Kirkuk wasn't traditionally "Kurdish" to begin with, so the Peshmerga leaving the city in itself isn't necessarily a defeat, since they were holding territory that for all arguments was still Iraq proper. The thing with Kurdistan is that players like the US WOULD support a sovereign state, just not right now... But with Kurdistan already being fairly autonomous as a democracy, the US and Israel would back an endeavor later, or at least the claims are made. The biggest issue with the Kurds is that, in Iraqi Kurdistan, they've been ostracized and oppressed by others before, and so when they gained a sense of freedom and Independence, they did the unthinkable and actually used it to better themselves. But good ol' Sykes and Picot forgot about the Kurdish people in their brilliant line drawing, and they are getting tired of being left out of the whole "We have a country" club.

Apparently ISIS has taken advantage of the chaos to try and push back the Iraqis in the Kirkuk region and have take several villages. Somewhat unconfirmed but extreme and hearty lols if true.
