I had a negative outlook clicking on that Froggy Fresh video but... he can rap. As for the lyrics, whatever man. Almost everyone can relate to work/hurt/pain. Chains just is escapism. I really don't want to get rapgenius on this stupid song but... what's "real" anyway? Cam'ron dissed Three Six as being actors, they dissed Bone Thugs as being fake, Riff Raff is awesome but do you think he really sold drugs(and seriously he's making GBS threads on rap right now, holy gently caress... you know, just watch the Ace of Space video, remake of an old song but it slays), and Rick Ross was a cop. Who's "real" and what does being "real" lend to music? Maybe being "real" is just doing what you want to the best you can.

No, it's not about being 'real'. All of these guys are entertainers first, drug dealers don't loving sing songs, period. Biggie at his biggest was a small time pusher. Why would anyone, ever, choose to work two completely separate jobs, when both have the exact chance of making you rich (nill to none except for the rare few).

My bigger problem with it is it's now become completely acceptable for white artists to appropriate everything black culture had, use it as their own, and not even have the decency to call it something else. And the audience and critics doesn't bat an eye. In fact refer to weak poo poo like Riff Raff as 'real' with a half smirk.

Like, 'ya I know he's basically black loving face aping a culture to steal money from one of the few avenues young black artists have to make it out of their lovely circumstances...but it's alright because he's like on drugs and CRAAAAAZY'

I've been listening to a lot of Macklemore recently. Love his stuff, partly because he raps about different or interesting topics (cough syrup abuse, gay rights, fuckin' thrift shops, etc) and partly because he's just a good rapper with good production. Is there anyone similar in those respects? I've already been recommended Madvillainy and Oneirology for interesting subjects.

Promathezine/Lean is NOT cough syrup and as a TussFiend I take this VERY seriously. The rap community needs to recognize the differences between dextromethorphan and promathezine.

Your not wrong. Misappropriation happens in music. A lot. Jazz, Rock & Roll, and now hip hop. And there are some that feel more genuine then others. I don't think what your saying is that white people don't have a place in hip hop, but maybe that white acts who seemed to be propped up by major labels aren't immediately shouted down as bogus by hip hop heads. They tend to have frivolous or just plain dumb content but yet get deals rolled out. That poo poo kind of perplexes me too. But trends are weird and sometimes inexplicable.

quote:

See I thought hip-hop was about expressing yourself through music but as it turns out if you are white and doing it you are aping a culture and stealing jobs from inner city youth.

But lets not pretend like that doesn't happen: it does. Sometime accidentally. It's hard to know the difference between what's hip hop culture and what's black culture, and I think we can agree there's a lot of overlap there. So white people overstep the boundaries of good taste sometimes. gently caress, I'm sure we've all seen that happen. Everyone wants to fit in. It's like back in high school when I was really afraid of being called or labeled a 'poser' so I did things to try to prove how 'whatever' I was. Mostly now, I recognize it as useless and invalid emotion.

Macklemore has some great songs about his view about being a white rapper. http://youtu.be/gdVRlM-kSx8, http://youtu.be/WAZ0kA-KvWg, and to a lesser extent http://youtu.be/6olL2rQwWwE, http://youtu.be/mP_x_7H8EH0,

Yeah cause Riff Raff says "nigga" all the time. And he totally acts Black, what with his Hologram Pandas and Ace of Space. Very black things.

Riff Raff is cool becuase hes the only white rapper who doesn't have to talk about how he's white all the time. Yelawolf is one step away from releasing an album called "white pride".
