K-Flow posted:the wu tang (rza's beats) sound pretty unique to me (possibly because they are how i got into rap) so it's hard to directly bite the style like you can with a 3 6 song, and that's not a slight against them at all, but they definitely heavily influenced the sound on a lot of rap records coming from ny

That's some pretty cool stuff luckdragon, thanks. Cities Aviv also has a Name your price album that's along those lines. Beats that are spaced out but still grounded and a pretty good flow through out it.

I finally heard Ultramagnetic MC's Critical Beatdown, and I think it's a great album. I'm assuming 90% of you guys have already heard it so I'm not trying to impress anyone, I'm just posting it cause if you're one of the small percentage of people who hasn't already heard it you should go listen to it now. I've heard it a couple of times but I don't even remember individual lines because I vibe out to it so hard Rap music.

pretty shocking u havent heard that one until now. but nice one on admitting it. honestly kingcobweb, i think that album stood the test of time a lot better than most 80s rap albums. like i think most criticisms you could have on it can be applied to most 80s rap. plus the production was way ahead of its time. each to his own though

has anyone listened to the prince paul album "politics of the business"? it's basically a satirical rap album. but on the last song after the skit, the two secret songs are really loving good. completely forgot about them. he gives the fans (almost a reward for listening to the album) 2 songs he actually tried on. fantastic beats. would put a youtube link up but its not even on there. prince paul doesn't get much love

Critical Beatdown is obviously the more important/influential record and does still sound good, but my favorite Ultramagnetic MCs joint will always be Poppa Large (East Coast Mix) by Da Beatminerz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGkyva_3fy4 as an interesting aside, one of my friends has virtually no interest in rap... except for Ultramagnetic MCs and Slick Rick. Go figure.

And yeah I heard it was pretty much a joke album, which I respect that he went through with it but it wasn't something I wanted to actually listen to. Also FRAT RAP PIONEER MC PAUL BARMAN actually had Prince Paul production on his first EP, and it's really good if you haven't heard it. I think most people forget about him just because he hasn't done anything in a long time and was always kinda a background dude. Also fwiw I've heard he's really difficult to work with which might be another reason he doesn't get the pub he probably deserves.

kingcobweb posted:The rapping on that album is so stilted that I don't think it stands up very well now, honestly. I think the rapping probably sounded odd then too, Keith has always pretty much just ignored the beat in interesting ways and Ced Gee was never a great rapper (he's pretty decent on the first two Ultramagnetic albums, but then he became incredibly bad). I don't think it really detracts from the album though, it's supposed to be weird space rap from the future and it certainly doesn't sound like any other album from 1988. http://youtu.be/S41a6HjOnFw June 27 tribute. I've seen Propain posted in here and Kirko Bangz and L E $ have been gettin some hype lately. Houston has this weird inferiority complex, and I guess I'm feeding that when I say how it weird it is to see these cats pay tribute because they tend to run in their own circle, but it's cool. Though Propain is from Dallas I think. e: Missed that Cory Mo edited the beat until now. New Trae drops tomorrow. If you're in Houston, you should head to SF2 south right about now. I just got around to sitting down and listening to the Random Axe album last night and I have to say: I was really unimpressed. P's a beast, and brings it some on this album, I consider Tronic one of the best albums of the past 5 years, and Ode to the Ghetto was one of the best albums of the year it came out (Which year that is I can't remember). But as a collective they're worse than the sum of their parts. Not to mention some weak rear end guest spots, essentially every guest verse is worse than all the other verses on the track. The beats are a little too out there for my tastes, especially with P and Guilty on the track, a little bit of ignorant poo poo instead of the crazy space hop poo poo Black went for. ^New MMG tape is ridiculous though, that's true.
