Give me a few hours and I'll put them up on my poster store which can be found at http://www.planebrilliance.com if any of you want to buy Air Koryo posters. They'll even be level and properly sharpened. I've just been getting over some food poisoning from the last bit of dog I ate in FNJ or I'd have already done it.

Also, I am afraid next post will only make you want to go more. I might just make a passworded gallery on my smugmug for the stuff that I don't want the internet writ large to see- then share the password through spoiler tags.

Here is the next part, actually:
Air Awesome-yo I

Two hours with P-912

Ever wanted to fly on an IL-76-TD? Especially a newish one from 1992! Of course you have. You’d even go to DPRK to do it, wouldn’t you?
Well, thankfully I did- so you don’t EVER have to go

This is what it must have felt like to be a conscript in a Western Oblast in 1982. See that little duct on the landing gear pod? That’s the air intake for the APU. It is properly loud, too. Roughly 110dB.

What is there to say about a transport aircraft with only 20 seatbelts (for 40 pax), four windows, and four Soloviev engines? In the immortal words of Drake,

“Skeet, Skeet, Skeet: Watergun”

Words cannot describe how amazing it is and if you tune in a little later, I should have a movie ready of its takeoff back to FNJ.

Here’s more IL-76 porn, but before I forget. The awesome thing about the ’76 is that it takes off like a helicopter. Nose down attitude, but just powers up into the air. You don’t even really notice you are flying until you hear the gear slam up.

Oh I forgot part of the story. We bought 15,000lbs of rice for the people of Sondok/Hamhung (Songun though, so we probably bought 15,000lbs of rice for the soldiers of the area without knowing it) and flew it aboard the plane. Whomever ate it, they probably really needed it.

The Future

Now, as much as we wish fear wonder if these planes are going to stick around forever, the answer is probably… YES!

Air Koryo has publicly said over the year that they want to get new planes and have plans to do x, y, and z- all of which I will go through, but there are infinitely many problems facing them.

Firstly, North Korea brings new meanings to the word destitute. No one has any money. Hell, the country only burns 16,000 barrels of oil per day. Not even Russia is willing to just throw them planes any more. This financial shortage also contributes to very low flying hours for the crew. How low? Well, 25 hours a month- at the very most. That figure was only for the radio operator as well (who does not actually fly, just talks) and that is because he is on all the flights to PEK. Some digging indicates that most Air Koryo pilots probably do about 10-15 hours. That’s still more flying than the average PKAF pilot, but the PKAF pilot isn’t carrying hapless tourists.

Unfortunately that lack of flying and lack of basic things like accredited simulators means that they will be spending a good deal longer on Europe’s most insulting aviation document.

Said blacklist is actually another very large problem for them. While, officially, the Tu-204s are not blacklisted- it’s more of a de facto removal than anything else. The Tu-204s are very well kept, yes- but there are a lot of strong conditions on their operation that I am positive JS is not meeting. Furthermore, how could an airline like JS make even a one-stop route to Europe work when their service is so bad even Skytrax gives them one star? Their yields would collapse and ground handlers would impound the plane with debts in whatever port they chose by the end of that month.

Another problem they neglect to address is, how the hell do you send someone from North Korea to somewhere less repressive and more accepting of asylum seekers than China? Even if you put an armed officer on board to act as a nursemaid to stop defection; nothing’s stopping him from making a run for it with the rest of the crew. Okay, okay, families being killed etc. Only children are set, though!

Let’s also remember that even dangerously polluted China wants to ban IL-62 operations into its country by the end of this year. JS says this deadline has shifted, but JS has no idea.

FNJ's ramp and MX area by Powercube, on Flickr
Cubana even gave them the IL-62M parked far at the back to either fly or use for spares. It seems that JS is not sure what to use it for either, though I hear its avionics are in the best shape of any of the fleet.

So, with the truth in mind; what does JS say they have planned?

P-835 under repair at FNJ by Powercube, on Flickr
Staying until 2022 at the earliest!

The Tu-204s, they want more of them? The Air Koryo man said they would be happy with a few more -300s. He then said 100s, then 214s.

Widebodies?
Well, Wiki alleges an order for three IL-96s to arrive in 2017. That was the first they’d heard of it, too. They’d love to fly nonstop to a destination in Western or Eastern Europe, but that’s a big regulatory and logistical hurdle to cross. If they ever do get 96s, I imagine them to be used on the high demand China-FNJ routes. The amount of Chinese tourism of North Korea is only expanding (Though I have no idea why).

Sukhoi SSJ? Too expensive, keep dreaming.

AN-140? Maybe Iran will give them some HESA copies for free in the future.

What animals? That'd imply that they were not already all eaten. You barely even see any birds in DPRK. About the only animal you ever actually do see other than work oxen are very terrified pigeons.

Also, regarding the 154 on fire photo. I love that one! BUt I didn't take it! It's a shame all my safety violations involved oxygen or things hard to illustrate on video.

Fun fact: The Harrier uses water injection in the engine to produce more thrust for hovering. It carries 60 gallons of distilled water, which is used up in approximately 90 seconds.

Water is a great thing to get a little extra power out of heat cycle engines. Not many things take advantage of it. Water injection adds power and also cools the engine. There isn't much of a downside that I know of other than having to carry around an inert fuel.

I was pretty sure that it's there just to provide cooling that the engines otherwise get from air flow in normal flight.

It's both. Jet engines are mostly limited by turbine inlet temps. Water injection lets you burn a LOT more fuel, thereby making more power. As a byproduct, it also does the whole steam thing, which also produces huge benefits in power.

Basically, this is correct. Water injection lowers temperatures inside the engine (which are the main limiting factor in turbine engines) through phase change, as well as providing a slight boost to mass flow and internal pressure.

In the case of the Harrier, water injection allows the engine to produce an additional 1200-1400 pounds of thrust (about a 5 percent increase) for that 90 second window.

I read this too. Water lets the engine burn more fuel by using the extra heat energy to evaporate into steam (which provides extr thrust) instead of to damage the engine parts (which destroys the engine).

When you throw in afterburners, those numbers get even more absurd.

On takeoff, the fuel burn for an F-16 is somewhere in the neighborhood of 36,000lbs (~5,300 gallons) per hour, in an aircraft that carries about 12,000lbs of fuel with two external tanks fitted. For a B-1, the takeoff fuel burn can reach 250,000lbs (just under 37,000 gallons) with all four engines in full afterburner.
