And, well, the terminology could've been interchangeable as far as I was concerned.

Mulefisk posted:Stuff like this is why religious zealots get so defensive when it comes to science. I mean jesus christ, how do they know that poo poo? It's one of those things that people often don't realize when they read an intro science textbook: every single sentence you read/hear in one of these sorts of broad overviews represents decades of work and debate by dozens, or even hundreds, of the smartest researchers in their field. It's like looking at the pyramids and asking how they came to exist: the answer is "a lot of loving work". Mulefisk posted:And how can I fact check it as a normal muggle? If you mean check it against the scientific consensus, the answer is "read a book", as others have said. If you mean check it against reality, the answer is "stop being a normal muggle and go to school for it". It is often difficult for lay people to personally play with some of this stuff for the simple reason that the apparatus required is extremely specialized and expensive.

As a historian of early medieval Europe, this has blown my loving mind out the back of my skull: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvKRbi2ovDY. That's a song from Christopher Lee's operatic metal album about the life of Charlemagne, which is apparently also being adapted into a musical. I was distracted as hell for a while because of Lee's voice, since Charlemagne supposedly had an unusually high voice for someone his size.

Doggboat posted:Is there a full documentary like this? I would love to watch more, but all I can find is the stuff with a slow soothing narration, that avoids most special terms and leaves long pauses so the viewer can take notes. I don't want to take notes, I just want to get blasted with information that I hardly understand. The BBC did an incredible hour long documentary a few months ago called 'Secret Universe: The Hidden Life of the Cell' which has the same kind of imagery as that, except looks a lot better, and it documents how viruses work using a lot of the processes and organelles found inside cells. It's also narrated by David Tennant which just makes it better. Here's a clip of it, if you can find the whole documentary it's definitely worth a watch. Also yes, what you see in the documentary is pretty much exactly what it actually looks like because the function of those proteins depend entirely on their shape and structure. The only major difference seen in the visualization of it all is that the whole cell is loving full of these things flying around, rather than the few you see at a time in the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1MnNO4I9aU TL:DR - Cellular and molecular biology is loving awesome.

Here in Canada, I learned the basics of that stuff (phospholipids, proteins, other nomenclature) in Grade 12 (Senior Year) Biology. All the rest of the video is very comprehensible with just a knowledge of first year College Biology. So if you legitimately want to learn cellular biology, find a first year college bio textbook or the equivalent online. Cheers

Parallel Paraplegic posted:Man videogames are goddamn weird now It's because of the technology used for all the characters that get any screen time. A major part of the game is reading the people you're interviewing/interrogating, so they basically directly transposed the actor's faces and movements onto the character models.

As these things get closer to realism, it becomes more and more subconsciously unsettling. I think it will continue to be until we hit the point where we can't tell if it's fake or not. I recently saw the movie Life of Pi and was very impressed with the CGI, especially the tiger. I was wondering multiple times during the movie if they combined a CG tiger with a real one to make it more believable, but apparently the whole thing was CG. Very impressive. Granted we are quite a few years away from that sort of realism in games, but it's getting there. I think LA Noir was a big step in the right direction for effectively reproducing motion captured actors.
