Sometimes it's not the bomb that's retarded.

The first edition looked great, but the new one is easier to make.

https://www.axiomgame.com/

Axiom is an abstract 2-player game from 1988 in which both players have only 8 pieces each, and 6 of those pieces also happen to form the board. There is no hidden information, but the ability to change the playing field is a wild card. Axiom makes your brain melt in special ways, so let's assemble a couple of teams and try to collectively think in 3D.

GAME RULES

Here's a brief summary of the rules, and some examples in a video I made:

:siren: There's a rules gently caress-up in the video, let's consider it my personal variant of the lateral move. Read the rules below for the actual picture.

There's also a player's aid card pdf on Axiom website, but it's different in wording to the player's aid card you see in the video :psyduck:

And then there's the rulebook with yet another version.

Bsically:

TECHNICAL

For notation, we're keeping the cardinal directions on the mat, and I'm labelling every piece.
So, for a move you'll specify the piece you move, the target cube, and the facing/rotation if necessary.

Here's the starting position:

(_) means the cube is free to move.

This way, GY to G4 North, OZ to G4 West is the complete game I show in the video.

Man this seems super cool, I love weird concepts like these. Wonder why there isn't some sort of video game version or clone, it would be nice to play it online or against AI opponents for people with no friends :smith:

I think I'm gonna try this out. I'll be Team Orange.

This seems like there are so many ways to lose this easily. I'll throw in for Team Orange.

Just to be clear on this rule, diagonal moves must stay in the same plane, while lateral moves may change planes, correct? Meaning all moves a chess queen could make are legal, plus any lateral moves over any number of sides?

Oh, yeah, I keep missing that part of the rule :cripes:

poo poo, do I re-record the video? The game works perfectly with my version, too.

I can tell from experience, that the first game will be short and both teams will be one move from winning without seeing it.

OK, let's get started. This will be the observer thread.

We'll try 24 hours or less per turn. It could take longer if there's too much confusion.

You can still join teams!

Now, I'll just repeat the starting position...

And from here on out this is the neutral zone. Unless someone joins a team really late :smith:

Orange defends, brutally.

Tenebrais
Sep 2, 2011

That's a pretty commanding move from Orange. They threaten G4 and G5, while Grey can't do something similar on the other side of the board.

They'll be pretty stuck if Grey moves G4 though - I recall there's a dome on top face of G1?

Say, how does your notation work if a sceptre could move to two different sides of the same cube?

Grey team thinks they've blocked OZ from moving with the bump, but can't it travel over the bump to the top of O6? Or can you only change planes once in a move?

Scepters can't pass over domes.

They can still move to G5, though, and since G4 is on top of it that isn't a death sentence now.

GZ can move to G5 all the way over G4.

They could move OY to O1 to directly threaten GY.
They could take O6 places.

Grey is arguing Orange can move to G4 if GY-G4(top). Can they? I don't think it would be legal?

SelenicMartian
Sep 14, 2013

Sometimes it's not the bomb that's retarded.

OZ can go to G4 by the proper game rules.

Grey can't see that G4 on G1 can block the check from OZ and exposes it to an attack, or that G1 to O3 can do a lot of damage too.

If there was a sceptre on the top, wouldn't it block OZ -> G4 (east), while G4 (west) is impossible (lateral move without moving over an edge) and G4 (north) and G4 (south) are both diagonal movements over an edge, so also illegal?

Carbon dioxide

As was made clear in an earlier post, Martian forgot to say in the instruction vid that lateral moves that don't go over an edge are legal.

Yeah, I'm also not 100% certain on the question in one of the threads whether you can capture a cube if there's another cube on top.

There seem to be a whole lot of implicit rules in this game that don't become clear until you run into them.
