That’s an awful lot of fullbacks and wingbacks who can’t play in other positions. Six (!) in total, plus a more flexible Saka. They could have used more options in midfield. Ward-Prowse or Dier would both be useful.

Jesus, had he picked Dier there'd be demands he be hung in the street.

I have no issue with the four RB thing - Trent A-A can play in midfield, Walker and James can play on the right of a back three. These are all flexible options that can be called upon if needed.

Because the coach thought there was better value in bringing a player who specialises in another position but can fill in. I wish we had a Modric quality player to call upon in the middle of the park, but we don’t.

Which right back would you drop, for which midfielder, and why?

One of Trent or James for one of Ward-Prowse or Lingard. Latter two have been on good form and have tools useful to England. Having both Trent and James is a luxury pick imo given we all know it's going to be Walker or Trippier in that position most of the time depending on formation. Or poo poo, forget the midfield, we're an injury to Kane away from having Calvert Lewin as the only identifiable striker.

The pick sorta makes sense if the plan is a 4-2-3-1, it'd explain why he's bringing so many deeper midfielders and only really Mount and Bellingham that can play in the 10 spot.

4 right backs but leaving vardy at home is a galaxy brain move that rivals pep in the CL final

Don’t get it.

Yeah, I’d have another midfielder (for Trent) and another proper striker (for Sterling).

He is still on the standby list, as are the other dropped players (Godfrey, White et al) who were offered the chance to go home but wanted to stay. They can still be picked up to and including the day before we play Croatia, so if someone gets injured before then, at least they'd be ready. Also, for the Austria game, Sancho is unwell.

It's really not as confusing as everyone is making it out to be.

The only point in playing the game at all is for the squad we’ve picked to learn to play better together, before competitive games start.

Including a single player who’s not in the squad is nonsense, it means another midfielder will be benched.

Are we somehow unable to field a team without 7 City/Chelsea players?

Correct. United players report for duty today, but won’t play against Austria. City and Chelsea players report Saturday but won’t play against Romania.

Legit can’t work out an eleven for tonight. Can’t wait for experts on Twitter to be annoyed.

And I said, Lingard is a standby player, and is playing due to an illness in the squad, missing United/Chelsea/City players, and the fact he could make the squad afterall up until Saturday 10th June. Let’s stick to arguing over four right backs, this makes more sense.

They're probably fine for third/fourth choice, assuming Bellingham is second (but I thought he played deeper.) Either way.

You can't "officially" retire from being an international if you haven't also retired from being a player.

It's one of those unofficial handshake agreements with your respective FA that they won't pick you, until they do.

That's either a back 4 with Trippier at left-back, a back 4 with Saka at left-back and TAA in midfield, or a back 3 including Trippier with TAA and Saka as wing-backs. Or some other mad poo poo. But probably the first one.
