FogHelmut posted:Good luck getting anyone to use a Google product. Whenever someone insists on using Venmo with me, I make sure the mandatory transaction comment is set to public and very embarrassing. GPay doesn't even support comments so I remind them that this won't happen if they use that instead.

Is this just a US thing? I can email/send money directly from my bank and I think that's pretty normal in the rest of the civilized world. So why bother using some specialized app for it vs just using your normal banking app? But then again any time I talk to anyone about banking in the US its like half a step above what your average peasant could expect in the dark ages.

You can still do a direct deposit here if you really want to, but it leaves you with a lot less recourse to get your money back if something goes funny, and the last time I sent a DD to someone it turned out they banked with Wells Fargo and they reacted by using my info to completely drain that account with fraudulent charges. the cool thing about venmo is that all your purchases and fund transfers are public by default. your friends can see them and like or comment. And even if you set them to private the other party can make them public again. It's cool as hell

Yeah Venmo is the worst one. It's UI is all kinds of retarded and unintuitive. It's the Snap Chat of money transfer apps. The problem is I have Venmo, PayPal, Cash, and Google Pay because everyone I know uses something different.

What’s the typical use case for these apps? Never needed one. I don’t do drugs or buy porn.

At least GPay sells it anonymously to my favorite brands

Instead of bothering the waitstaff with splitting everything up into individual checks, or figuring it out on the spot and telling them what to put on each card, you just charge one card and figure it out whenever. Basically avoid all the dumb confusion at a restaurant with friends and just go straight to the bar.
