Sir Cornelius posted:

In Scandinavia, especially Denmark and Norway, it's two-fold. Tax speculation and resale value. If a car is a part of your production equipment, it gets a massive tax-reduction.

Once you've used the vehicle a while (150 or 200K km., I don't remember the exact number) you can resell it to a private party with a significantly reduced tax-payment. That really matters for countries where vehicle tax is close to 2 times the purchase price of said vehicle.

To use the above to your advantage, a lovely car that can't be expected to run at least 300K km. won't do. That's why the only rental cars are pretty nice high-end cars and almost all taxis are high-end Mercedes.

The switch from diesel is another tax issue.

A lot of taxi companies makes almost all their bottom line from resale of used vehicles and so does a lot of rental companies.

Car taxes in Denmark are completely unreasonable by any imaginable standard.

Not a SHO, it's a Limited, but like I said, the only cars I've ever had have been 4cyl econoboxes or midsize cars. The most "powerful" car I've had before this was a 2005 Monte Carlo 3.4 with a whopping 175hp. So for me to have 270 feels fast. It's all relative to what you've driven before I guess.

My budget was ~$23000. I needed something with 4 doors (daughter on the way), decent acceleration, bluetooth (I'm on the phone for work a lot), and comfortable.

I tested out the Charger, Maxima, a Hyundai Genesis sedan, Chrysler 300 (with the older V6, not Pentastar), and an Avalon.

The Genesis and Avalon had the same problems, they were boring as hell and felt very elderly.

The 300 was nice but was super slow. The engine felt way underpowered. Plus the interior felt cheap.

I liked the Maxima a lot but the CVT was a dealbreaker. I hated that thing.

So it came down to the Charger and the Taurus. The Charger almost won, but I couldn't pass up the options in the Taurus. The Chargers I found were all former rental base models with the stock stereo.

The Taurus on the other hand has Sync, leather heated/cooled seats, Adaptive cruise control, nav, memory seats, keyless access/ignition, dual auto climate control, 12 speaker Sony stereo...I could go on but you get the picture. In the end the Taurus was just a much nicer car for the money than the Charger.

Did you even consider the G8? You probably could have gotten the V8 Gt model for $23k.

I hope you got the manual instead of the DSG. As much as I like the fauxtomatic in regular cars, it kinda ruins performance versions. I tested a Golf R in DSG followed by Scirocco R in manual, and the latter just felt more fun.

When we bought our G8 GT around 6 months ago, we paid about $23k for it. The other day when I went to the dealer for something, they had another G8 GT in for $26k. With less options and the same miles as mine. How does that work?

Only on income above ~$60K. Below that, the tax rate is a much more reasonable ~35-40% on average.

We pay a lot of taxes, but it isn't that hosed. And we don't get hit with $600K medical bills.

I only know all too well because my girlfriend is Danish, and looking to import my car... the charges are eye-watering, most likely more than twice what I actually paid for the car.

I know the other way round (bringing a car to the UK from within the EU) there's barely a charge.

Couple of new pics. Cleaning up the installations. The inlet manifold in being welded to make more room, the radiator was tilted back to make room for the intercooler in front of it. Some preliminary fitment of intercooler tubing. A by-pass valve should still be made to fit somewhere in there.

Possible tyres to be used on the track... would have to find some suitable wheels.

I recommend you inspect your records for info about the last timing belt service. You should also check and see if the lower ball joints were replaced. These cars are known for losing their LBJ's. This can cause you to lose control of the car and damage to the fenders.

Man, I know, right? Before you know it they'll be mandating stupid poo poo like rear-view mirrors (I can just turn around and look behind me, right?), or side-view mirrors (I can just turn and look to the sides, right?), or a third brake light (the existing ones are good enough, right?), or seatbelts (I'd rather be "thrown clear" in a collision).

Shut the gently caress up about the backup cameras already. There are vehicles (SUVs and trucks for one), where it's pretty much loving impossible to have a good field of view behind you when backing up. Anything that increases your visibility is a good thing.

Hey, I'm all for safety features. These seriously encourage people to look forward. I get it if the whole thing is to see if something is right behind your bigass SUV before you back up, but somehow I'm thinking you don't need one in your Miata.

That's just what I'm looking for in a little low-slung two-seater sports car, a loving navigation system that's only there because there is supposed to be a backup camera.

e: it's mandatory in all cars, not just SUVs and trucks. If that was the case, no problem. But I have a feeling that people are going to rely on these more than ever, even in sedans with good visibility.

They can always just integrate a small screen into the rearview mirror for the backup camera, you know.

What the NHTSA should be requiring, in my opinion, is a high-mounted, front-facing brake light (i.e., top-center of the windshield) so that drivers (or pedestrians!) can know if another vehicle approaching them is braking or not. Useful for idiots that want to turn left across the oncoming traffic lane (or right, for those of you in England/Japan/Australia/etc.) and don't use their goddamn turn signals.

[edit] Hell, how can I research to see if that idea's been patented yet? Easy get-rich-quick scheme, perhaps? :v:
