I'm rather new to this footy business, so I'll ask a perhaps dumb question.

If you were a rich as gently caress Arab, it would seem more interesting, more challenging, and perhaps less expensive at first, to buy, say, Millwall, or any other English League team, and improve it to the point where got promoted. At least there would be some drama.

Why isn't this route ever taken by the billionaires? Senseless to try to think like a billionaire, I know.

They have functionally unlimited money and don't have the patience to wait one or two years for their spending to pay off, so there's no reason for them not to spend five times the money for instant gratification.

Also a different Saudi billionaire did exactly this with Sheffield United like ten years ago and their time in the PL since the takeover has amounted to finishing 9th and then finishing 20th.

gently caress Saudi Arabia, I hope Newcastle (the club and the city) can squeeze a few billion out of them and then find a way to chase them out, rather than turn into simpering cheerleaders for their new oil-rich hellworld state owners like City and PSG fans have.

Yep, I'm a Newcastle (armchair) fan and personally want it to fall through. Don't really care that other clubs are owned by horrible bastards, laundering Saudi Arabia's reputation feels like a new low (if only marginal) for the game in this country.

People who actually go to matches (ie my friends) will be psyched for it obviously because they won't have to watch poo poo players playing bad football anymore. I do understand that perspective.
