I always thought that the biggest lost potential was Killa Sin. dude probably had at least one classic solo album in him back during the killarmy days. unfortunately he's locked up right now and is also beefing with 9th prince so he won't be on the new killarmy album.

I'll agree that by many peoples definition Lil B is "weird", but i gotta defend against anyone saying he's crappy. To be fair, if the only stuff from him you've ever heard are songs like Ellen Degeneres, Wonton Soup, or Pretty Boy, and other similar tracks, then it's no wonder why you think he sucks. But for all his joke/crap songs, he has a lot of stuff like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=corY-FZAZog

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DygSUDf9u4o

Lil B - Thank You Based God
Lil B - The Old Days
Lil B - Times Blue
Lil B - Sending Shots
Lil B - Realist Alive
Lil B - D.O.R.(Death Of Rap)
Lil B - Cold War
Lil B - The Trap
Lil B - I Am The Hood
Lil B - Walk The World
Lil B - I Am

He may not be the Jesus of rap, like some people seem to think, but he actually does have some skill. Lil B is part rapper (evidence: his good poo poo), and part gigantic troll/marketing genius who seems like he's just having fun and doesn't give a gently caress what people think about him (evidence: the retarded poo poo most people have heard by him, which is what made him so well known).

edit: or maybe you knew all that and think all those songs suck rear end too. But...i can't comprehend something like that :psyboom:

I think noz got it right when he said Lil B sometimes raps bad as an artistic/stylistic choice. He's got a lot of stuff where it's pretty obvious he has at worst average rap skills (I think it's actually a great deal better than that, but I can see how some might not like it) but he's also not afraid to do stuff that's...utterly stupid (but possibly fun).

Oh yeah, I did offer two potential reasons, either because they're being ironic or because they have terrible taste. :) The irony part was more for Lil B fans, sorry if I worded that wrong. There are plenty of other mainstream artists and southern rappers and radio rappers that sell just as well and have poo poo that "knocks stuff off shelves and makes folks get buck", you don't have to resort to people that flow like they just got pulled out of the homeless shelter. :)

TBH I kinda blame BET for that. Like, why would anyone think a dude who talks about how he dropped out of school and is now rich would care about any of that stuff? But he can't really go around saying that, so it's just gonna put him on the spot. And it's nothing he's ever really discussed in his music so why bring it up?

also after saying you like Living Legends, youve opened up a door to ~130 albums by all their members and offshoots.. of course most of those are garbage so just stick with Grouch, Eligh, and Murs. Murs 316, any of the G&E albums, and Heroes In The City of Dope are good starting points i guess

you still ain't get it bruh Flocka's got pretty much nothing BUT flow. Seriously listen to some of these Lex Luger instrumentals or better yet any of a million "freestyles" and tell me Waka doesn't own the track more than anyone else.

Alright look you probably like Slaughterhouse right? I'mma give an example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ij4I67FHMhM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=En7fj53GpZ0

One of these songs is a party-starter, the other one plays only to "a room full of dudes in hoodies nodding their heads with their arms crossed" (who said that itt? luv it mayne!). Gucci doesn't even sound that great on the remix, his verse breaks the mood (too lyrical yo). Don't get me wrong, I'm not tryna say Flocka is a better rapper than Joell or Crooked I (he's not) but he sure as hell makes better party/fight music.

I think alansmithee may be the only dude I've encountered online or irl who likes Flocka but not Gucci. but yeah when I first heard of this cat calling himself "Waka Flocka Flame" I thought a)that name sucks and b)this guy is worse than OJ da Juiceman or that dude "Tha Joker" that the high school kids I worked with like. I came around once I stopped looking for clever wordplay or really any classically lyrical type poo poo from him. In the context of the beats he favors Flocka is absolutely a good rapper.

I don't see how he embarrassed himself that badly in that 106 & Park clip. All he said was that he dropped out of school but liked geometry and that you should vote but he doesn't know anything about the electoral process. Like alansmithee said that's something you'd ask a 2pac or Killer Mike to talk about, not a guy with a record called Luv Dem Gun Sounds.

Related: the remix of Rollin with Officer Ricky dropped. It's pretty good. A lot of people have said it but it really is amazing how far he's come since Hustlin.

Oh, and I was looking for something about Triggerman to explain bounce to my friend and I found this Top 50 NOLA Raps list Noz just did for Complex

Wale's a dude who's gonna end up like Ras Kass or someone I bet. It's like he wants to be a megastar too badly and is jumping all over styles instead of just making good music. Although I wish he'd have saved that GaGa feature until she was a bit more popular.

I've always thought his big problem is he just doesn't have a real "hook"-like he has no personality that makes people want to listen to him. I knwo he's from DC (area) but he reminds me a lot of a slightly-softer Philly dude-someone who can rap their rear end off but for whatever reason is almost instantly forgettable to most people.

And going back to the Waka chat, he's horrible as a "rapper" but over the production he gets he sounds good and makes good music. Like it's hard to not get hype listening to Flockaveli, almost reminds me of M.O.P. in that way.

Very few people can overcome being outed as a former corrections officer when their whole image is the Tony Montana/Miami Coke Rap, so I give Ross huge credit for that, too.

Wale is one of the weirdest guys to me, both on album and live. On his mixtapes and albums he does all these different styles, but in the end he just picks poo poo with that Go-Go drum pattern and its getting really played out. Ever since the Mixtape about Nothing he's fallen off harder and harder and his guest spots have been laughably bad. I used to grab something based on Wale's presence alone, but now that turns me off. I have to agree with alansmithee on Wale, when he says that he's making himself a moot point, much like Ras Kass. Wale's concerts are so hit and miss, too, that I really don't know how he continues to do well touring.

Jock Mocken, thanks a ton for that link. Noz knows what's up, but I never check his writing on Complex.

Anyway, I agree on him not being able to really pull off the hard rapper image. I usually play his poo poo when I want to listen to something fun and uptempo and that's how I've associated him for years. I think he's missed his shot at blowing up.

Hey guys, kind of an out of left field question, but I've been listening to a bunch of old rap songs and I keep hearing this sample pop up of a woman saying, "Hey!"

Off the top of my head, I know it's in Ghostface's "Mighty Healthy" and Lord Finesse's "True and Livin," but I know I've heard it in other songs. It seems to be one of those common samples you hear used in tons of songs, but I have no idea where it came from. Just wondering if any of you more knowledgeable in hip hop could sate my curiousity and tell me where it's from.

If you don't know where a sample in a golden age or old school song is from, you can probably just assume it's from James Brown. Listen to his discography, it's good music and you get to geek out when you recognize a sample like three times a song.
