Yeah, Madness reformed in 1992. They even performed in the closing ceremony at the Olympics this year. I don't know how much this applies to all their new stuff, but their 2009 album, the Liberty of Norton Folgate, has a pretty different style One Step Beyond or any of the early releases. I still really like what they're doing though. Here, have a song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LRWq5kXmV4&feature=related Still silly as ever. Ugh. I have a bunch of cds I just found that are super scratched but there's some classics and awesome old bands but I can't find them anywhere on the internet. In the stack besides all the big bands I found The Taxis Mephiskapheles Interrobang!? New York Ska Jazz Ensemble Skanic The Allstonians Skastori (Italy) Yum Yum! Orange (Japan) Kemuri (Japan) Dallax (Japan) Ska-P (Spain?) none of them really play in the cd players I tried. I used to be really, really heavy into Japanese ska and here's some I don't see mentioned a lot. Gelugugu: Named after a Gundam mecha (Geloog). Seriously. More times than not they're taking cues directly from Voodoo Glow Skulls playbook, but this is one of their songs that's a bit more pop-oriented. I always dug their ridiculous engrish and how the vocalist sounds like he plows through cartons of cigarettes every day. I think they're still around in some form. Link: Beileve - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbISIZVmphE ARTS: A two-tone oriented ska group. Reminds me a bit of Tokyo Ska Para before their leader/hype-man was injured in a car crash back in the late 90's and forced to sit on a stool at shows and occasionally play alto sax, strum a guitar or bark into the mic. They're still around, apparently. Link: Honey Dance - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0jLztz5qPk SKA SKA CLUB: This was essentially Japan's Streetlight Manifesto. I followed them closely and felt that they were so close to re-energizing ska in the mainstream what with old guards like Potshot and Kemuri on their way out, but ultimately the size of their band (12 members!!) and the day jobs of each individual member kept them from touring heavily behind their first (and only) album and they went on a permanent hiatus. Eventually Grover Yoshikazu, the Bradley Nowell-sounding, half-Japanese vocalist went on to form an okay-sounding band called Jackson Vibe that had nothing to do with ska. A sad story but hey, at least they didn't get the chance to end up like Reel Big Fish. Link: Heart Break Cafe - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goUjF1oHLWY Young Punch: Cool ska punk band without horns. Moved further and further away from ska punk as time went on in a fashion similar to Rx Bandits, ending up with an interesting fusion between live instrumentation and pre-programmed electronica click tracks before disbanding in 2002. Their original guitarist Chin Nakamura left before their second album and later ended up in punk band Ging Nang Boyz, whose songs have been covered by Jeff Rosenstock of Bomb The Music Industry and Asian Man Records band "Shinobu". Link: Nothing Goes Right - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thb-lr8vEL0 Duck Missile: Kind of a cross between Op Ivy and Assorted Jelly Beans. Came around in the mid to late 90's, disbanded before the aughts and recently reformed in '09 to do a couple reunion shows. Nothing mind-blowing and they didn't even make a huge impact on their native scene but I always dug their energy and the bassist's lines. RBF just posted this on Facebook. Unsure if any of you are interested in this. I'd probably go if I lived anywhere near CA. "CASTING CALL! We are casting ska dancers and extras for a REEL BIG FISH music video shooting on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, near Riverside, CA. If you like the band and you like skanking, come out and join us! We want people who are willing to dance and take part for at least five hours, but filming could go longer so you must be willing to stay for the entire shoot. You MUST be 18 or older to participate. Everyone's ID will be checked at the door so please remember to bring yours! There is no pay, but we will provide you with snacks, water and of course, great music. Come meet the band and hang out. Once we get your information and finalize our cast, we will send you more details about the shoot. Please do not show up if are not invited - anyone who does will be removed from the premises. Please send your name, phone number and a photo (in ska clothes if possible Recommended: black-and-white checkers, neon colors, Hawaiian shirts. Accessories are highly encouraged! Fedoras, porkpie hats, sunglasses) to: rbfvideo@yahoo.com. We hope to see you there!"

Now that I've had a chance to go back through the Best of Us For the Rest of Us super deluxe mega ultra version.... some of the skacoustic versions aren't bad after all. Actually I think I like the acoustic versions of '241' and 'Good Thing' more than the originals. A lot of those re-recordings though are really sloppy as poo poo and not great to listen to.

Yeah but I also hate the over-distorted horn sound that RBF likes so much so I will always find Why Do They Rock So Hard to be the best album, mix-wise. I know it's a tower of power thing but not having reverb on the horns really grinds my ears. WDTRSH, Cheer Up, and We're Not Happy all put reverb on em and it sounds way better to me than Monkey For Nothing, Candy Coated Fury, or Turn the Radio Off. Best of Us keeps the reverb off too and way overdrives them so. Not a huge fan. The 7th Guest fucked around with this message at 22:06 on Nov 2, 2012 |

OreSkaBand is one of the few bands available. Yum!Yum!Orange only has one song on there. Skapara is missing. Pistol Valve is missing. Kemuri is missing. The only band I've discovered on Spotify is Dad Mom God, which is basically the frontman of Tokyo Ska Paradise starting his own side band, which is literally just Tokyo Ska Paradise again, and they even cover Lupin III and All or Nothing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-qRsNAkGNs The 7th Guest fucked around with this message at 01:44 on Nov 3, 2012 |

That's the thing. In the Ska-P video I posted as well there's like a good arena-sized crowd. I don't think I've ever seen a ska band in a non-Warped Tour context with that many goddamn people. Well. Maybe the Bosstones at the Hometown Throwdown but even still, some of the videos I've seen of TSPO have them playing to Madison Square Garden sized crowds.
|
# ? Nov 3, 2012 04:13 |

I think TSPO gets that kind of crowd because they're just considered pop in Japan. They've performed (and recorded) with Puffy AmiYumi and other headline acts. I hope that One Piece/Toriko movie gets localized in America someday, because it means we'd actually get a Tokyo Ska album released in the US, since they did the soundtrack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6cluqutgDs

All those J-ska bands, that makes me so happy. All I had before was Orekaband, Yum Yum! Orange, and TSPO. Everything I saw in the Gelugugu videos is basically a combination of all the ridiculous things I love about third wave ska. Spotify also doesn't have poo poo on Russian ska apparently. That or it doesn't think Russkaja is a ska band, not sure which one.

Not quite ska but with having a sound most akin to rocksteady, in the same ballpark. Baby Blue - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnYTo6OYNn0 More of a madchester-esque britpop/dub number but this is another cool FISHMANS tune. Weather Report - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVA7_gxXegA Like most Japanese ska bands FISHMANS became more progressive as they went on. They're still hugely influential in Japan today for this more experimental work and perhaps because the singer shot himself, or od'ed. I honestly forget which. He's dead though and the Japanese people seriously revere those who have died. Grandmaster.flv posted:Can we be bros because seriously. The Aggrolites got me into revivalist ska. I had never heard of them until I saw them open for the Dropkick Murphys a million years in the past. During their Aggrolites' set, in the mother of all "hardcore guy doesn't get it" moments, I had my left knee dislocated and my leg below the knee hyper extended. I spent the rest of the show at the back of the crowd on a stool with an ice pack on my leg. Kind of sucked since the Dropkick's were my favorite band at the time. Apparently word traveled fast around that small venue though, because before the Dropkicks went on stage I got a personal visit from Ken Casey to make sure I was alright.
