How was a British rapper's track unironically described as hard?

For something more useful, I've been a big fan of Vado ever since he's made a poo poo ton of Cam'ron + him mixtapes the past couple of years. He raps about coke a lot but he's still got kind of a vintage mid/late 90's flow.

depends on what part of the 'scene' you're talking about but in general it's almost like the bay is a dividing line... people are cool with each other but there isn't a ton of back-and-forth across the bridges and all that

also i mean there is just a much different attitude, oakland is a lot more about 'fun' musically you know? like i am from SF and i love SF but oakland is generally more about getting crazy and having fun whereas dudes from SF are usually either on some thugged-out poo poo or trying really hard to "MAKE YOU THINK"

but i mean both sides of the bay have their ultra-backpacker poo poo going on too and those guys intermingle a lot more -- like you probably aren't gonna see san quinn on a bunch of oakland tracks but it's not gonna surprise you when lyrics born or somebody plays in The City six times in a month

They have somewhat separate scenes that often work with each other. For many Bay Area rappers i'd say it's a "city first", "Bay Area close second" kind of thing, when it comes to what location they rep, and who they work with in their music.

I think you're exaggerating things a little. Oakland, SF, Vallejo, Richmond, San Jose, Berkeley, East Palo Alto, Pittsburgh, etc, all have their own scene, but they all interact with each other to a large degree as well. It is one single metropolitan area...hell, SF and Oakland border each other, and lots of people in the Bay's black community (especially the poorest parts in SF, Oakland, Richmond, and some others) constantly move back and forth between those neighborhoods, and this includes lots of rappers. Half of the black population of places like Antioch and Fairfield for example are actually people who were priced out of places like SF and Oakland. Tons of videos shot by rappers from Oakland, Vallejo, Berkeley, etc, are filmed at least partially in SF too. You were also talking about San Quinn, and he was born in Oakland, but raised in SF for example...and yes he does get on tracks with Oakland people:

Casual & San Quinn - Off the Pacific
Philthy Rich ft. San Quinn & Stevie Joe - "California Soul"
J. Stalin ft. San Quinn - "Posted"
San Quinn - Hell Yeah (this one's produced by an oakland dude)

he also makes entire albums with Oakland dudes:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welcome_to_Scokland

and here are some more SF and Oakland rapper collabs:

Jern Eye ft. Spank Pops & J Billion - CALI
J Billion ft Spank Pops & 1 O.A.K - Cali Way (the singer is from Oakland on this one)
Big Bread Ed ft. JB Da Original & Stunnarifik - Black Tz And Hoodies

^and there are plenty more examples where those came from...

Also, this record label: http://www.swtbrds.com/, which is behind up and coming SF rapper DaVinci, also has some Oakland rappers signed to it, and their in house production team has at least a couple Oakland dudes who are part of it.

edit: but yeah i think you're right that the backpackers generally do a bit more intermingling.

Serch is BACK! posted:

I dunno...during the hyphy days, Oakland and elsewhere was definitely more about it than SF itself was, but there was some Hyphy coming out of SF too, and people here were still listening to it as much as anyone else in the Bay Area was. Otherwise, the rapping/musical styles (backpacker, gangster, anything) in the Bay area are pretty similar no matter what part you're in.
