I've going nuts trying to find a particular song. I figured I might as well ask my friendly neighborhood goon rap thread since I've been turned on to so much good stuff through this thread. I seem to remember a song that uses the same sample from "ain't no love in the heart of the city" as Jay Z. I also remember it being a group track for some reason. Multiple guys rapping. I could be totally nuts here and it be all just be from some wacked out fever dream or something, but I can almost hear the lyrics...but not quite. It's so hard to search for a song without any lyrics. Looking at all the "who sampled" sites, etc, has come up empty. any ideas?

Not sure how I got that mixed up but it happens. (That was 60 Minutes of Funk volume 3, which now that I think about it, had some amazing tracks. Cam'ron went hard on that.)

I'm sure this has very little to do with the general discussion in here, but I love Childish Gambino but dislike most rap simply due to lazy, creatively uninteresting lyrics. So far I've been recommended Lil B, Wale, and J. Cole as artists with clever and/or well-written lyrics. Is this accurate? And if not, what rap does have particularly well-written lyrics? I'd prefer if it's not straight nerdcore, but Glover certainly has his fair share of nerd references, but I'd also prefer if it's not straight gangster.

Yeah, Lil B is the way to go. His music is very inspirational, rare, and positive. He has some of the most cleverest lyrics in the game right now. Tracks like "baby Baby" "Miley Cyrus" "Woo Woo Swag" and "Paris Hilton" are lyrical masterpieces. You might want to check out Kreayshawn as well, she is the AZ to Lil B's Nas.

As the previous poster said, Lil B is definite a lyrical ace if you like Child Gambino. Wale, defintely, especially his verse on "No Hands". In fact, if you're into glover, you'll probably love "No Hands". And if you're into lyrics, there is this 10 minute Kool Keith freestyle where he actually says "lyrical" maybe 50 times. he is also one of the most famous lyricists of all time and has the great nerdcore champion album "Dr. Octagon 3030"

Nobody reads the first post. It's gonna be difficult for us to give you any recs because "lazy, creatively uninteresting lyrics" is so nebulous. What exactly do you feel is lacking in the poo poo you don't like? Content, rhyme structure, vocabulary? If it's content, know that most rap songs boil down to simple boasts at heart: it's the MC's job to make that interesting in some way. Check out the intro track off P.Dukes' last mixtape, Easy Money 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W59tssc6XT4 All the wordplay makes what's essentially a 3 minute "I'm awesome" sound, well, pretty awesome. Still, it takes a really good rapper to pull that off, so I can understand why you might find Rick Ross for instance pretty unappealing. Every song is on the exact same fake-mafia poo poo and he's really only a competent rapper at best. I'll co-sign J. Cole and Wale. I haven't listened to Cole's album but his mixtapes were very solid. Wale's output is definitely kind of spotty but he's got a pretty good selection of good tracks. I'd say stay away from Based God for the most part; he's something of an acquired taste and pretty polarizing. I'll go ahead and say you should check out thread favorite Big KRIT. Great production and strong lyricism with a good amount of social commentary. Start with KRIT Wuz Here. Jock Mocken fucked around with this message at 16:23 on Oct 18, 2011 |

The Rooster posted:Can you clarify well-written? Also, why would discussing lyrical MC's be outside the general discussion here? Oh I didn't mean outside of the scope of the thread, just outside of the current discussion. It was a way of saying "Sorry I didn't read more than a page of the thread but I have a question that I didn't see being discussed at the moment." As for "well-written" I meant thoughtful, clever, or poetic, to a degree beyond the norm with a vocabulary beyond remedial - I understand that backpack seems to be a dirty word in most circles, but it has an appeal to me musically. I don't mind self-aggrandizing lyrics as long as there's something more to them - though it took me a while to get used to. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Initial listens are proving fruitful.
