Megathread for all things Vivziepop, aka Vivienne Medrano, an American animator, illustrator, comic creator and voice actress. She is best known as the creator of the adult animated series Hazbin Hotel (produced by A24) and Helluva Boss (can be found on Youtube). Warning, these shows are super not for kids, so tread lightly.:nws::nws:

From Wikipedia

quote:

Medrano launched her YouTube channel under the screen name "VivziePop" in 2012, building a dedicated online audience, who enjoyed her fanwork and original creations. In 2013, she started a webcomic titled ZooPhobia, which ultimately ran until 2016, ending so that she could find more time to develop Hazbin Hotel. Medrano directed her first short animated film, titled "Son of 666" in 2013. Medrano released her fourth year thesis film entitled "Timber" in 2014, for which she won a Dusty Award in "Outstanding Achievement in Character Animation". Medrano named the film after the song by Pitbull and Kesha, and its score had homages to the song as well.[15] In October 2014, she released an animated music video for the song "Die Young" by Kesha, which accumulated over 50 million views by October 2019. As a result, she became "relatively well-known" online for her animation and artwork, some of which she shared on her channel.

Medrano founded the animation studio SpindleHorse Toons, under which the pilot for Hazbin Hotel, the pilot and first season for Helluva Boss, and several animated shorts would be released.[19] Medrano serves as the director, writer and character designer for SpindleHorse Toons.[20] In an interview with Cartoon Brew, she said that much of the Hazbin Hotel pilot was funded by money from her Patreon, rather than income from YouTube's algorithm.[8] The company Horseless Cowboy assisted Medrano with voice casting during the first season of Helluva Boss, with Richard Steven Horvitz serving as the voice director.[21] Cartoon Brew described her as a "paragon of indie success in animation"

THE SHOWS

HAZBIN HOTEL (Available NOW on Amazon Prime)

from Wikipedia

quote:

The series follows Charlie Morningstar (voiced by Jill Harris), the princess of Hell, as she sets about fulfilling her seemingly impossible dream of opening a hotel called the "Happy Hotel," which aims to rehabilitate sinners. Due to overpopulation, Hell goes through an annual purge once a year, where angels descend from Heaven and kill demons. Charlie finds this upsetting, and wants to find a more peaceful solution to the overpopulation problem. Her goal is to have her clients "check out" from Hell as redeemed souls and be accepted into Heaven.[10]

With the help of her devoted manager and girlfriend, Vaggie (Monica Franco), and their reluctant first patron, pornographic film actor Angel Dust (Michael Kovach, pilot), she's determined to make her dream become a reality. But when her proposal on live television goes awry, her plan attracts the attention of the powerful "Radio Demon" Alastor (Edward Bosco) who, despite finding her belief in redemption laughable, wants to help Charlie run the hotel for his own amusement. To help out with the hotel, Alastor summons Niffty, the hotel's housekeeper, and Husk, the hotel's bartender.[11]

HELLUVA BOSS

from Wikipedia

quote:

The series follows the employees of I.M.P (Immediate Murder Professionals), an imp-run assassination company in Hell, on their many different jobs.[8][9] The members of I.M.P include Blitzo (pronounced "Blitz"), the boss of the venture, along with weapons specialist Moxxie, powerhouse Millie, and receptionist hellhound Loona. With the help of an ancient book obtained from Stolas, a Goetial demon of Hell, they access the human world to complete their tasks on order from demons in Hell.

The show features a different cast of characters and a different storyline than Hazbin Hotel, another show created by Medrano, despite taking place within the same universe.[10] As Medrano described it, while both shows share the same setting, Helluva Boss follows "characters and societies that already exist in Hell", with the main focus being on interpersonal relationships between characters, while Hazbin Hotel is about redemption and consequences.[11][12]

Spin-off from Hazbin Hotel which to date has 14 episodes, including a pilot. Episodes tend to run anywhere from 11-25 minutes. You can watch the whole series on Youtube
(note: there is a Pilot episode but thread consensus is to skip the pilot episode. It's not bad necessarily, but it's a Pilot episode, there are wrinkles that are smoothed out in episode 1. If you like the series you can definitely go back and watch the Pilot later, but we definitely recommend just starting with episode 1)

Episode 5: Nice to see Millie get to be something other than hyperprotective murderwife. I wouldn't be surprised if this episode was a meta-commentary on that, since that's a particular criticism I've seen lately.

Yeah, this was a fine episode. Couples/fight and argue, and I expected that Millie/Moxxie were eventually gonna butt heads. But Moxxie at least didn't double down once he realized how much he was hurting his wife. Also man nothing goes right for Blitz at all. Just oof.

This episode was kind of weird to me. There's some real good stuff here, but some of it didn't work that well for me. I really liked the stuff with Millie this episode, but conversely I wasn't huge on Moxxie's stuff. Moxxie's half of the Moxxie/Millie story felt kind of half baked to me but I can't really articulate why. Maybe I just couldn't deal with the voice Moxxie was putting on for the character, because I visually liked his disguise. Millie's stuff though was very fun, and she had probably my favorite song from the whole series so far. It's nice to get a little more insight into her character.

The Barbie thing was also kind of weird. It happened and then it was over in the span of like less than 5 minutes and that didn't really feel like enough time to devote to a character that's gotta be pretty important to Blitzo's past. Granted there's a certain level of building up in my head what the eventually Barbie introduction was going to be like but still. On the other hand, I really liked the character herself. Good voice acting, I like her design a lot, I hope when we revisit her it's sooner rather than later.

Very nice looking episode though, I can't believe a show with this much polish animation wise is just given to us for free on youtube

I loved whoever they got to do Barbie's voice. A+ all around. I really hope she'll be a more recurring character. i'd really like to see more back and forth with Blitz.

Also, did anyone else think Blitz was sneaking in to see Stolas? I thought that was a pretty good fake out

I feel pretty much the same way. Wasn't the best episode. Moxxie was at his most annoying and neurotic which was a big put off. And I have a visceral hatred of the valley girl archetype, so that only compounded the issue. Millie's stuff was good but still revolved around her relationship with Moxxie which...bleh.

Blitzo's deal was obviously more set up than anything, but they kind of half-assed making it plot relevant but obviously not fully fleshed out and it just kind of fails to be satisfying if not interesting at least. Guess we'll see.

I sorta agree, I kinda like that it shows the shittier side of moxxie by showing him as kinda of a self important dick who goes full theater kid and wants to be the center of attention and he can’t admit that his plan won’t work. It also shows why blitz is sorta an important dynamic and keeps his ego in check. Apperently a ton of people are deeply offended by the joke at the end. People are weird.

What, where Blitz calls him a loving disgrace? Because he's right, Moxxie took the job and spent a full week playing dress up instead.

Yeah, weird dynamics in this episode. But the imps all getting hit full in the face with a bag of powdered heroin was funny, and the incest joke at the end as well.

A South Park episode exists where the whole punchline is that environmentalism and working towards a better future is gayer than a huge pile of dudes all loving each other. Nothing Viv has ever made is as controversial as a mid South Park episode from 15 years ago.

yeah thats the thing, Helluva boss has dark and crude humor but its pretty light least for some weird gently caress like me, like aqua teen is way darker and obviously south park and stuff like moral orel and etc.

i think south parks messages suck alot(insert all the various arguments and etc), but i think the message of that episode was basically "the adults are afraid of not being white anymore and having equality, so they gently caress each other out of a better world".

who knows. I think alot of online folks who are like who are younger(like teens 20s) basically view fandoms and shows and etc as things that provide moral instruction and need to always say the right thing always. so when you have hosed up mean jokes, thats bad.

It's gotta be a combination of this and a bunch of other bad fandom habits that have only gotten worse over the years. Like, the stuff in here is less tasteless than an episode of Family Guy

I feel like most bad faith HB criticism falls in to one of several categories

1)Why did a funny thing happen in this comedy show?
2)Why does this character act in a way I don't like?
3)Why was this plot point not resolved immediately?
4)Why did conflict happen?

And my new personal favorites that I'm seeing pop up more and more recently

5)Why does this R rated comedy have R rated jokes?
6)Why is this show not a completely different show that I made up in my head and am now attached to?

I've seen more than one Helluva Boss Rewrite posts which, like, fanfiction is fine but this carries an air of, "here's how I'D write the show in which it would be BETTER," in which case, I dunno girl, just watch something else?

Yeah, exactly, nearly all of the characters and their interactions are meant to be enjoyable.
A big part of this is when the crew behind the the two shows create a character they are actually creating a character.

They have personalities, a purpose and a fun, if busy, design.
You just need to look at crowd shots to see just how much fun they have designing characters.

Compare that to something like say Family Guy and how it treats the overweight.

Crowds of them all look virtually identical, staring dull eyed while they gasp, fart and eat candy.
They exist purely as a fat joke.

That's not too say fat jokes can't be funny, early Simpsons had some great ones, like Homer eating all the donuts in hell or being constantly outwitted by pie.

But Family couldn't care less about creating characters or telling jokes, they just think fat people are gross and they'll use any excuse to let their audience know.

But Helluva Boss never does that, it's rude and crude, but it's shockingly....I dunno....wholesome?

That's a weird as hell way to describe Helluva Boss, but at the end of the day, I want nothing but the best for these stupid violent children.

yeah helluva boss is never Hateful. its edgy and kinda mean at times, but its more like smiling friends then rick and morty.

its more the world can be mean and antagonists can be hosed up psychos but the show is pretty explicit that they are hosed up losers. Stryker is a egotitical dickhead who gets thrown off really easly, Stella is narsstic moron who doesn't think two steps ahead in a plan because she lets spite dictate everything, even when it would be in her best interest to just leave. Krims is mobster who is control freak sociopath who is desperate enough straights to get hoodwinked by some fuckboy ex employee. but like the main cast do actually like each other in their own way.

also sorta releated. I love krims expression. it has some genuin menace https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1BfO7VlIw4&t=1387s like you know chaz had a very very very bad couple days after that where the best part was him dying.

Yeah, Picard starts with a kinda shameless rip-off of the plot of Mass Effect, has a very awkward second season and then chucks everything it established in the first two seasons for the serotonin hit of "you like seeing LeVar Burton talk to Brent Spiner, right? Velma is one of those breathtaking things where every single moment is just soaked through with raw unfiltered contempt. Both for the audience and the source material. And it's even weirder with all the producers and writers going around talking about how much they love the show and its characters. Mindy was especially atrocious about it because she has no loving clue who or what the character she's portraying is but claims Velma is her favorite. Imagine if you will you got called to play your favorite comfort character from your childhood and your way of showing it is by portraying them as the most hateful and most hated creature you can imagine. That's Mindy's deal and I still don't get what the end game was. Why even bother? Why put the energy in? There's a mystery for ya.
