner Muscle Set! As long as you have this, you’ll always have inner strength! 1 Salvation S and 5 Hustle S! Both items in one set! What a steal!

I’m gonna be honest with y’all, I was buttoning through this text pretty rapidly and didn’t really know or care what was in one or both of these, so I mainly just picked the more expensive one! It doesn’t actually matter, though.

From what I can find this event with Haru isn’t new, but we didn’t see it in the original game, so I’ll save my game here and check it out. We don’t have enough free time to commit to it though, so we’ll have to reload afterwards.

Let’s head out. You don’t want to keep Haru waiting.

Music: Break it Down (Elp Version)

I… do not know what that is. Hold on one moment!

…Apparently, it’s an ornamental bamboo rake meant to bring good luck to a business. They are often sold at Tori-no-ichi festivals, which are held in, oh hey, mid-November. The festivals are held to wish for economic success, and the kumade themselves are apparently typically adorned with symbols of prosperity like the sea bream, the Seven Lucky Gods, and the “hammer of fortune.” I don’t really know a lot about those symbols and don’t particularly care to dive into a rabbithole here researching them, so I’ll leave it at that. That’s the basic gist of it from a two-minute search.

If you care to look into this more, I found these sources to look into this. They’re not super in-depth but they helped me get a basic understanding. Anyway, back to the festival!

Thank you for helping me out. …And, sorry.

Oh, but… maybe I should try to keep my head down.

Father always bought huge, elaborate ones for good fortune… They even reported it on TV.

I’m thinking of buying one for the Phantom Thieves instead. If we set that up in the hideout, I feel like something good will happen.

I appreciate the thought, Haru, but I’m pretty sure I’ve got us more-or-less covered on the money front. Unless you wanna chip in on expenses?
Er…
Yeah, that’s what I thought.

And with that Prince Boring I’ve seen so many times before, no less! I think this means we need an interview!

Oh, how chivalrous! She your girlfriend?

I’ve interviewed him before.

Hmm, I see… Well, it seems like I’m intruding, so I’ll get out of your way, hmm?

Oh, um… Okay…

Yeah, she’s… yeah.

Maybe I should have asked her to take a photo of us as a memento. Well, let’s regroup and buy that kumade.

Well, then… please put this up in the hideout.

Thanks for today.

I mentioned earlier that we didn’t see that event in the original LP. I reviewed the tapes and found that we did actually get Haru’s text about it, but we turned it down on the spot for, of all things, a Mementos visit. I also never covered it in the second go-around, so that’s the first we’ve seen of it. That all said, the requirements to get that event are actually slightly stringent, requiring you to not have locked in a platonic relationship with Ohya yet. That means that Ohya has to either be at Rank 8 or below, or you have to have romanced her. Kind of weird, honestly.

Before we reload, let’s check out the kumade.

I hear a kumade can rake in good luck for businesses. Maybe Leblanc will serve fancier food if they make more money…

…Oh. It’s… a literal kuma-de, huh?

Okay, let’s reload and do something else now. Sorry, Teddie.

Music: Tokyo Daylight

Hurry back to your prison!

Let’s do some fusion.

Music: Aria of the Soul

We’ll start by fusing Rangda from Kikuri-Hime and a network Chernobog.

I’m gonna become your mask, OK? Just don’t go dying on me!

Rangda is the eternal rival of Barong and is a wicked witch in Balinese folklore. Their battle is unending, as she will revive when defeated. Also, she eats children!

One thing I feel the need to mention but will not be following through on is that we currently have both Barong and Rangda in our active Personas. I no doubt mentioned this in the old LP, but Barong and Rangda have something of a tradition in Megaten: when you fuse them, they always become Shiva, and this is the only way to make Shiva. This is a hidden fusion recipe. Unlike the more complicated, standardized unique recipes involving more than two Personas, these hidden recipes are obviously invisible. You just kind of have to know about them. Persona 3, 4 5 each have three hidden recipes, but other Megaten games can have a lot more.

On that note, because I find explaining this interesting, Persona 5 doesn’t let you fuse any random three Personas like Persona 3 and 4 did, so Norn, which in P3 and P4 was a hidden fusion from the Moirai sisters (Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos) is now just a regular fusion. Not sure why they didn’t give it a unique recipe, but whatever. There’s also Alice, which in P3 was a four-way fusion from Lilim, Pixie, Nata Taishi, and Narcissus, but ever since P4 has been a hidden fusion from Belial and Nebiros as a reference to the original Shin Megami Tensei (weirdly, Persona 5 Strikers goes back to making her a four-way fusion, I assume because Belial isn’t in that game). The only other hidden recipes in 3, 4, and 5 are Shiva, which is shared between all three games, Messiah from P3, which is Orpheus fused with Thanatos, and Ardha in Persona 5, which is Parvati fused with Shiva again (I briefly wondered if I should consider that a gameplay spoiler, but I already fused Ardha in the original LP’s bonus updates so eh).

Anyway, here’s Shiva. We will not be fusing it. That is, in part, due to it being thirty levels above us at the moment and thus grossly overpowered…

…But also, it’s in part because it’s thirty levels above us at the moment and thus exorbitantly expensive. Don’t get me wrong, we can afford it, I just don’t want to. 352,600 yen is more than half our current money, for the record.

Instead, we’ll be fusing Koumokuten from Lachesis and Dakini.

Leave keeping watch over monsters to me… In exchange, I grant you a mask that monitors the world…

Koumokuten is one of the Four Great Heavenly Kings and the guardian deity that protects the west of Buddha’s realm. He is also known as Virupaksha, which means “he who sees all.”

The next thing we’ll do is use the Gallows to strengthen our Byakko by sacrificing Jatayu. I know it says Rangda in the screenshot, but I button through menus very quickly, okay?

We want our Byakko to learn Bufudyne, which it will. Sounds good, let’s do it.

And we also learn Diarahan from the sacrifice, score.

Next thing I’m gonna do is actually mildly controversial to myself. I’m going to fuse Athena, one of the DLC Personas. As a reminder, the DLC Personas are all free to summon once. As a second reminder, they’re also literally free in that the DLC Personas from the original game are all in Royal, no charge. And it’s a little late, but while I’m on the subject I should mention that I have all the DLC Personas added in Royal specifically, because I’m stupid. I still haven’t gone to the cardboard box in Leblanc’s attic to claim the other DLC or the save bonuses, but the Personas don’t have to be claimed. I only mention I have them because if you don’t have them it’ll mess with what Personas you get when you’re fusing. Most of the DLC Personas are from protagonists (or antagonists) of other recent Persona games, and each of those has a Picaro version a few levels higher with an alternate appearance, some changes to the generic skills in their learnsets, and slightly altered stats.

Anyway, fusing a DLC Persona is controversial (at least to me) because these things are loving broken as poo poo, as I have mentioned many times. They each have a unique skill and Trait (neither of which can be passed on through fusion), and those are generally pretty nuts. Athena’s unique skill is Akashic Arts, which deals Severe Physical damage to all targets. And this is at Level 46, when Ryuji and Yusuke are just learning single-target Severe. Oh, and I forgot to mention: it hits 1-2 times and has a high crit rate. That is just completely bonkers and I feel disgusting just looking at it. Athena’s stats are also pretty good. They’re not like, exceptional for this level, but they are incredibly balanced, which means she’s pretty good at everything. Her Trait, meanwhile, is Grace of the Olive, which is also absurd: it reduces all skill costs to 0 during One More.

Legitimately: I don’t know what I was thinking when I fused this thing, and I don’t know that I’ll ever use this Persona. But I do think it’s interesting to just look at what we’re dealing with here when I say these things are truly stupid.

My mask shall be the shield that protects you.

Anyway, I fuse it. Athena is the Greek goddess of wisdom-slash-courage-slash-civilization-slash-justice-slash-philosophy-slash-yadda yadda you get it, and Aigis’ ultimate Persona in Persona 3. She aided many heroes in battle like Heracles and Perseus. Often in her appearances in Megami Tensei games, she goes by Pallas Athena, a reference to her taking the name of her friend Pallas after she killed him in battle. Her father Zeus also gave her the Aegis, a piece of armor that could protect her from all manner of evil or calamity. Her symbol is the olive tree.

Music: Layer Cake

Well, it’ll make my job easier if the cops have their attention elsewhere, y’know? So, you need somethin’ today?

Next, we’re going to go shopping.

First, we’re going to sell all our treasure items. That’ll make us a neat little chunk of change.

Then, we’re going to upgrade everyone’s guns just because I feel like it.

There are three new modifications we can add to weapons: the Giga Barrel, the High Power Receiver, and the Mega Power Receiver. The Giga Barrel decreases power for almost perfect accuracy, the High Power Receiver lowers accuracy for even higher damage than the Power Receiver, and the Mega Power Receiver does the same thing, but more.

For my purposes, I’ll just slap a High Power Receiver on Maaku’s new pistol.

Ryuji gets a new shotgun with a Power Receiver. The shotgun has so few shots that I’m less willing to play it dangerously.

We give Morgana another Fire Camo slingshot to take advantage of his Wind affinity.

Ann gets a Power Receiver on an SMG.

Yusuke gets a Mega Power Receiver, because he has a whole 10 shots in his rifle and can choose what he fires at, unlike Ann.

Haru’s new grenade launcher gets a Power Receiver. We also end up skipping Makoto and Akechi because we just upgraded Makoto with an Electric Chair weapon and Akechi’s starting equipment is not much worse than what we can buy at the moment.

We also upgrade everyone except Haru and Akechi’s melee weapons, because those two were, again, fine. The only thing here I regret is selling Ryuji’s Armageddon Rod, because that Strength boost is nuts and it’s a unique weapon from the last Palace that isn’t actually much worse than what we bought.

Before we leave though, I think twice and decide to check out Makoto and Akechi’s gun upgrades after all, slapping a High Power Receiver on Makoto’s revolver and a Power Receiver on Akechi’s… uh… laser gun.

I’ve been in contact with Kana-chan over email recently… We even talked on the phone about elementary school.
Talking on the phone? That’s a big step for you! I’m amazed!
Yeah, well, you don’t have to be *that* amazed… But Kana told me that she only yelled at me back then because she was embarrassed. She ran away because she thought I would hate her…
Sounds like you two were in the exact same position there.
I guess so… But we made up! And I apologized to her!
Well done. I know that must have been tough.
Thank you. I *am* amazing, aren’t I? Praise me more!
Maybe some other time.
Aww…

Anyway, it’s too far to actually visit each other, so we’ve been sending emails back and forth. We even made a promise recently… to both go to high school next year.

It’s thanks to you, y’know… I never would have been able to apologize before…
Now, it is Maaku’s turn to receive praise… Sweet bliss…

Oh, I almost forgot! Kana-chan was really surprised the Phantom Thieves listened to her request. She’ll never know the truth of the mater though… Mwehehe!

Probably for the best. Surprised she didn’t sound too conflicted about the Phantom Thieves helping her considering everything going on, though…

I’ve finally finished that promise. “Get along with Kana-chan”… Um… This is really important, so I’m gonna say it again… Thank you, Maaku.

Hey, don’t worry about it. That’s what family’s for, right?

I can feel a strong bond of trust from Futaba…

Um, is it okay if I ask you for a favor real quick? I mean, I just finished a super-old promise.

Music: Alright (Elp Version)

S-So, um… C-Can you pat me on the head? Mom used to do it when she was happy with me. Just… pat pat. …Can you do it?

Uh… Sure, I guess? I swear to god, this better not get weird like in Cold Steel though…

All right, bring it on!

Whoaaa!

Oh goddammit…

That was way different than how my mom would do it! Totally wrong!
Uh, sorry, I guess?
Never do that again.
I don’t want to!
Whatever, I’m good now… but I still have on more promise left… “Being okay without you around.” Sounds hard…
I think it is imperative we complete this promise as soon as possible.
Hm? Why do you say that?
IMPERATIVE.
Okay… Well, we’ll figure that one out some other day.

Peace out!
I walked Futaba home…

So I’ve been having a lot of fun talking with Kana-chan over the internet! We talk all the time now. We tell each other what we’re doing, what our days are like… Kana-chan said she cried when I reached out to her. When I heard that… I kinda cried a little too.

Anyways, I just have one more final boss to clear! It’s like I’m about to face the final boss! Once I beat that, it’s game over. Credits roll. I hope you’ll stick around until then, Maaku! Okay, later!

Should we even do a farewell party? He’s definitely earned it…

I wish someone like Ms. Chouno would notice. Then she could plan everything…

(Doting Father) You sure have some grown-up tastes for a kid… Do you like traditional Japanese sweets?
I ate them at Grandma’s house before. I used to play with Grandma more than with you.

Today, the offering at the jazz club is Matarunda Soda, which will give a party member, you guessed it, Matarunda. We don’t have a real need for this, but we’re also not going to spend it on Futaba because we can’t spare the night.

I’ve been waiting for you! Can we talk?

Oh, sit down! Sit down! I have so much to tell you!

Yes! Please sit down!

Wow, you’re pushy tonight.

Fortune Rank 8: Part 139

Music: What’s Going On?

Hamiru-san, I’ve been looking forward to seeing you! The chairman turned himself in! It’s even shown up on the news!

Yeah, I’m… aware…
One step ahead of me, as always!

It happened to suddenly too. He confessed all of his crimes… The police came to question me after that, but they ultimately concluded that I’m innocent.

They were wrong to conclude that, you scammed many people, but still, good for you.

Apparently the chairman took full responsibility for the ADP and admitted he was brainwashing all of its members. Oh, and speaking of members, some of them said they’ve stopped using the Holy Stones because of my advice.

It was the clients you sat in with specifically, Hamiru-san! This is so incredible, I never predicted an outcome like this in my readings… The ADP members have better fates now, and even my own is looking brighter…

It’s almost like this curse that’s followed me ever since the villagers called me a monster… has passed.

Sounds like you found the strength to change fate.
Yeah! …What did I even actually do, though…?
Don’t question it. It’s a sign of weakness.

That reminds me, my readings told me I would accomplish my objective with the aid of the Trickster… But I’m not sure what exactly that was supposed to mean… It’s such a mystery…

*nervous cough*
Well, it doesn’t matter. The ADP is finished, and no one else will be victimized by them. …Oh, and I guess the chairman probably wasn’t really psychic after all. I thought he was because he knew I was a runaway, but… I was wandering the city alone with luggage at my side. Anyone could have put that together, huh…?
I’m sorry to say it, but yes, teenage you was very dumb.
I guess some men are just good at knowing when a woman is vulnerable.

Are you one of those men, Hamiru-san…?

I don’t know what you’re getting at, but it sounds bad, so… no.

The truth is, there’s actually something else besides the chairman that I want to talk to you about. U-Um… This is so embarrassing…

Theoretically? Sure! I absolutely dig the *concept* of older women!
That’s a bit of an odd response…
Not if you know the women I know…
I see… Well, maybe there’s still a chance for me after all…

Oh, sorry! If we have time to waste talking about nonsense like that, we have time to read fortunes, right?
I can sense a strong resolve from Chihaya…

Oh hey, a new toy, Celestial Reading. Celestial Reading lets us, for a nominal fee (nominal here being 20,000 yen, four times the usual fee), trigger a Fusion Alarm even outside of a Palace. Plus, if we head to the Palace, there will be an increased rate of more alarms. And I gotta say, Celestial Reading is really useful when you want to add a full ninety loving minutes to your Palace infiltration because you have to keep screwing with the Velvet Room constantly!

Even though the chairman turned himself in, there are still some things left unresolved. Most importantly, the other members of the ADP are still confused as to what exactly is going on. So… I need to set things straight. This is partially my fault, after all. Right… The real battle starts now. …It’s getting late. I should close up for today. Good night, Hamiru-san.

I’m only a country bumpkin who ran from her hometown. What can I really accomplish…? And then I realized something. I could’ve easily ran away from the chairman, like I did back then…

I only got this far because I had you at my side.

I’ll do my best to give them hope. The same hope you gave me.

(Kichijoji-Native Boy) It’s going fine, I guess. It’s almost been a year since we started dating, so I gotta think of something.
How about one of the cute restaurants behind the department stores?
No way! They’re so expensive! I’ve never even been inside one.

We’ll duplicate our Invigorate 3 skill card. I don’t know why I’m bothering with most of this duplication I keep doing, I never actually use skill cards. It’s not even a matter of considering them cheating or OP, that would at least be something, I legit just keep forgetting about them.

Anyway, now we have two of these fuckin’ things. Hooray.

Let’s hang out with Haru today.

Oh, so you’ll take a look? Thank you. It really helps.

Empress Rank 3: Part 136

Music: Break it Down (Elp Version)

Soil is quite a mysterious thing. Within its gentle care, even a tiny seed can awaken, spread its roots, and grow up towards the sun. It’s almost like a mother. …Perhaps that aspect is why I find this place so comforting.

Uh… sure. Were you close with your mom, if you don’t mind my asking?
My relationship with her is vague and mysterious… It is as if she’s below even a mention in a footnote…
Eh, I can relate to that. My own parental situation ain’t much different.

You know, I only started taking care of these planters because one of my teachers asked me to. I was hesitant at first… but I liked it so much that I kept them long past the original request. I started mixing my own fertilizer, adjusting soil ratios… Now I raise these plants in complete secret. But um, Maaku-kun… I’m worried what the school might do if they found out about this.

Well, aren’t you the little troublemaker? There’s nothing to worry about, though. I’m sure it’ll be fine.
Well then, we’re partners in crime! I’m so glad to spend this time with you, Maaku-kun…

…It’s so different from how I feel when I’m around him.

Sorry, I meant my fiancé. I actually wanted to ask your advice about him… We met when my father introduced us at the beginning of the year. I was told we were just meeting his friend for dinner… but then I was informed this “friend” was my new fiancé. I was surprised… but I suppose I shouldn’t have been. I had always known this would happen someday.
Sounds rough.
W-We never did anything, to be clear! I’ve never even held his hand!
Uh, okay. Not really where my mind went…
I was never fond of him from the start, but he’s gotten worse lately, especially since Father’s death. Lately, he’s been suggesting we go on an “early honeymoon” together.
Okay, wow, I am legitimately almost impressed by the cajones on this creep. That is is some next-level sleaze.
……
In a bad way!
Anyway, I can barely stand to look at him, much less spend time alone with him… How can I decline…?
You gotta just be direct and unambiguous. Give a guy like this an inch and he’ll circumnavigate the Earth.
You’re right. I have to be clear with this.

As you know, my father passed away before he could fulfill his promise to rescind the marriage proposal. So… any conversation about putting a halt to the marriage will have to come from me.

I’ve actually already mentioned it to him, but he refuses to listen to me. He’s even been telling the employees at the company that if the contract is broken, Okumura Foods would have to pay extreme reparations…

I just… don’t know how to handle this. I can postpone while I’m still in high school, but after that…?

Now that I think about it, my father’s death has been rather favorable for my fiancé. He’s now engaged to the major shareholder of a massive corporation, after all…
I see what you’re saying. Clearly, he is the black mask.
We already know who it is, though!
Just joshin’ you, relax. But I see your dilemma. This guy seems like a real scumbag.
All he cares about is his own gain… but relationships have to be built on something more than that…

Something like… a love so intense that just seeing the other person makes your chest tighten up. Have, um… Have you ever experienced that?

Haru, I’m a teenage boy. I experience that all the time, primarily when I eat a really good hamburger. But I get what you mean, and the answer is no. Nothing more than simple puppy love.
I see… Well, neither have I. There’s certainly no spark like that with my fiancé. Spending time with him is almost like training… But if I think of it as hardship that’ll help me as a Phantom Thief, I’ll get through it!

I can sense an earnest resolve from Haru…

Well, I think I’ll be staying here a little while longer. See you later.

Um… you remember we talked about my fiancé. He won’t stop asking me to spend the weekend with him…

He’s been getting more and more persistent. At this rate, I don’t know how long I can play along…

Thanks for listening to me. I’ll let you go for now… See you later.

That seems somewhat sudden.
I mean, didn’t they find a calling card in Principal Kobayakawa’s office? I thought you had suggested that idea yourself, Yusuke.
That was just a generalization.
But if Mako-chan noticed what was going on with you guys, someone else might have too.

>Someone else *did* notice. He’s in this group chat.
Hello.

So you think that “somebody else” is trying to frame us? What’s gotten into you so suddenly?
Nothing has gotten into me. I just think there’s a chance the culprit is related to Shujin…

What do you think, Akechi-kun? I’d like a professional opinion on this.

The possibility is not zero, but it does seem a bit unlikely.

Why do you say that?
A normal person… wouldn’t kill your principal.
I see… Well, what if they weren’t normal?
Only someone really dark and depraved and hosed up would do such a grisly deed. Maybe they even kill for the pleasure of it. How despicable.
This loving guy…
What I meant was, the culprit is probably a Persona-user, right? He couldn’t navigate the Metaverse otherwise.
How perceptive of you. I had come to a similar conclusion myself. But just because Shujin seems to have the majority of the Persona-users in the city attending doesn’t mean the culprit is also connected to it. There’s simply no motive to eliminate the principal.
But if there’s no motive, then why was he targeted?
It’s likely our culprit has some sort of greater power backing them, including accomplices. It’s even possible someone is controlling them.
Who would be controlling them?
That’s the question, isn’t it? We have to figure that out.

I see… So even someone like you doesn’t know, Akechi-kun.

Yeah, you really suck at this.

Haha, harsh as always.

All I know is that the culprit must be extraordinarily devious. But I will catch him, no matter what.
>Oh, believe me, we’re looking forward to seeing you take them down.

More importantly, we need to focus on changing Sae-san’s heart for the time being. If we cannot do that, everything we have done will be for naught. We absolutely must succeed here.
He’s right. If we get caught now, all our hard work will amount to nothing. We really have to pull this off.

Please don’t give him credit, Morgana.

Representative Masayoshi Shido submitted his formal resignation from his current party. With many representatives on his side, the Liberal Co-Prosperity Party will be forced to split. The House of Representatives will also dissolve if the motion of non-confidence is passed…
So the House of Representatives is probably going to dissolve…

We promised to do that after this plan is over, too…

Mishima wants to hang out. Unfortunately, I’m looking at the spreadsheet and it says “no dice.”

Akechi also seems to have something important to tell us. Well, lucky for him, the spreadsheet says we actually can hang out with him tonight!

Just, uh, not the way he wants to.

Um, where are you going?
Darts.
I wanted to talk to you, you know…
I saw. We can do it inside.
Oh, just forget it… We’ll talk some other time.
Okay, cool, but I’m still making you play darts with me.

Wait, did you go home and change?
If you’re going to waste my time, I’m going to reciprocate.
Fair enough, I guess.

gently caress, I missed and got a single 20 instead of all three triple 20s.

Oh, what’s this? Maybe your hand slipped.
Shut up.

Akechi, naturally, nails the triple bullseye.

Aaaaand I fuckin choke again.

It’s alright, 140 is a perfectly good score.
Shut *up.*

Akechi gets three in the black, what a show-off.

And we finish with 0.

Music: So Boring

What? You’re asking if the Phantom Thieves would be given a trial if they get caught? Of course they would. All they would need to do is prove a link between the deaths and their activities. In short, they would be put on trial for murder. Hey, Hamiru. Tell me how old you have to be to listen in on a trial.

drat trick questions! :argh:

That’s right. No age restrictions for listening in on a trial—you can get in whether you’re 0 or 85. Youth crimes are an exception, but it’s basically open to the public. Meaning you can all go attend. Well, I imagine the visitors seats will be full if the Phantom Thieves were put to trial. Everyone is dying to know who exactly the culprits are and how they did it.

Maaku gains Knowledge +1.

However, their method and how it connects to the murder must be proven in order to sentence them. The methods that the Phantom Thieves use far exceed human knowledge. I’d imagine in order to prove it, they’d have to catch them in the act. Hmmm…

We go over to the Practice Building, where we find… a problem. More specifically, the problem is nothing. See, I apparently copied over something incorrectly, because I thought Maruki would be available today, and he’s not. Thankfully, he’s available tomorrow, so if the person I meant to spend tomorrow with is available today, I can switch.

Would you be interested in joining me there?

That person is Haru, and as it turns out, she’s free! I generally try to stagger Confidants so that I don’t see the same person twice in a single update, but there’s no helping it this time.

In the original game, this gate (Rank 5 Proficiency) was actually two ranks earlier at Haru’s Rank 2. They moved it a bit further back in Royal to make it less stringent, though Proficiency is trivial to max so it’s whatever.

Then it’s decided. This particular restaurant is an expensive hotel buffet. Hopefully the coffee lives up to that reputation.

Empress Rank 4: Part 140

Well, I’ve decided to start studying the topic more seriously by going out to places like this. I’ve been keeping it a secret from my fiancé though. You see, just a single cup of the Dark Ivory coffee here costs roughly six thousand yen.

Psh, I can afford that. Must be some drat good coffee, though.

I’ve heard it is. Apparently the beans they use are exceedingly rare. At the very least, we should try it before passing judgment…

Let’s order. I’ll be paying for both of us, of course.
You don’t have to do that, I just said I could easily pay for it myself. But also, thanks, I’m not one to turn down free poo poo.

Hm, I wonder how it will taste.

Well, here we go…

There is a faint bitterness beneath the strangely mellow flavor… This coffee is clearly distinct from what Sojiro serves at Leblanc…

What do you think?
It’s weirdly… pretentious? If that makes sense? Like it doesn’t even want to be called “coffee.”
I understand you completely. It’s delicious, but I can barely call it coffee.

Apparently it’s brewed using beans gathered from elephant dung.

I’ve been ambuscaded! Poop coffee!

*giggle* I apologize for not disclosing that to you earlier. I just thought you might find it hard to enjoy if you had known ahead of time.

Eh, I’m already over it.

Another rare type of coffee, kopi luwak, is gathered from the feces of a small cat called a civet. Interestingly enough, the flavor differs depending on what animal it was originally consumed by.

I have a cat, maybe we should get in on this.
I like the sound of that! Maybe it could be a new drink at Leblanc!

Oh, but we need Mona-chan for our operations, huh? We can’t afford to make him eat beans all day…

Eh, it’s probably better than what he’s usually doing, which is benchwarming.

Hm… Coffee is so profound…

T-Takakura-san!?

Music: Suspicion

(Man Called Takakura) I wasn’t expecting to see you here. People your age don’t often come to a luxurious buffet like this. Who is this with you?
He’s… a friend from school. Maaku-kun, this is Takakura-san, our company’s new president.

(Takakura) By the way, it looks like we will be able to avoid litigation. We somehow settled on decent terms. You don’t need to worry. Oh, and about your shares… you should consider letting the company hold on to them for the time being. I’m sure you have enough on your plate already, given everything that’s happened to you.
Well, I…

Oh, sorry to bring that up while you two are enjoying yourselves. On a lighter note, how are things going with Sugimura-kun? You two need to just tie the knot already! Haha! Just remember that you’re gonna have to reserve a wedding hall almost a year in advance if you want a good one.
Er… yes… we’re in the process…
Honestly, Haru-chan, you can’t afford to be this laid-back with these things. Haha! Well, I should get going. Let me pay for your drinks, though! It’ll be a celebration of your engagement!
The engagement was announced months ago, though…
Hm? You say something?
You don’t need to pay for us. And… I’ll hold onto the shares for now. I need to protect what my father left me.

…I understand. Please do try to reconsider though.

…That was a lie. There’s no way I can handle the responsibilities I have to deal with right now. I mean, I’m just an inexperienced high schooler… but I can’t leave the company in Takakura-san’s hands. Hey, um… what did you think of him?

I’m gonna be honest, I got no vibe from that guy. Either he’s a master manipulator whose true intentions cannot be divined, or he’s a complete dipshit. Or hell, maybe he’s some mysterious third thing, I’m not actually good at this.
I see… I’m also unsure whether I can trust him… There’s been rumors about him being pleased by my father’s passing, which makes sense. He’s the one with the most to gain from his death. But… he keeps saying he’s trying to rebuild our company’s image. Does he mean it? I can’t tell. All this has made me wonder what life would be like if I didn’t have all this money… If I was normal.
I can tell you the answer to that: it would still suck. Just, you know, in a different and more existential way!
I see what you’re saying, even if the company is often nothing more than a source of stress for me. It’s important that I hold onto it. That said, when I’m with everyone, I feel like I actually belong.

That’s why I’m going to work extra hard to make sure my harvests turn out great!
I can sense a strong resolve from Haru…

Oh, and as for that “Sugimura-san”… That’s my fiancé. He’s been really showering me with presents lately… One night he even left a bouquet of roses on my pillow. But… he would have needed one of my servants to help him accomplish that, right? What a scary thought… Even worse, Takakura-san has been hurrying us to get married after what happened to my father. He claims it’s because of the profit the marriage will bring to the company… …But there has to be more to the situation than just that.

I mean, that’s not a great reason even on its own…

Anyway, I’ll look a little deeper into Takakura-san. Perhaps he truly was please by my father’s death… Maybe I should start by asking the employees who are trying so desperately to win my favor…

Good idea.

…Hm? You haven’t drank any more of your coffee, Maaku-kun. Aren’t you going to finish it?

But it’s gone cold by now…
Don’t be wasteful.
Oh boy, love that cold elephant poo poo coffee…

Well, goodbye.

You took the time out of your schedule to hang out with me, but we ended up dealing with my own drama…

…Lately, I’ve felt so suffocated. I don’t know who to trust anymore.

I’m going to do whatever I can to look into Takakura-san. I might come to you for help again if I find something… Well, see you later.

Time for you to do some work around the shop, Mr. Gun Enthusiast.

Hanged Man Rank 9: Part 141

Sounds like Tsuda’s been excommunicated from the clan. His boss found out about his mistake. Guess it serves him right.
Oh, I’m picking up what you’re putting down here. So he’s dead, right?
What? No!
The yakuza confuse me.
Me too, kid… Tsuda used to be all about the code, but I guess times really have changed…

Music: Tension

What the gently caress, dude!? Stay right there so I can come kick your rear end! Hey!

That bastard Masa’s abducted Kaoru!

Oh no! Who’s Masa, again?
He’s that guy I had you eavesdrop on in the diner. He musta known about Tsuda’s fuckup this whole time! He’s been waiting for an opportunity to seize on it! Let’s go, kid! They’re over at Seaside Park!
Oh, I see that I’m coming as well. All right…

Music: Desire

…Let Kaoru go.

This is a really half-assed hostage situation, I gotta say. You’re just holding a knife in his general direction!
(Masa) Shut up, kid! Don’t think I haven’t noticed that you’re the one from the diner! Mune put you up to that, huh? Anyway, I want those guns you were gonna give Tsuda. I’m gonna make lieutenant with those!
You idiot, we already broke ‘em all down!
Then, just for kicks, I’m gonna tell your son here about what you really think of him!
You bastard!
(Kaoru) …I’m just a burden, right Dad? You can tell me, it’s fine!
Kaoru, let’s litigate this some other time, okay? Maybe just, like, run over here while you’re at it, I don’t *think* he’ll be able to stab you in time.
No, we’re doing it now! Unless you wanna give me a delivery date for those guns…
Well, I’m out of ideas.
I gotta get rid of Masa’s leverage…
No! You can’t kill Kaoru!
I’m gonna tell him the truth!
Sorry, just watched Speed. Anyway, uh, good idea.
Kaoru, listen. Your parents didn’t actually die in a car crash. Your mother abandoned you to the yakuza as a baby. I was one of them back then, so I took you in.
Yep! She tried to sell you for drug money! Nobody bit on that, though, so she just dumped you and ran! Hilarious!
I don’t really care about any of that… Munehisa Iwai is my dad! We’re connected by the gecko!
Heh… Attaboy.
Okay, that was very touching. Now give me the guns or I’m gonna stab this child!
(Intimidating Voice) Masa, you goddamn rear end in a top hat…

Music: Tension

Tsuda!?

Okay, now the knife is on the *opposite side of his body*! Kaoru, get the gently caress over here!
Too scared!
I know you’re the one who ratted me out to the boss, Masa. And stop waving that knife at civilians before it ends up in your own gut!

I’m sorry…!

What now, Tsuda?
I’ll make this idiot repay his debts. And then maybe, if he grovels enough, I won’t kill him on the spot. Either way… this is goodbye, Mune.

Music: Sunset Bridge

Are you okay, Kaoru?

I was scared, but I’m fine now.
Well, I’m glad you managed to stay brave through all that. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you the truth, Kaoru… I was so focused on makin’ sure you didn’t end up like me that I d idn’t see you were becomin’ stronger than I ever coulda guessed. And it’s thanks to you for helpin’ me realize that, Other Kid.
Hey, that’s me!

It feels like my bond with Iwai is growing even deeper…

I’m hungry from all that excitement. Let’s head back to that diner.
C’mon, let’s go.

The three of us enjoyed a peaceful dinner together…

Music: Alright (Elp Version)

I’m glad Kaoru’s safe and all, but… man, he ended up with a hell of an appetite after that. Sure was somethin’… “Connected by the gecko,” huh? …The kid must’ve grown into a man while I wasn’t looking. …But somehow it’s the best feeling in the whole drat world. Thanks, Maaku… You did some great work. Hah… You got me sayin’ all this sappy poo poo. Downright embarrassing. I gotta go get some air, cool down a little. All right. Later.

A symbol of protection, for the home and the family… And somehow, the gecko actually did end up protecting my family… Sounds too perfect to be real. Ugh… After goin’ out to eat with you guys, I can barely move. Too stuffed.

Line changes!!!

Okay, this one is a bit minor. For some reason, in the group text conversation in the evening of November 7th, after Akechi writes “The possibility is not zero, but it does seem a bit unlikely,” Haru replies “Why do you ask?” Obviously, this is pretty weird, because Akechi wasn’t asking a question. I reviewed the old LP and it turns out the original line from Haru was “How so?”, which makes a lot more sense. There was no reason to change the original line, so I’m guessing it must have been an error. Or maybe they just retranslated the line for some reason and didn’t realize it makes no sense in the surrounding context, I dunno. Odd.

In Haru’s Rank 4 event, the option “Kthx.” when Haru tells you she’ll pay for your cup is now “Cheers.” Boo! Boo I say!

These plot points in the confidant stories seem to always forget that the main crew has access to the Metaverse app. Haru and/or Maaku can at least check if he has gotten a twisted worldview. They used the app this way against Sojiro, and Makoto used it on her sister. It would not necessarily vindicate him, but at least it can confirm his sense of worldview.
