This was posted in the UFC thread:MassRayPer posted:I addressed what Joe Rogan thinks in another post, and fights are independent events, you cannot tell anything about how one will be judged by how another was judged. Case in point: Lots of Leonard Garcia decisions made people think Nick Diaz would win the Condit fight because he kept moving forward and missing punches, they were surprised when the right guy actually won. So no, I didn't miss your other points because they had nothing to do with the fight. I understand why you would sympathize with someone who moves forwards and misses punches but it isn't really relevant to the judging of this fight. And I wanted to ask a follow-on question. Regarding bad decisions, do the commissions (or Dana or Kizer) correct the judges for subsequent fights? Like with some of the obviously bad ones, (like any of Garcia's), do they advise the judges differently before the next fight? Or are the judges set in their ways for the most part? Like I'm wondering if someone said something to the judges before the Condit fight to the effect of "winging haymakers and missing doesn't mean Diaz should win."

I know Pride had a couple, but has a UFC fight ever been proven/even heavily suspected as being worked? I mean, obviously judges' decisions will always have that question, but have there been any cases of someone straight taking a dive?

RobBorer posted:what about matt brown vs footstomps drago that one's pretty weird though because there's like 3 times when it probably would have been stopped if matt brown kept fighting instead of having a little conference with yves about stopping it. that's what's so brutal about matt brown's style though, the way he never really pours it on. he just keeps delivering one heavy, deliberate shot after another at a moderate but steady pace. when he really hurts an opponent they end up absorbing so many big shots well after the point where the fight would end if he just swarmed on them. pete sell and luis ramos are probably the best examples of that.

Hey, why didn't UFC try and milk one last fight out of Kimbo Slice? Wouldn't feeding him to some debuting prospect have given the prospect a good start and also given a PPV a boost because Kimbo was still a name? UFC isn't shy about putting the entertainment aspect before the sporting aspect much of the time, it always seemed weird to me that they didn't cash in on his name one more time.

They did feed him to a (virtually) debuting prospect at UFC 113. When he lost horribly he got cut.

He won a gassed-out decision against another guy who wasn't ready for primetime, then gassed out and got outboxed and straight-up embarrassed against a guy coming out of TUF. I think that killed all the remaining interest in his "name" as the Internet's Bareknuckle Barbecue Boxing Champion.

I know he was super lovely, and I was at the Mitrione fight, but he was still a "name" (one of the first few that casual fans would name off the top of their heads) in MMA after that and had a 1-1 record in the UFC. I just think there was still money in him and I didn't read MMA message boards/news sites much at the time so I wasn't sure what the circumstances of his release were.

He was a novelty act. His rep was based on some Internet pop culture hubbub and some really dumb people being willing to believe a "street fighter" might beat pro fighters. Then he got a shot and lo and behold, he's an over-the-hill amateur athlete. When the mystique behind a novelty act is gone, you might be able to make some money off of one more lovely appearance, but it makes you look like a carny act. Keeping him around would've made the UFC look bad. Dana White doesn't want his business to look like pro wrestling. But aside from that, two fights is all it took for anyone to realize that there was nothing more to see there. Halloween Jack fucked around with this message at 21:09 on Sep 14, 2012 |

the sad part about Kimbo is that by all accounts he was enthusiastic about learning to grapple and is a decent guy. He might have been a good fighter if MMA was a big thing 10-15 years ago.

In terms of street fighters in MMA, is Krazy Horse the "best" of them? He's 26-27, mostly B-league fights against unknown fighters.

Alex Caceres is a street fight man and has won real UFC fights for real, so that's pretty good, even if he is kind of a goof. Plus he made Edwin Figueroa put on an impromptu fire safety class and that was funny.

The thing I hate is that Kimbo, much to my surprise, seemed like a really good dude on TUF. My dad watched to see Kimbo die and ended the season a fan of him. The reason he didn't do anymore MMA was that his knees weren't just bad, they were loving gone. Mitrione kicked him a few times and Kimbo looked like he was about to have a Corey Hill moment.

Quinton Jackson was marketed as a homeless thug (because he's black, see) when he debuted in Japan, but he was a junior college wrestler who would've gone into pro wrestling if he hadn't discovered MMA.

Halloween Jack posted:Fair 'nuff. It's just an odd question because there are a number of fighters who come from poor violent backgrounds--Tito Ortiz, for example. There have been a few guys marketed as "street fighters" based on the idea that they had no formal training and learned to fight in bars or whatever, like Tank Abbott. I don't think any of them enjoyed more success than Tank. Does Krazy Horse train with anybody? Tank wrestled for ten years and boxed amateur, as well.
