My friend just linked this to me this morning too.

I haven't had a chance to check it out though

Yeah it is, it's what he linked. I'm home now and checked the store page and video.

Seems okay. Not as good as he was selling it, but maybe.

Looks like Bloodstained Curse of the Moon-alike is now an official part of the Classicvania genre with Darkest Abyss. It even has a free demo right now during the Steam Next Fest. Love that gigantic zombie horse head.

I played the demo in 20ish minutes. Was a lot of fun, but I wouldn't quite put it at Curse of the Moon's level. The difficulty was tuned pretty low, but there was enough friction to be enjoyable, and the final boss was a nice spectacle.

OK I want to be clear here, Alucard would NEVER do that! (in reference the Games subforum text change for October)

THIS GUY, however, would.

I'm not sure it's the fastest method, but it is pretty safe.

For me, nothing will ever top the part in Dawn of Sorrow where you fight Dimitri and he keeps copying your powers. It's supposed to trip you up, but I ways go in with the Witch bulletsoul and hurl cats at him. Then he does the same, and the fight just becomes two men tossing kittens at each other.

Best boss fight in the series.

Alternatively, you can take advantage of the fact that the souls he copies are always at lv1, so if you hit him with the Cave Troll soul, he'll be stuck using an attack that barely reaches past his arm.

So how many people here are aware of all the ridiculous glitches you can pull off in various games? I assume a good number people know the usual ones like the Succubus glitch in DoS that ultimately ends up granting Soma items that're meant to be exclusive to Julius mode and all the nonsense you can do in SoTN including using summons with fixed soundbites to glitch out the Librarian's menu, but these 2 are probably the silliest ones of the lot that I know of:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RbaHToSSuA

Summary: triggering the Ferryman to leave and leaving the Frozen Shade closes to him alive and then hitting them with Icebrand which they absorb a bunch of times will cause all the items found in the castle to respawn infinitely.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cy_xYHKRNI

Summary: using a whole bunch of smaller glitches together so that you retain charge from Mars+Griffin combo while charging the Saturn+Black Dog imp summon's attack and releasing it at a very precise time while switching screens gives Nathan a full-screen hitbox that instakills everything via max damage, including bosses.

I played SotN for entirely too many hours as a kid and remember getting literally every achievable pixel of map coverage in order to max out the Walk Armor far beyond its intended protection cap, including all the out of bounds glitch stuff. I don't think there was a single attack in that game that did more than 1 damage after that.

Whoever they got to do the backgrounds and overall stage concepts did a good job. That world map looks good too. The meta structure could very well make up for what looks like very "been there, done that" gameplay.

I'd be more open to it if the protag wasn't literally just a Belmont and we got variety like in Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, and the three of the bosses they showed were nostalgia wanking in the bad way-- giant enemy crab, the spore thing from Super Metroid, and that mask thing from Mario 2, like come the gently caress on.

Their other game - Prison City - is a pretty good one, and I remember playing demo of Simon Quest a long time ago but I think I've enjoyed it.
That said, dev's sense of humor is definitely just References. So I'm guessing the game's gonna play nice but be pretty insufferable if you don't like to see homages to other games.
