I think the show suffered last season (due to the lack of Batiatus), but it was still pretty good. Looking forward to this tonight.

At my office all the guys religiously watch Spartacus just like the latest NFL games. Premier was pretty awesome and almost feels movie like with how the scale and overall effects budget has greatly increased in the final season. Basically going for relatively small area fights with a majority of the action happening on a single practical set in the first season to battlefield scale bloodbaths. Also I pray to Gods to finally offer Gannicus brand hair shampoo at the merchandising store. nate fisher posted:I think the show suffered last season (due to the lack of Batiatus), but it was still pretty good. Looking forward to this tonight. I find no fault with the last season even without John Hannah absent to fill the glorious bastard role. Other characters such as Glabus and Ashur really stepped up to the dick in chief villain roles in a satisfying way. Killing off characters even popular ones is one of the big draws of the show and getting mad over a character not making to end sort of shows that the development/connection to the audience really worked. etalian fucked around with this message at 22:47 on Jan 25, 2013 |

I was sad about Batiatus being gone, but "Libertus" and "Monsters" showed that everyone else more than made up for it. "Monsters" in particular has Spartacus.jpg and is one of the best episodes of TV ever made.

aBagorn posted:Agreed, it was simultaneously amazingly choreographed AND a great insight as to Crassus' character. Yeah, I'm guessing it will be a microcosm of the season. Crassus fights spartacus, makes an error of some sort and loses a battle. Then, seemingly makes the same error against him as a feint to achieve final victory. I know, because its what I would have done if I made the show.

If Crassus turned out to be this interesting, I'm really eager to find out what Julius Ceaser is going to be like, considering they might be making a spin-off show about him.

Crassus is so awesome omfg. Not only seems like a cool actor, but the character so far has been written awesomely. I echo the thoughts of others The fight with hilarus(which is what the cc says?) was so great. Also ridiculous Gannicus 4 way

muscles like this? posted:I'll say this about Liam's version of Spartacus, he brings such a savagery to the character. And we finally get him back with his two sword fighting style like in the original season. Like for his Mortal Combat dual decapitation finishing move I also like the writing for the character setting up his arc from getting successful revenge in the first season, deciding to expand his vengeance to all Romans in the second season but being very uncomfortable for next level of things in third season such as slowly becoming a unapproachable king figure. So at first, I thought Crassus looked like an interesting villain because he agreed to accept a lesser command "for the glory of Rome." Between that and his accepting that he was not above slaves in all things, it seemed like he was the first villain on the show who had a shred of humility and wanted to fight for something greater than himself. As it turned out, he is just fighting for himself, but the dynamic established by his training scenes and speech to his son mean that he's still drat cool, and smart enough to accept that he's inferior in some respects while still fighting for his own glory. This was also not a good episode to be a horse.

Crassius came across as pretty awesome. He's not Battiatus, but really, there's no repeating that. Still a very promising premiere after a season that seamed to stall, going nowhere fast.

I cracked up when the overly long 4 way immediately cut to two dudes making out. I will not be convinced that wasn't intentional to make a ton of dudes get super uncomfortable about their wood. Crassus was so cool I had to keep reminding myself he was a bastard, slave owning, (homophobic?) killing Roman. Just seeing a Roman who understood that underestimating "slaves" and not seeing them as men, warriors, and generals was the mistake kept threatening to win me over. I had to keep telling myself that all those people around him were slaves, he sacrificed men to political maneuvering, and he killed a guy to feed his ego. drat Romans set the bar for being cool so low.

Crassus is awesome. I thought they would have made him more of a manipulative bastard because that's what he's known for but I like this depiction of him as well. "You ask me to kill you?" "I command you to try." Oh, also, that 4way was like, literal porn.
