When I was 17, my father was so stupid, I didn't want to be seen with him in public. When I was 24, I was amazed at how much the old man had learned in just 7 years.

Lotta good stuff in this thread. Thanks for the contributions all. Just discovered MURS, his clean style is what I look for in rap. Enunciation, diverse rhymes, and also good backing tracks.

I originally got my rap start with Warren G Regulate and Beastie Boys License to Ill. From there I branched out into Biggie and Tupac. All of which are great, and each has a different style. But I listened to them by the whole album, which really contributed to how I appreciate them. The production values of an album as more then just a list of tracks is something that I feel really contributes to why I like rap.

Obviously there is The Chronic, which should absolutely be listened to in it's entirety. But here are a few more (full albums only). These are all extremely popular and you've almost certainly heard at least 2 songs from each of these without realizing it.

Before I make my suggestion, its important that you know that I don't like rap. I don't listen to rap. I know some rappers, i've heard some songs.. but its just not for me.

That being said, there is one rapper I like and he pretty much only does freestyle. If you haven't heard of Harry Mack, then my guy (girl, or other) you are missing out.

Harry is a 30+ yr old rapper who mostly freestyles. About a year ago he started blowing up on youtube because of how insanely good he is. I'm linking one of my favorite video of him, Omegle 30. He goes on omegle, connects with random stranger and asks them a few words. He then uses these to make up a song on the fly.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtjdWxFcOc4

I highly recommend you watch the whole thing, he uses his interaction with people to add to the song.

Honestly, I recommend all his omegles, its amazing. Another one of my favorites is 29 for the last 2 songs

Hi I'm a big nerd and I just like music but I don't know all the culturals of it too good, I think I have a decent idea of what "backpack rap" is, but I'm not too sure. Like, my understanding is backpack is poo poo where you would listen to it by yourself but like, you're not gonna party to it or anything? And there's some kind of derogatory sense I'm picking up about it like it's also dorky/corny in some respect I dunno

For me, getting into hip hop was about finding tracks where I liked the beat and samples, and appreciating flow, lyricism, and cool rhyme schemes came later as I listened to more stuff. I also sort of wandered into enjoying trap via EDM. I think the first artist I bought tracks from was Chamillionaire, and I went through a phase where I really liked 90's boom-bap type tracks because I could understand how the rhyme scheme related to the beat.

It's got a more specific meaning, but my understanding is that it's generally pretty far from mainstream and often focused on social and cultural issues. I think more often it's throw around to refer to "intellectual" rap that white dudes like and go :hmmyes:

People who listen mostly to backpack rap will often say that it's "true hip hop" or something like that.

I feel pretty safe saying modern backpack is rap for and by nerds. lots of focus on complicated beats and polysyllabic rhymes composed of big fancy words. like, DOOM is backpack, but his stuff isn't really socially conscious.

Don’t get me wrong, a huge chunk of what I listen to is backpack rap and I do really enjoy a lot of stuff that could be classified that way but 1.) I’m not implying it’s necessarily the best, or even a good way to get into rap and 2.) it’s neither better than nor worse than other subgenres of hip hop. I guess the term has taken on a pejorative meaning, which I don’t intend.

Yeah, I think there's some truth to that. definitely don't want to imply that any type or sub-genre is better just by existing, there's plenty of bad backpack rap out there.
