Speaking of Dissection, doesn't anyone know where to find the old style version of the Storm of Light's bane t-shirt with the blue cross on the back? The newer one is pretty awful.

Do any of you have a source for either Ash Borer or Skagos merch? All I was able to dig up was the Gilead Media site which doesn't have anything in stock ATM. I'd love to score a shirt or a backpatch (or an old shirt to turn into a backpatch)if possible.

Read all the way through this thread in a couple of weeks, holy crap. I've tried to get into black metal a few times and it hasn't ever really stuck until just lately when (largely due to suggestions here) I've been listening to a lot of Windir, Primordial (if they count, I'm not sure) Ulver, Immortal, and Moonsorrow. I'm not sure what those particular ones say about my taste, but it's a refreshing change from my usual blend of folk and death. the yeti fucked around with this message at 15:49 on Jan 13, 2012 |

I can't stop listening to Funeral Mist's Maranatha and really want to know if there are BM bands with vocals similar to Mortuus - something powerful and agressive sounding rather than usual black metal shrieking. He just sounds so emotional (or bestial as much as I hate this word) Having said that Marduk live are so loving boring. Or maybe I just happened to see them on a bad day

New Abigail Williams is streaming on Hails and Horns. Only a couple songs in so far but apparently they're getting in on the whole post-rock influenced black metal thing. Some pretty heavy doom influence on the 2nd track as well. http://www.hailsandhorns.com/streaming-2/abigail-williams-interview-music-stream/

I've only heard one of their other albums (I believe it's their first) and it's much more symphonic black metal. This album seems like a bit of a new direction. As for Alcest, it'd be hard to top Ecailles de Lune but I dig the new album. The second track, which I won't even attempt to spell/pronounce, is easily one of my favorite Alcest songs. I recently stumbled upon this project: http://bookofsand.bandcamp.com/ Book of Sand is an avant garde black metal project out of minneapolis, I don't know much about it at the moment, there's very little out there beyond a bandcamp and an interview. It's hit or miss with some of the material but the newest album absolutely blew me away and the song "no flags" (http://bookofsand.bandcamp.com/track/no-flags) is killer. Got Ondskapt - Dödens evangelium and Inquisition - Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm (that name!) in the mail today. Glad I found Ondskapt through this thread, I definitely like their album the best so far, just really high overall quality stuff. I have a feeling Omnious Doctrines... will grow on me more over time, though. Also that album has some odd packaging. The case is thin as a digipak but otherwise slightly larger than a DVD case. 'A5' I think it's called, doesn't really fit anywhere.

When I originally bought them I thought they looked cool and collectible, but years later I still have yet to find a good place for them on my shelves.

Taake - Noregs Vaapen I found to be better then expected. Weird change-up in the first song with Abbath's vocals, but otherwise pretty drat good I thought. I'm sure you guys discussed it some time ago, guess I missed it. Anything better then that come out in 2011 ? Found it to be a weak year, Evilfeast - Wintermoon Enchantment was good but it wasn't anything progressive or different for him.

There's no shortage of excellent metal that came out last year, but since this is the black metal thread, I'll refrain from posting other subgenres and just recommend that you give Insane Vesper's Abomination of Death album a listen. Skogen's Svitjod album is pretty solid too, but it might not be what you're looking for (it's more in the vein of Drudkh and Fen than it is Taake). To be honest, I'm in the same situation in that I haven't listened to anything from 2011 more than Noregs Vaapen, but there's plenty of great stuff.
