That's actually a pretty simple 2 dimensional design, they could quite easily be one-off

No, that's not the case (And the van is awesome, it would go like the proverbial) - in a rotary that has a few kms on it or modified the alternator belt will more often than not have slippage issues (exactly like I have right now with a RX7) - cogged belts or double alternator belts are the fix.

I saw a pretty awesome Civic coming to work this morning, but seeing as I was driving, no picture. Roughly 60% of the rear bumper was made out of duct tape. I can only imagine she caught it on something and tore a giant hunk out of it after backing into god knows what. The light on that same side was made out of red celophane tape. Along with this the front bumper on the driver side was also missing a huge chunk.

I wish we had safety inspections out here in CO instead of just stupid emissions. Some of the poo poo I see on the road amazes me.

Also, I got my first chance to run Boomer off the road on Friday, but he was 2 lanes over and I couldn't get to him before the 225 exit. :(

Why is this, out of curiosity? Is the crank pulley on the rotary particularly small?

I mean it does seem to be a genuine issue, I just wonder why it seems to affect rotaries so much when most V-belted cars get by just fine with a single V-belt driving the alternator (and sometimes another accessory too).

:stare: is that going to charge at idle? What I mean is: don't alternators generally need ~2000RPM to start charging? That pulley ratio is...low. (assuming that's a street car)

Stock rotaries can turn at rpm's that stock configuration piston engines can only wistfully dream of. When was the last time you had to worry about the accessories being turned by an engine at 9000 rpm?

Yow. Even my Matrix had an 8100 RPM redline. I think it cut off at 8500, but I wouldn't swear to it.

When I picked up a rebuilt alternator (Napa Lifetime, if you're curious), I got a nifty chart, almost like a dyno graph, showing how much power it put out at <x> RPM.

At 700, it cranked out 30 amps (100 amp alternator). At 4500 the chart showed 105 amps. The lights only dim at idle if my a/c is running and the fan is on high.

The "need to rev it to get it started" is only if you're running a single wire alternator configuration - and even then once it's started charging, it keeps charging until the field collapses (which won't normally happen until you shut off the engine or it drops to some absurdly low RPM).

Wish I could find that chart again, it was kinda neat. Though there's a sticker showing idle output (amperage+voltage @ 700 RPM) + peak output on the alternator case too. I'll have to remember to grab a picture of it next time I open the hood.
