Nature Abhors A Vacuum

The 2021 College Baseball season was wild and crazy. The Arkansas Razorbacks, #1 team for most of the year, led by a Golden Spikes award winning "closer" in Kevin Kopps, didn't even make it to Omaha. The College World Series in Omaha became, as far as I know, one of the biggest college event effected by COVID. NC State, having won the Fayetteville Super Regional and up 1-0 over Vandy, was hit hard by COVID. They had to play one game heavily limited players and then had the winner-takes-all game called off entirely due to COVID, sending Vandy and their two rockstar pitchers to the CWS. But Will Bednar, who I think could have easily won a host of national awards in any season where Kevin Kopps was not doing his thing, and Tanner Allen stepped up and led Mississippi State to their first NCAA baseball title.

I have watched the NCAA Baseball tournament in the past, but with WFH due to COVID I got to watch more of the tournament than I usually get to, and even with my teams heartbreak I think last years tournament was one of the best I have ever seen. Lets hope this year goes strong! College baseball needs a big injection of fans and I think this is a season where the sport as a whole can build on last year and push on.

Here is the composite poll I found, with high/low rankings in parenthesis

code:
1	Texas (1/2)
2	Vanderbilt (1/3)
3	Mississippi State (3/9)
4	Stanford (3/7)
5	LSU (3/10)
6	Arkansas (2/20)
7	Notre Dame (4/13)
8	Ole Miss (5/19)
9	Florida (6/23)
10	Oklahoma State (7/19)
11	East Carolina (8/15)
t12	NC State (7/NR)
t12	Florida State (11/15)
t12	Texas Tech (4/23)
15	Arizona (10/22)
16	TCU (8/NR)
17	UC Irvine (14/20)
18	Georgia Tech (11/24)
19	Tennessee (16/NR)
t20	Oregon State (11/NR)
t20	Virginia (5/NR)
22	Georgia (14/NR)
23	UCLA (17/NR)
24	Miami (Fla.) (18/NR)
25	Oregon (19/NR)
We are two days into the season and, while you cant win every game, the top 25 has already seen some casualties. Arkansas lost its opening game for the first time since 1994 to Illinois State. Defending champion Mississippi State lost its opening series to composite #32 Long Beach State. East Carolina lost it's opening series to Bryant. Oklahoma State and Vanderbilt are 1-1 going into tomorrow (find game 3 on tv if you can). UC Irvine is 1-1 against Louisiana. TCU is 1-1 against Cal. Florida is 1-1 against Liberty. Stanford is 1-1 against Cal State Fullerton. This looks like its shaping up to be a super unpredictable season already.

Stolen from previous OP by elentar:
The only really important resource is the scoreboard at D1Baseball, which is the most reliable one around. Oh and there's a lot of random games that pop up on the various ESPN and Fox regional feeds, though fewer than there used to be.

Composite combines Baseball America, Perfect Game, USA Today coaches' poll, D1Baseball.com, Collegiate Baseball Magazine, and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association polls. Tenn was ranked as:

BA: 17
PG: 21
USA: 16
D1: 19
CB: NR (#34 here)
NCBW: 16

Yeah the whole CWS thing went from being amazing to sucking like few other things ever have in college sports in the space of about a week and a half there. State really seemed to have the momentum behind them after absolutely catching fire the second half of the season and I think with a full roster they could've at least finished off Vandy to get to the Final series.

Ah well, all that is in the past now and the future is all Tommy White: https://twitter.com/NCStateBaseball/status/1495176308212441090?s=20&t=n03k6V5J9YqM_fwRl-S3gA

Dude cranked every one of those 4 bombs well over the center field fence, all while looking like his sole athletic achievements would be beer pong-related. A folk hero in the making.

I really have no idea what to expect from this team, the ACC doesn't look like it'll be dominated by any one team this year but lots of good ones as usual. They could return to Omaha, they could host a regional, or they could scuffle and not make the same turnaround as last year. Time to get hurt again!

The CWS was amazing but a tragedy for NCSU.

UF is 1-1 against liberty as a top 10 team which isn’t great after being dumped from our regional attempting defense of our 2020 title.

Nice to see LBSU got a big bump but not quite enough to pass us after winning the series lol

Hitting ended up being kinda spotty all weekend - it's almost become a hallmark of our hitting coach Gautreau that the bats start the season off cold. Not too worried yet.

In other news, Landon Sims is still real good. After being probably the best closer in the nation not named Kopps last year, he's moved to a starting role and was fantastic - 7 IP, 1 ER, 13 SO, 5 H. Pretty optimistic about our whole pitching situation this year.

The competition has been weak. Better pitchers will find a hole in his swing but he’s got easy power.

oh, undoubtedly, Notre Dame's on the schedule soon and Campbell might throw their very legit ace in the midweek game. but in last night's nightcap he hit his 9th homer and picked up 4 more rbi's so i think everyone's just along for the ride at this point.
