The school bus gets to its next destination and half the students are reduced to ash. The frizz goes into great detail to explain how their souls were consumed by the psychic beacon that is the emperor to guide them to the destination.

The "magic" that powers the school bus turns out to just be hotboxing meth, and the field trips turns out to be all group hallucinations. After 3 years one of the children dies of an overdose and in the ongoing police investigation it turns out mrs frizzle isn't even a teacher, just a druggie who wandered onto site with everyone assuming someone else had hired them. Eventually the entire school is shut down in the fallout.

The real question here is if the school bus is alive and sentient, can it feel pain and does it know of its situation. Does it like being a slave to a schoolteacher and demeaning used to ferry kids around?

Though if you give it agency, you get the subtle horror of catbus: I am a parasite within a much larger entity, powerless to know its mind or where it will take me. The bus has a mouth, yet must not scream, because this would imply it has a choice on if it can choose to scream or not. Its ability to scream is dictated entirely by mrs frizzle hitting the "bus scream" button. Horrifying.
