what about pvp? pvp was always what i ultimately did in AC even on white servers (when you could go pink which was peak white server pvp content). i never had the patience to level up to insane points to do whatever, including pvp. i'd always get to a point where I felt competent (mostly pvp'd with mages, sometimes bows. so around lvl ~80-90) and only had a ~5-10% fizzle rate

There's a new PvP server every few months. They don't last very long. Lots of drama as you would expect.

There's no pvp on levistras. I mean you CAN pvp, I've never seen anyone do it. And I'm not entirely sure PKLite is implemented on emulated servers.

pklite is implemented. Pklite bumping through objects (doors) is a thing too on ACE emu at least.

Yeah I'm not in it for the grind. I've been doing a nostaligia tour and playing with the new systems. I'm into the crossbow bonus I have, using missile, and using dirty fighting. I might get into recklessness too to ramp up the danger. I'm doing it all with self buffs etc. No power leveling stuff.

Last night I was running around the northern direlands land bridge and I found some cool mid-level structure sand dungeons not recorded in even the Decal based highly detailed maps. Thats what I love about AC - so much going on.

I will say, I really dislike how they, at some point, just made the town network instead of forcing people to navigate portal rings - really closed off the best part of AC, which was navigation.

EDIT: also no facility hub for now. We'll see how that goes for me.

well subway did exist at the start of the game which kind of trivialized it pretty quickly

not that people didn't use the city rings, though i think it was probably most used still on darktide because people avoided subway cause they didn't wanna get ganked

The subway, city rings, and variation in what different cities provided was one of the best parts of AC because it caused emergent gameplay around guilds controlling certain towns and lifestones. All the PVP politics and dynamics arose from those things and they are what made it so great. Specific places mattered.

I'm going to try this server this weekend:

Totally different approach to the EMU, olderschool AC than levistras, PK only, different combat systems.

I hear its fun.. Every 6 months or so someone comes up with a really cool system they've implemented server-side. We had a casino/betting system. A server-side PK ELO ranking system. Now the loot generation code has been dissected and we've got some servers like Dekarutide implementing ways to rip and replace properties on objects. Kinda wild what AC could have been if NoWorries had some more help in the final 3-4 years of retail. Don't love everything he put into the game, but it did progress a lot.

The last lead game developer for AC. Felt like AC was his CV builder.. He threw a lot of stuff in the game that was pretty bland, some things were good. Mixed bag the last couple years before it went into maintenance mode.

ah ok. was he the person who did like dual wielding and 2handed and poo poo?

my timeline on when that stuff was added is pretty hazy these days.

in any case i'll never forgive severlin (no idea if he was responsible) for shutting down both AC and AC2.

Yep. He would have been in QA and doing content at that time. The Master of Arms patch. Quite a few people quit after that. Imagine finding perfect weapons over the years just to have them changed to a skill your character doesn't use. More of a melee weapon problem than missile or caster but.. yeah.. Was an interesting time.

On my server I'm looking at ways to macro anything that has additional luck applied to the drop or chest pull in a specific loot tier (6). I think that boils down to just chests, and maybe specific named creatures.

I never went into any of the PK only dungeons but this looks interesting.

http://acpedia.org/wiki/Forbidden_Chest

http://acpedia.org/wiki/The_Forbidden_Catacombs

The keys drop from nearby creatures.

Does anyone remember if the chest pulls from Forbidden Chests was above average for the time period? Looking to find max tier 6 weapons.

ah that's cool. I had checked out of AC by then but when I came back and saw all that stuff i was like ??? someone was allowed to innovate on ACs very good and cool skill system? was just weird and cool after 10+ years or whatever!

He definitely wasn't responsible, in fact I'm pretty sure he was the only one keeping the lights on. He even tried to get WB or whoever had the rights to AC to give up the server files.

Yeah I was just kidding, I know sev was basically single-handedly responsible for reviving ac2 in the first point.

It still is wild to me that WB just shut them down instead of selling the rights.

Wish there were more post mortem/dev interviews about AC. There’s so little behind the scenes info out even though it was the second big 3D mmo in the world.

I had hoped by now there would be a clear winner of a server, something with at least 1000 regular players, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Clear winner would be Coldeve. Discounting the few dudes running armies (probably half, purely out of my rear end, but it's probably a conservative number), I'm sure it has several hundred regular players, and the population has been steadily trending up since it released.

https://treestats.net/player_counts?servers=Coldeve&range=All

And let's be real, end game AC can't really support that many people, there's only so many good hunting/xp spots.

Are they using custom .dat files or end-of-retail?

I think it's the first month or two of Dark Majesty? I can't place it.

I'm having a ton of fun on it though. Randomly generated loot at vendors is sweet. Non magic characters are totally viable. Game is much slower and more adventure focused for sure, which is what I like about AC anyway.

Unlike the end of retail game, low level quest items are the best I can find. I',m rocking the halls of the helm stuff and green mire yoroi. Still havent found better.

Is anyone playing on Drunkenfell? I started last week and it seems pretty decent. End of retail with some custom quests. Seems like an ok sized player base though I'm guessing it's like 30-40 people. Someone randomly dropped 250 MMD's on me when I wasn't paying attention.

I tried Dekarutide for 20mins or so and it seemed pretty neat with freezes and ignites on spells but dealing with spell comps again wasn't appealing. It also seemed really slow.

Levistras is best for nostalgia trips. Macros just kinda ruin everything and folks there will be respectful/careful to not boost you past all the nostalgia. With daily quest timers you don’t need to macro to advance quickly if that’s your goal.

Unless writing metas is your jam, then go to Coldeve

I’d second that, drunkenfell was ok but I am not crazy about the people who run it, they’re super cliquey and get pissed when anyone criticizes anything. Levistras was where I had the most fun even if no macros means it’s harder to do some stuff like colo or farming salvage or that kind of stuff.

I was dividing by 3 to get the 30 people number on Drunkenfell. I get the cliquey stuff from their discord.

I don't know what a meta is. I've only hit 75 so far with a 2h melee character. So starting over wouldn't be a huge deal.

What's RTW? I think the last time I actually played AC was in 2008 or something. I know void, summon, and all the weapon changes weren't a thing.

One of the biggest end game quests, level 180 or 200+. There is an abbreviation list in Levistras discord.

Keep in mind, Levistras actually nerfed a whole lot of exploits that was in ACE/retail in the spirit of playing the game as it was intended. It has some tasteful custom content too that turns the 50-100 grind into just running old quests and then adds some WoW style raid content for level 200/225+ if you want to get into that kind of thing.

The low level custom stuff is outlined in their wiki: https://acportalstorm.com/wiki/Marketplace_HearthSeeker_Quests It’s really just extra rewards for old nostalgia content so you aren’t stuck hunting golems for days for your Atlan anymore.

The RTW changes on the wiki aren’t up to date actually. It’s just the final boss room that changed so it’s not as easily exploitable. Basically you can’t logoff alts to get free rewards anymore and the boss scales with the number of folks there with a slightly improved reward. Many, but not all quests that had portals you could tie and summon to the final dungeon to skip right to the boss fight daily have had that unintended ability removed. Lots of the changes you wouldn’t notice unless you were actively exploiting them before or came from a base ACE server that was exploiting them. Other nerfs were for things like PKL door clipping being removed and multi-fellow Gauntlet being fixed. And yes, folks there regularly beat gauntlet without using custom items with just a fellow of 9, never macrod players.

You didn’t really see much of these exploits elsewhere cause folks just brute force macro instead— when everyone is forced to play by hand they found more tricks. That’s the spirit and fun on this server.

The other allure is the Uber BSD for lvl200+ can eventually give access to nerfed versions of rare weapons. So if you wanted to get one of those with a few weeks of running the content you can randomly get one of them and enjoy. Cool for folks who did a lot in retail but wasn’t on DT with all the duped items and never got to see or use them.

Oh, those beginning quest changes seem pretty good. I never did any of those end game quests. I never even hit 126 when that was still the level cap though. I don't remember if it was upped to 275 when I played last.
