Life, friends, is boring
He talks about "thug life" because he never finished high school and used to be petty criminal who had to live in the Netherlands for a while before he could return to Germany. Now he talks about walking around with a gun under his pullover (yeah, right), and stabbing you in the face with a knife. He also talks about your inability to gently caress your girlfriend because you can't find her hole or something like that.

I think it's rubbish, but I know that a lot of teenagers love it.

edit: I'm talking about that German guy Haftbefehl

Hah, a lot of this is awfully accurate. As said, just out of curiosity.

While most of his music is indeed rubbish, and catered to appeal to teens or "criminals", he is pretty uniqe in his style and pronunciation. His first album was good, after that he tried to go mainstream and flopped.

Our gangster rap market is so over saturated that you literally can take a bunch of their parts, mix em in a hat, and let them pull one out. What I'm saying is that they all sound exactly alike. Aside from being weak, a lot of them pay the same ghostwriters.

And those Thug Life clothes are embarrassing to wear after you turn 16. They make a lot of money though.

John Brown posted:

I think there's too huge of a cultural difference for most of us to adequately judge this. I do notice that I don't see many blacks in the gangsta rap vids I've seen from places like Germany and Australia.

Also, if you're so street why not shoot a video in the hood like LEP. The German Times Square throws off the mood.
Most of the ethnic people round here are Arabic, and they usually have a crazy good sense for banging beats and percussions.

Also don't get it twisted, that area is the red light distric of Frankfurt. They just filmed at the fancy places and left the heroin alleys out of the picture. But I get what you mean.

Aside from the language barrier my biggest problem with foreign rap is that I automatically doubt the credibility of the rapper. Since we're on a Kendrick lamar kick right now no one is going to doubt what he's saying being from where he is. And being an American I know the reputation Compton has. I know there are rough places all over the world but your average Grime artist could just be fabricated guy talking about guns since I can't relate to whatever mean streets they're claiming to come from.

Well it's all poo poo, is that a better explanation? Every time someone posts some "hey check out this Japanese mc he totally kills ever bar" it's the most god-awful poo poo ever. Even aside from that I'm not the only person in this thread who appreciates authenticity in their rap music. If Gucci had Drake's background he'd be mocked mercilessly, hth.

Oh yeah, authenticity is important. I mostly listen to stuff that I can relate to, and if I can't, I sure want the person telling me about it to not be an actor.

On the other hand, I'm not going to google the background of some guy that I happen to like a couple of songs from. If it's banging than it just is. But if I knew that it was made up bullshit, I just couldn't feel it anymore.

I don't think anyone is denying the allure of someone rapping about hard street poo poo who you also know has hard street credentials. But on the other hand, I don't enjoy Drake, Rick Ross, Jadakiss, and the like any less because of their real life histories. Shrug. I have actual skeletons in my closet
601 and Snort is a typical mixtape. You shouldn't expect much even though cats go all out on mixtapes these days. Its better to call other mixtapes free albums than mixtapes.

Drake is wack but not generally wack, just wack material. He makes the best clubbing, young arrogance, loving bad chicks type of songs. I can't think anyone doing better. His album OTOH is going for the Ja Rule/LL COOL J spot of fake singing and begging women. I wish he would get serious and make R&B ala 808 and Heartbreaks instead of tiptoeing around it. I think that album has been more influential than people give it credit for.

I hate that Mr. MF eXquire dropped around the same time GKMC. X is pretty good too. He's probably what people wanted from Kendrick aka NY poo poo.

Man, this thread has been reaching all-time lows recently. I'm sure it's that clown bstyle's fault somehow.

All foreign rap is pure poo poo. If it's not from the US or Canada, it's garbage. Hell, even in the UK whenever they try to go away from grime to more rap-type poo poo it sounds like trash.

Also Gunplay is the truth and if you don't think so you're objectively wrong.

I was referring to this interview I read a long rear end time ago on Jada from when he had just gotten hot in the early 2000s. He was talking about how he exaggerates in his music: especially about violence and killing. Anyway I just tried to dig it up but i couldnt find poo poo so its either been scrubbed really thoroughly from the internet or I was thinkin of some other rapper. I know Jada has a few lil weed charges and a gun charge on his record so whatever I guess that makes him thug... Not really though cause many fools these days, rap game or otherwise, have that type of sheet.

Thanks Bob, your low-content post has added so much to this lively discussion!

To the dude who was asking about french rap, there seems to be two or three major types I can identify in french rap: people influenced by dj premier, people influenced by a tribe called quest, and people influenced by coke rap. There's a lot of really interesting production by people like Dela, DJ Prophet, and DJ Stresh that relies heavily on Roy Ayers samples and other jazz samples. If you like that kind of production, you should check out Hocus Pocus (they're a full band, but they have a 'lead' rapper and collaborate with Jazz Liberatorz, who I'd also recommend)

Hocus Pocus - Voyage Immobile https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1NF32wwMTI
Hocus Pocus - Vocab https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urE5E6W2aN8

Jazz Liberatorz perform mostly in english since they have a lot of people who do guest spots on their albums.

Jazz Liberatorz - Ease My Mind (ft Tre Hardson, Fat Lip, Omni) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CT1Ag3s6EFg

I can't remember all of the artists off the top of my head, but this is a pretty popular crossover song
