Can you lock the camera onto the character's back? I think the free camera gets almost too hectic than the classical standard; other than that, I cannot wait to play Mercenaries with this. No Mercy mode Capcom, come on.

Just reminding folks that the new public demo is out! It's got completely new sections than the Dragon's Dogma demo that have much more action- especially Leon's. I think they're the Gamescom demos, but not 100% sure. At the very minimum, the screen tearing present in the earlier demo isn't as prevalent here. edit: Leon's section is really long holy poo poo. I think these are all like the first 10-20 minutes of everyone's campaigns, minus their intros. Except Jake/Sherry's section. Sherry gets a ton of guns compared to Jake, holy moly! edit 2: Nevermind, I guess Jake gets 'em too! Also his melee attacks are slightly different from the ones in the old demo, I think Fereydun fucked around with this message at 18:14 on Sep 18, 2012 |

Since I'm working from home today I decided to dl the demo on 360. I got the demo from USA xbl. I have no clue how, but I did. It was on the marketplace and was 800 megs. Mind you, I am a massive fan of 4 and 5. I plucked down 60 hours of RE5 in a week, getting 1000/1000, and I've never played that game on co-op once. So I'm familiar with all the issues people have with that game. I'm getting this out of the way because I know many are split on RE5, many leaning towards "not liking it". With that out of the way, this demo is pretty bad. For starters, it lacks the exploration of RE4 and even 5, it's corridor after corridor. On the Leon section, that's not so bad, because there are A LOT of zombies - particularly one section in a tight rear end cramped hallway. But that doesn't change the fact that the game presented in the demo is pretty standard shootin' third person shooter. The demo never lets you alone to soak in the atmosphere, it's Hollywood thrill after thrill. Escape from a horde of zombies? RUNNNNN! Repeat. There's even an overly long - and just as silly - section where you fire up a car all with qte. It's like they took a look at RE4's qtes - one of the few games that does them right - and said,"let's do the opposite of that". Despite the fact the game is single player the whole way through the first time you play the game - no co-op option, it still feels co-op centric. On the Leon section, I never really felt alone and oppressed because his lady friend was with him. I got to one section and had to wait for about 15 seconds for her to reach me. But more than that, I'm not sure about the controls. It's the basic things, like...you can't kick doors open anymore, which in RE4/5 had strategic value. There's no more dedicated knife button, which means you have to actually switch to the knife, which makes using it a pain compared to RE4/5. Contextual qte's aren't as fun or satisfying as shooting a villager in the knee cap, running up, and planting his face on the ground. There's something off about the controls, and I can't explain why. They're more loose, and less tight compared 4 and 5. You can tell that the developers wanted to make the game feel as much as a shooter as possible; on that front, they were a success. The demo seems to suggest their direction of the series even further, for example - you can hold infinite items now too? There's no item limit? I mean, it's okay, but it didn't make me want to go through it multiple times like the RE5 demo. I'm not so sure about this game and after the demo, I may just wait for it to come to pc and wait for a Steam sale. What I got from the demo was an uninspired, generic, schizophrenic product that is pandering to a particular demographic. Does it want to be a horror game? Or a full on shooter? Or a high budget Hollywood Gaming fest? I don't know! Definitely not worthy of 60 dollars based on this demo unfortunately. Maybe most of these problems are because it's the demo, but I'm not quite sure, but after doing the Chris and Jake sections...whatever this game is, it's not Resident Evil. Len posted:Wait what? I have to finish the game before there's co-op? Or is this just a demo thing? This is completely wrong. The first time I played through every section was with co-op. Also, you can't hold infinite items. I actually filled my item bar on the Jake/Sherry chapter and couldn't pick up any herbs or grenades until I bothered combining or using the ones I had in my inventory. Though, inventory management really isn't a thing- just a 'whoops you can't have too many items at once' kinda deal. edit: also you can kick doors, it's even the same as RE4/5 with the double tap?? Really? I read you had to beat it once before you unlock co-op mode? My bad. So items inventory isn't infinite but it's not really a thing either? I played about half an hour of the Chris section, but I'm busy tonight so don't have time to give it a proper go. I agree with what Himuro is saying about the controls, they feel really loose compared to 4/5. The guns feel really imprecise, which is disappointing since the guns in 4/5 were (if you'll forgive the term) laser point accurate and packed a hell of a punch. Here they are kind of loose and unsatisfying. I do like it though, it's just going to take a lot of adjusting to. Hopefully once I'm settled into the feel of the game it will be better. Edit: How the gently caress do you use cover? Am I missing something obvious here?

Yeah, I never got much of RE4/5's punch playing the demo with either three characters. You know how in RE4 when Leon does a suplex is such a gratifying and satisfying experience? Or when you blow a villagers head off with your gun? I don't get any of this with this game's demo. Combat was one of the best things about RE4 and 5, and it's funny how despite being more action centric than either of those games put together, they still have far more functioning controls and sense of satisfaction than the entire hour I spent with 6's demo. I don't know how to cover either! Fereydun posted:edit: also you can kick doors, it's even the same as RE4/5 with the double tap?? You can? When I kick doors in RE4/5, I don't double tap, I slowly open it and then kick it. Just tried it again, and no, you can't kick open doors even if you double tap. It's context only- you can only take cover when that 'lil icon shows up when you get next to something you can take cover with. Fun fact: you can actually use the corpses of the guys who freeze up in the Jake/Sherry chapter as cover. Also you have to be aiming your weapon, if it's not obvious. I definitely agree that the combat isn't as satisfying, though. You can adjust the camera/gun controls to match up to how you feel, but the reaction from enemies is still rather underwhelming compared to the type of reactions you'd get from enemies in RE4/5. I'm assuming this is because there's going to be a huge amount of enemies somewhere, or that the variety of enemy types will somehow mitigate this (vs. the past two games having primarily humanoid enemies with all the same pattern and then a few exceptions). I'm guessing with the door kicking it might only be certain doors? I know for sure there are doors in Chris (in the DD demo) and Jake's sections that you can kick open. Looks like they're pseudo censoring the death animations again like in 5. Had a dude mount me and slit my throat but the camera snapped to an angle where he was perfectly positioned between the camera and the action. Always found it a bit odd how 5 shied away from the money shots where 4 was all about showing the brutal and over the top deaths.

Lasher posted:Always found it a bit odd how 5 shied away from the money shots where 4 was all about showing the brutal and over the top deaths. The reason for this is pretty simple. There were two versions of RE4. In certain places (such as Japan) it was censored. In RE5 (and I assume RE6), the game is built around online multiplayer. It was pretty easy to hop into a game with a Japanese player in RE5, and so they had one version for everyone instead of a censored and uncensored version.
