I have a tip for all shield melee characters:

Always leave enough stamina on your bar to block without breaking defense when attacking. Its all amount energy management, and if you whittle away at each enemy and keep them in front of you you're invincible to almost all attacks except magic/elementals.

My second tip is for the skeletons in the middle-path caves:

Always chase down the death-mage before engaging the skeletons, because they will resurrect all skeletons you kill within seconds. If that means losing your souls because you had to go balls deep into enemy territory so be it. Death-mages don't respawn, so kill them at all costs.

Or you could just spend a bit farming a green chunk in the depths and make a divine weapon which prevents them from being resurrected.

I've rang the top bell and I am working through the forest area now, but I don't think I've encountered any new bosses at all. So far all the boss fights have been remodeled bosses from Demon's Souls with the same attack animations and behavior patterns. I feel kinda ripped off paying $60 for a new game that is just a slightly different version of Demons Souls.

I've put quite a lot into dex (28) and I'm pleasantly surprised that I can use my bandit knife to take down a lot of enemies. I put a few points into end, although I wish I'd added a few more to be honest. Circle strafe the knights, make sure you have a 100% physical block shield and get behind them for backstabs. Be aware that the big club wielding guy at the bottom of the staircase that has a door leading into Darkroot Basin crushes any guard and removes all your HP (at least he does with me) with his two handed attacks.

It's all about positioning.

Maybe you're thinking of something else but you don't have to fight any ghosts in the depths (sewers underneath the burg) that I know of. You certainly don't have to fight any to progress through the area and reach the bonfire + slime farming room.

He's near the start. After the third column that you slide down. He's standing there in the dark and kicks you down a hole. Just up the ladder from the bonfire. Since you've cleared that area, any tips on how to handle those crawling skeletons that are tearing me apart?

Go down to New Londo, get the Estoc. The Estoc does both thrusting and regular damage with two separate, useful attack patterns - weak attacks do thrusting, strong do regular. It meshes perfectly with the thief parry/backstab playstyle due to also having a high critical damage stat. It has decently high base stats, and it scales well with Dexterity.

I recommend upgrading it some. I'm at about 18 dex with an Estoc +5 and comfortably killing the knights.

Dexterity, Endurance and Vitality are your main stats, yes, but don't neglect to pump a bit of Strength if necessary or some Intelligence or Faith if you want to branch out into spells. The Thief starts with one spell slot due to his attunement, I would recommend the Heal miracle.

Is it worth upgrading the lightning spear or should I save my titanite chunks for a weapon with better base damage? Basically I'm asking how rare titanite chunks are.

Also, I asked this before but didn't get an answer I don't think: Do you get back your upgrade materials when you downgrade a weapon?

Faster to run from the valley of the drakes side. Run though the double doors. Go up two sets of stairs inside, and through a wooden building (running through the skull dude here might be tough). Run up more stairs, and go straight through the building you enter. Hang a left, go up the big set of stairs straight ahead. Hang another left, walk across the narrow platform and through the fog gate. Put on the ring from the wolf and fall.

You can farm them from the skull fuckers in the drained new londo area. Exactly the area I am talking about above. I just finished farming enough of them to get that 16 strength greatshield up to +14. It has 82 stability at that level, and it increases to 84 at +15.

I kind of want to try rolling a low level character through the game now, just so that I can put down a soul sign by the gargolyes/capra and destroy them with a +5 lightning longsword or something.

If I had to pick "the right values" for strength and dex, I would say 16 and 14. 16 str gets you the eagle shield, and 14 dex lets you use the longbow. Honestly, you probably don't need more than that.

They kind of flail around a whole lot after attacking, so rolling out of the way is the easiest way to deal with them. Then again, since they're in the tomb of giants, this is also a good way to kill yourself. FromSoft designed an enemy with an obvious weakness that you specifically can't use in the area you fight them in. :v:

I'm having the same issue on PS3. I haven't been invaded or been able to invade anyone since about SL40. I'm currently SL60 and it's been really lonely!

I'm pretty sure that in Demon's Souls, you could not play multiplayer with someone on NG+ if you were still on your original game, so it's possible that if people are beating the game at earlier levels, the higher you get, the more alone you'll be until NG+.

I'm having the same issue. It almost seems as if it's not really controller lag so much as skipping input? Like you'll use an item but it won't actually go through until you press another button, usually LB because you want to put your shield up. It happens rare enough that it's not a huge issue but often enough to be an unfair cause of death, like the lovely d-pad swapping out your shield for your bow when you just wanted to get your estus flask out.
