You pretty much said it. Primer is really in a league of it's own, and Lynch films are also comparable if only because he deliberately throws you off with red herrings or strange dream logic.

I can't think of anything else that won't be painfully obvious, or that doesn't really fit because by the end it usually spells out to you exactly what the answer to the puzzle was. Two off-kilter choices are Pi and Christopher Smith's Triangle. The latter seems to have mixed opinions as if you like it or even think it's as complicated as it thinks it is, but as the director has stated that he wrote it so that it can have three different and perfectly valid interpretations (aand that any claims of plot holes he has seen so far are people who misinterpreted the events. You can therefore see a lot of similar discussion to Primer online of people making timelines and finding visual clues based on their "theory".

I was watching the titular Primer last night and it got me thinking, are there many other movies like it? Very uncompromising and intentionally vague/difficult to follow? I know plenty of films end up like this through a combination of poor direction, scripting and editing, but Primer uses its impenetrability as a strength and is a really good movie because of that.

Obviously Lynch is the first name that jumps to mind. Nearly everything he has done has been dream-logic, strange, complex and multilayered. That was pretty much all I could come up with though.

Depends how free with genre you're willing to be. While not science-y, The Holy Mountain is pretty drat impenetrable, though it helps to have a bit of knowledge of the practice of alchemy and general Christian info.

e: maybe Irreversible? It's not so much hard to follow (though it is at first) as it is constantly reassembling what you know.
e2: and if I'm going to mention Irreversible, then it stands to reason I should include Enter the Void

The ultimate puzzle disguised as a film is probably Last Year at Marienbad. Also in addition to what's been mentioned, you might give Mamet's films a try, they aren't puzzling in the same sense as other suggestions, but at least when I'm watching them I find myself continually re-evaluating what I know about the characters.

Thanks for all the suggestions. With the exception of one or two I've actually seen all of them but hadn't quite realized they're all quite Puzzle-y. Timecrimes is probably the closest thing to Primer I can think of. Have a few new movies to check out anyway, thanks guys.

I need comedies, good ones, they can be dumb when it comes to the actual story, dark, dark and intellectual, horror comedy, whatever. As long as actual laughter is guaranteed and that they're good for watching with friends. Anything from Blades of Glory, Wag the Dog, to Night of the Creeps.

Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil
Interstate 60
Stardust

More adventure than comedy, but has some great laughs. Robert DeNiro as a cross-dressing pirate. 'Nuff said.
Princess Bride
World's Greatest Dad
Retard-O-Tron 2000

You may want to screen this alone first. Not a movie as such, but a collection of B-movie clips, Japanese TV shows, Motocross/skateboarding vids, hosed up porn and other odds and ends. I personally found it to be laugh-till-you-cry funny but I have a 12 year old's sense of humor.
Casa de mi Padre
Scott Pilgrim
Youth in Revolt

Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil - seen it twice, love it
Interstate 60 - haven't seen it
Stardust - saw it at the cinema
Princess Bride - haven't seen it, people keep bringing it up, will see it
World's Greatest Dad - seen it, good movie
Retard-O-Tron 2000 - this actually sounds perfect
Casa de mi Padre - seen it, awesome
Scott Pilgrim - seen it, hate it immensely, and I'm a comic book nerd
Youth in Revolt - tried to watch it, gave up after 20 minutes

Lost in America with Albert Brooks is a critically acclaimed and really funny comedy. A must-see, often cited as one of the best films (not just comedy) of the 80s. I'd also recommend The Big Chill.

Heathers
Airplane

School of Rock
Being John Malkovich
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
The Gold Rush
The Producers (1968)
Big Trouble in Little China
Black Dynamite
Young Frankenstein
Grosse Pointe Blank
Duck Soup
OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies
OSS 117: Lost in Rio
Back to the Future
Ghostbusters
The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad
Attack the Block
Beetlejuice
Flirting with Disaster

One, Two, Three
Blazing Saddles
Four Lions
Rush Hour
Rush Hour 2
12:08 East of Bucharest
Beverly Hills Cop
The Odd Couple

The Blues Brothers

The Trip
Death at a Funeral (2007)

And so on. I should probably cut this off before I just list every movie.

Okay, thanks, but here's the deal - among other 'creative professional' type jobs, I work as a pop culture journalist (in Croatia, currently) so I watch a lot of movies, I've seen a lot of movies, I write about movies weekly, I've been buying movie magazines since I was about ten years old, I've taken film history at college... That's a long list and I've seen pretty much every title. For some reason, The Princess Bride is almost unknown over here, that's why I didn't see it as a kid, even though I've seen it pop up online everywhere. I was asking for comedies because they're always underrated, and sometimes the good ones go unnoticed.

Example of an outstanding comedy: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

I watched Lost in America back in the day, it's been years, so I'll give that one another go.

If you get decent internet in Croatia then download Retard-O-Tron, and the sequel to Retard-O-Tron, right here!

NB it should be reiterated that these aren't actually comedy films; they're video mixtapes of stuff that's mostly too pornographic or gruesome or lovely to go on youtube. I advise watching them while drinking heavily with your rowdiest gang of friends.

Can you guys provide me with some suggestions of really loving Halloweeny movies? I'm not into gore or jump scares, so I'm not looking for things like John Carpenter's Halloween... with me, it's more of a production design thing: I want neighborhoods completely decked out in Halloween trimmings and kids out wandering the streets looking for candy.

Basically I'm looking for movies similar these:
Hocus Pocus
Trick 'r Treat (gore notwithstanding, set design is through the roof)
Costume Quest
The Adventures of Pete and Pete - "Halloweenie"
Freaks and Geeks - "Tricks and Treats"

(side note: from the look of it, I don't think I'd like the Halloweentown films)

Some reccomendations for darker, grittier horror movies (Like the remake of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, also TCM:TB, [REC], things like that, would be much appreciated. The gorier the better, though I'd prefer to stay away from some of the demon/possession stuff. Thanks!
