I agree about the treatment, though I prefer these pictures:

Unemployed Danish syndicalists, inspired by the revolutions in Russia and Germany. Their revolution was unsuccessful, as I assume you could figure out, but they did manage to storm the stock exchange and beat people up with clubs, so wasn't a complete waste of effort.

The Social Democrats of course urged that the unions should „not be the playground of irresponsible people in the pursuit of purposeless and harmful experiments".

What's that? Someone's waving a red banner? Better call in the police!

First Danish police car.

That's the great thing about the police, you always know which side they're going to be on.

To make this post fair and balanced, I will of course also post some pictures of their right-leaning counterparts.

While Americans on the East Coast struggle to recover from onetime Hurricane Sandy, stretches of Asia have been battered by a typhoon that has cost more than 30 lives since it first struck last week.

In China, one person was reported dead, five were still missing and roughly 126,000 had been relocated in Hainan province due to Typhoon Son-Tinh, state media reported Monday. Powerful floods have reportedly destroyed hundreds of homes across the area. In the southern region of Guangxi Zhuang, scores of boats on a river bordering China and Vietnam went missing during the downpour.

In Vietnam, the storm had already claimed at least three lives and injured 29 people before moving on to China, the Vietnamese national news agency reported. Homes and bridges were destroyed, fields of crops ruined and electrical and telephone lines downed, the agency said. More than 86,000 people were evacuated to avoid the storm, while national authorities distributed hundreds of life vests and thousands of water purification tablets, a United Nations coordinator in Vietnam reported.

Before wreaking havoc in Vietnam and China, the typhoon had lashed the Philippines, killing at least 27 people, injuring 19 and leaving nine missing, its national disaster agency reported Tuesday, updating its earlier, lower death tolls. More than 109,000 Filipinos were affected by the storm as it hit the Philippines last week, where it was known as Ofel.

The tempest has weakened, but its damages in the three countries have been estimated in the tens of millions of dollars. In the Vietnamese province of Nam Dinh alone, local media estimated the damages ran as high as $45 million, with farms swamped and electricity damaged, the U.N. reported.

I used to live next to the 'e' in Tottenville.

Note that in this map, from 1639, the water levels everywhere seem elevated, with a thinner Statem Island and a visibly large river across the Bay in what is now called cliff wood. Elsewhere on the map, in Manhattan, and Brooklyn, water levels also seem higher than one would expect, and then is generally seen on later maps.

I'm flattered. ;) I very much doubt we know each other though, I have not been politically active for very long at all, and I'm not aware of anyone in my social circle that's particularly politically active either. I just thought those images, and the story surrounding them is pretty interesting. It's a nice counter-message to the Social Democrat's message of everything good in Denmark being their doing. Doubt they would have gotten half the things they wanted if there hadn't been "extremists" to scare the right with.

Hell, I hadn't even really heard about this before. Sure, I might have heard a mention of the storming of the stock exchange, but that's really it. An aborted socialist revolution at the same time as the Russian one, and it's pretty much ignored when talking about Danish history? Well, admittedly, my history education was pretty lovely for anything that was not the viking age, so leaving that out as well is not really surprising.

Yeah, I can see what's he's talking about. Need quite a lot of officers if you want to match protesters in sheer numbers.

In case you haven't been following it, there's been a bit of a minor kerfuffle over Nate Silver's election projections, for no real reason. Some pundits (read, Joe Scarborough) have claimed that trying to assign any sort of probability to any outcome is impossible because this election is a true tossup.

An aborted socialist revolution at the same time as the Russian one

These were commonplace toward the end of/just after World War I.

The Spartacist Movement in Germany during the German Revolution post-WW1 was an abortive far-left revolution that helped contribute greatly to both the early weakening of the Weimar state (specifically the people's confidence in it) and provided for early mainstream support of reactionary parties and paramilitary organizations (like the Freikorps).

A propaganda poster for the Communist Party (KPD) and the Spartakusbund during the German Revolution of 1918/19. Translated: "What does Spartacus want?" The snake's three heads are labelled "new militarism," "capitalism," and "junkerdom" (Junkers were a class of arch-conservative Prussian aristocrats):

Another propaganda poster (with edges torn off) saying simply "VOTE SPARTACUS." The building at the base of the flagpole there is the Reichstag:

This one is a reactionary poster against the Bavarian wing of the Spartacist movement (and it helps that the dude has a really great butt...). It reads, "Christian people! Should Spartakus be allowed to tear down your churches? Give your answer on election day! BAVARIAN VOLKSPARTEI.":

And speaking of Bavaria, there was also an independent Bavarian Soviet Republic that lasted for about a month in 1919. I would post an image of the flag, but it's just a boring solid crimson rectangle.

Weimar German history and the history of socialist revolution are fascinating as all hell.

Have some German left-wing marching songs from the time period (:swoon: over old socialist anthems).

-Roter Wedding (Red Wedding, the historical communist stronghold borough of Berlin, not the English word)
-Die Internationale (German version of The Internationale)
-Arbetlose Marsch (March of the Unemployed, it's in Yiddish!)
-Lied der Internationalen Brigaden (Song of the International Brigades, march for the couple thousand German socialists/communists/anarchists who volunteered to fight on the side of Republican Spain during the Spanish Civil War).
-Die Arbeiter von Wien (The Workers of Vienna, an Austrian socialist anthem).
-Einheitsfrontlied (Song of the United Front, text written by the one and only Bertolt Brecht).

And what the hell, here's an American socialist anthem too from the time, sung by a famous communist!

-Joe Hill as sung by Paul Robeson

Hm, I've been out to where this guy is buried and never heard of him.

I will say though, everything you need to know about the "heritage not hate" neo-confederates can be neatly summed up in the fact that they see it fit to memorialize the guy.

If you ever read the book "Confederates in The Attic" there is a scene where they have a memorial for Henry Wirz as the poor innocent scapegoat. They invited a representative of the Swiss embassy (Wirz was Swiss) who I don't think really knew what he was in for.
