I'd wager there was something majorly wrong with the 850 that prevented it from being registered/sold for regular on-road use, despite its obviously good frame. That said I was on the other side of pretty much exactly what they show in that video and drat if that hasn't been going on since they started their safety kick. 1986 Subaru GL: Destroyed entire front end, radiator literally snapped in two. Barely limped to the side of the road. Volvo 240 DL: Cracked headlight lens. Could barely tell it had been in an accident.

Just checked race monitor, it's not in last place, but it does have the slowest best lap time. 1:58 vs 1:25.

So apparently Mazda made a W12 engine in the late 80's/early 90s. And when I say W12, I don't mean it in the VW-two-VR6s-slapped-together way. I mean a loving W. http://www.mazdaworld.net/forums/lofiversion/index.php?t671.html

Why not? Porsche and BMW have used magnesium blocks (although tbf the BMW blocks had aluminum sleeves).

Magnesium oil pan, too. Magnesium isn't a problem in large blocks unless you really, REALLY pour a lot of heat into it. Like say an engine compartment fire that's been going for a few minutes. Other than that it's pretty reasonable stuff.

That magnesium is underrated as a material and deserved another look. You can get some crazy high specific strengths from it, you just need a huge volume to make it as strong as a steel or alu part. To get it to burn it has to be at melting point and if your cylinder heads have made it there already then you've already got issues. (Just don't run it for so long that it creeps and all your preload comes off the head studs)

I hope I didn't post this earlier and it's not technically a car but I thought it was cool. Took this pic last year or something like that. I like how it looks like someone built a shed on a machine.
