I put 16GB in mine for around £60, not sure on your prices where you are.

I have a couple of questions one battery related and one VM related:

In terms of battery performance is it better to shut down rather than just close the lid? I am not talking about for a few hours, more like today were I have been at work all day and don't need to use it.

I have my old laptop which is has Windows 8 on it (I am thinking about trying Ubuntu properly) and the aim of this is so I can connect it up the TV which is easy but I also want to host VM's on this machine as it's got a big hard disk. I am thinking I can leave the VM's running in Hyper-V or Virtualbox and remotely connect to them on the Mac. I have tried Cord and this connects fine to the Windows 8 machine but it is really flakey connecting to a VM within that box. I am maybe thinking of taking advantage of the SSD and getting a VM installed on Virtualbox. Has anyone got any suggestions for a decent RDP client?

I am not aiming to use Windows on a day to day basis but I am working towards Microsoft certification so I would like to be able to launch a couple of server VM's.

I think when it sleeps, the MacBook Pro uses like 1% of the battery every hour or two? The Air has a special sleep mode and can live with the lid closed for 30 days but the Pro doesn't work that way. Either way I just close the lid-even though I can reboot and have all my browser tabs etc open in 30 seconds with an SSD. I only power down when I'm doing an update that requires it.

I use CoRD, sometimes almost all day. But I connect to a server in a datacenter, not a VM on my machine. The first thing I would check is how you have the networking setup in your VM software. Bridged, NAT, etc. I've had problems with virtual machines getting a new DHCP address and losing connection with them (when using them as web/db servers).

There's a microsoft-branded RDP client if you really want to go that route.

Am I correct in thinking that the only way to get 16Gb of ram in a portable Mac is in the 15" MBP with Retina display?

I need a new machine for work and I think my choices are a 13" Air or 13" MBP both with 8Gb or a 15" MBP with 16Gb, and I suspect the 15" is actually the retina model...

Yup only the Retina Pro line has that option and you have to stick with the more expensive Retina models if you want a slimmer, lighter version of the MBP concept.

And the Retina 15" is the best deal overall since the old MBP doesn't present a big price savings unless you remove good features for a work computer such as the pre-installed SSD.

It's strange. All my choices have an SSD. The two 13" options both have a 128 SSDand 8Gb ram. The 15" says nothing about being retina or lacking the optical drive but since it has 16Gb of memory and the 256 SSD I figure it has to be the retina. Given the choice the 15" seems like a no brainier.

With my luck the 15" is really last years model...

I'm thinking about selling my MBP and picking up a new 13" MBA. I don't do much with my MBP at the moment: just programming, watching movies, Photoshop/Lightroom, and occasionally gaming (Diablo 3, WoW, Skyrim w/ Bootcamp). Is the Air powerful enough for me? Should I also upgrade to the i7 and how does this effect battery life? Are the RAM and/or SSD user–upgradable or are they also soldered on?

e: Never mind, this was mostly all answered one page back.

It seems the RAM is soldered, is the SSD also soldered?

(One more question and this is more speculation, but are/have there been any rumors about a Retina upgrade for the MBA?)

I'm guessing the 13" and 15" MBPs should be able to be upgraded to 16GB since the Mac mini could last year. The official spec was up to 8GB but it can take 16GB fine (albeit that may have been after a firmware update).

I don't see how this matters at all. The people who are going to upgrade are going to upgrade, and the people looking for a 13" rMBP have a choice between it and the new 13" rMBA. At the end of a day the still sold a MacBook.

You can save $1,000 and get a regular 15" Pro and spend $75 for 16GB of RAM.

The 13" rMBP is basically an Air...with a retina screen. Judging by how the iPad 3 got thicker and lost battery life when they added the Retina screen, if they kept the 13" Air the same size but added the Retina display you'd see 3 hours of battery life.

In some ways it is (it’s a lot smaller compared to the old MBP), in some ways it isn’t (the weight difference is still there while traveling and it’s not wedged to be almost flush with the desk like the MBA is).

To me the 13" rMBP would be a very desirable machine if it had a GPU in the 650m range, but now that Intel is focused on closing the inegrated GPU performance gap with every iteration, I don’t think we'll ever see dedicated GPUs in the 13" anytime soon.

It’s quite absurd that right now the MBA offers a noticeably more fluid and snappy™ user experience than the flagship rMBP.

As for rMBA speculation, we’ll probably see IGZO screens appear in products next year.
The improvements in power consumption pave the way for a rMBA. I would also expect the rMBA battery life improve to at least 8-9 hours then.

Although thinking about it, the iPad mini is probably going to be the first one to get the IGZO update.

Just getting used to how Finder works. Yeah search is awesome from the magnifying glass up there.

Associating certain files to work with an app, like getting mp4/mov files to open with VLC instead of Quicktime. Launchpad app not alphabetizing the icons. Right click a file/folder in finder to see how much space is used. Delete on the keyboard NOT deleting when highlighting a file, have to use command+delete. Red X button not always actually closing an app, having to CMD+Q to quit. Little stuff like that all hitting me at once.

Edit=The CMD+I is a bit easier to work with than a different method I found.

Also forgot the biggest headache, not being able to see all the folders I shared on my Windows 7 machine. I can do the CMD+K to do SMB://Win7IpAddress and it shows the folders I have shared and asking what I want to mount, get an error on somethat they cant be found, which is puzzling, if they cant be found, why are they populating? I never setup a user account with a password on my home desktop as it never travels, just turn on the PC and get to the desktop, Im wondering if setting up a user account would fix that.

If you haven't found the answer by now, select a particular file type (like an .mp4), hit Cmd+i for the info inspector, under "Open with", choose VLC, then hit "Change All...". You may have to hit the padlock on the bottom first.

The internal pricing for the 15" MBP is nearly double the 13" MBP. I think the only way that happens is if they custom order the 15 as a retina with the 16Gb of memory. IT is certainly capable of upgrading but I think we just order the specs from the factory.

Given the discussion in this thread, it seems really silly that we offer the stripper 13" MBP and the comparable 13" air. Then the jump from the base MBP to the retina 15 is pretty wide. We have really good IT where I work but the end user equipment choices are just strange (on the PC side you can get a dell mobility 13" or a 17" desktop replacement "portable" boat anchor).

Anyone here get their 27" iMac yet? I think I am still two weeks from getting mine, and my early 2008 iMac is ready to make an exit. Through a window.

In fact, I bet you can buy AppleCare for an AppleTV (only $29), and just not buy the AppleTV. I bet you anything that your AEBS would be covered still.

After the recommendations here and reading the reviews I took a dive and went with the 15in rMBP. Right now I feel intense regret - of putting up with a lovely lenovo x220 for so long :cripes:

I originally looked at the retina macbook because it was reviewed to have better temperature profile and horsepower than most other thin-ish laptops, but the conversion to Mac OS has also been much more positive than I expected. The vastly superior touchpad, notification center, imessage-integration and the screen have pretty much spoiled me instantly. The battery life is hilariously good too if I stick to basic use or even watching youtube/hulu/netflix.

The only real (minor) issue I have is the share drive/folder discovery similar to what MrBigglesworth is experiencing. The "shared" category on the left hand side of the Finder disappears/reappears periodically, so I have to use command+K to get to my NAS from time to time.

I went with the 15in since I already have an iPad. I was initially apprehensive that the iPad would continue to replace my laptop use like with the x220, but the two actually complement each other very well. I can switch to the MBP for stuff like writing long emails without missing a beat of my imessage conversations, and it helps that the multitouch gestures are similar between the two as well.

Now I just have to pop into the mac software thread to get some apps (need to decide between parallel vs vmware). I honestly have to say I haven't been this excited about using a laptop since my first one.

Also adding option to a lot of keyboard shortcuts invokes slightly different functionality. Like command option space brings up a search window instead of the spotlight menu, or command option i does a floating info inspector (which changes on the fly to what's selected) rather than a static info window. There's a lot of things like that, and they show up in the menus themselves if you hold option while looking through them.

I went to the Apple store over the weekend and looked at the 21" iMac vs a 27" display they had hooked up to a Mac Pro, and the 27" was enormous... almost too big.

I guess for the time it was released (early 2011) it was quite good, but since 2012 quite a lot of progress has been made in the laptop market. The battery isn't quite as amazing as it once seemed - especially while watching videos. The fan would get pretty intense and the top left side drat toasty while watching HD netflix/youtube. The sandy bridge GPU can't really do that much - even with casual 2D games (the only ones I tried) it has hiccups regularly. The resolution is low in the age of 1440x900+ in small laptops, and the small up/down/left/right keys are less than ideal for extended Excel use. The Thinkvantage software is largely junk but I couldn't remove them since some features require them (OSD, special shortcut buttons, etc.)

The worst offender though is the atrocious trackpad. I've tried different drivers and hacks but the multitouch gestures are basically a huge joke. Trying pinch-to-zoom - 1/3 of the time it gets it right, 1/3 it's the opposite and 1/3 nothing at all. I even checked a few other X220 machines but same deal.

I'm guess Apple will try to spread retina as widely as possible given the limitations of technology and their price point strategies. It might take them a year or so, but it's a huge advantage they have over Windows, where the high-DPI modes suck and will probably take years to catch up.

If they can make a retina MBA make sense I can't imagine they wouldn't go for it. That or the 13" rMBP and MBA will just ultimately converge.
