For SS2, I would recommend running the SS2Tool anyway. It will get the game mod-ready if the GOG installer didn't. I also suggest that you go into the cam_ext.CFG file and uncomment the d3d_disp_scaled_2d_overlay 64 command. This will stretch the HUD to readable size on a high res display.

C-Euro posted:When I did my first playthrough of Deus Ex last year I was told to mod it with New Vision and Biomod/Shifter despite it being my first time, are there any mods of texture packs out there that people would recommend in a similar way (as in "you need to play it this way even if it's your first go-round")? I'm not sure I'd recommend anything as being as mandatory as Biomod, but there is some stuff you should check out. (All of these links go to systemshock.org, which requires registration.) SS2Tool automatically sets up the game to be mod-ready, if the GOG version isn't set up that way already. The Newbie Modding Guide has links to a bunch of good mods; SHTUP, SHMUP, Four Hundred, and Vurt's in particular are straight graphics and sound upgrades and there's no reason not to use them. Rebirth is a model upgrade and takes a bit more artistic license, and ADaOB, while it fixes a lot of issues, also makes some text and gameplay changes that not everyone likes; those could go either way. Tacticool I haven't personally used. MonkeyforaHead posted:Good news: comes with that new patch installed to make it actually work right. This is particularly good news for people like me who couldn't get the loving patch to install on older copies because the game itself wouldn't install to begin with! Cutscenes play properly, widescreen options available, co-op should work fine. Hang on. I'm hearing (here and elsewhere) that it's pretty much a stock 2.4 install with some configuration tweaks. But: quote:Rambourg: There are some user-made mods out there which do phenomenal work on the game’s stability, but none of them were quite perfect, so we took the game to our expert techninjas to analyse and swat the remaining bugs. It was some work to get it done, but as this is a game that we’ve wanted to release for four-plus years, it was also definitely a labour of love. So, uh, are they claiming to have made the 2.4 patch? Or are they saying that their "team of expert techninjas" were responsible for the configuration tweaks and they just started with 2.4 as a base? Now I'm actually really curious about what happened to the source code that was reputed to have surfaced a year or so ago. Apparently someone came across a disk with the code for a console port of SS2 that also contained large portions of the original Thief 2 code as well. When the 1.19 thief patch and the 2.4 SS2 patches surfaced last year and given the nature of the fixes it contained I just assumed it was one of the people that had access to that code who did those patches on the quiet as they seemed to be unable to get the rights holders to allow a proper release of the code. The name of the guy who released the patches went by the name Le Corbeau which means the crow/raven in french but was also the title of this film http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Corbeau about someone sending anonymous letters.

Four Hundred is another texture enhancement. Then there is the System Shock 2 Mods database. Unfortunately, I cannot for the life of me find SS2Tool or the Mod Manager.

Well, the atmosphere in this game is pretty brutal, rose tinted glasses be damned. I was being chased down a hallway by a... something, i ducked round a corner and realized that i couldn't hear it coming anymore, so i used the inventory to patch up a little bit. Then i decided to peek around the corner and this sadistic fucker is standing right there looking at me, just waiting. Boom, I'm dead. I'm going to stop playing and wait for nightfall, the best way to play SS2 is at night with no lights on and headphones.

Mechwarrior 2 was probably one of my favorite games during the 1997-2001 era. I had a hell of a time trying to understand what the plot was aside from quazi-religious "clans" fight it out for honor and glory (think Klingons). In MW2, they must have made a mistake because there was no chance of exploding if you overheated so long as you only carried lazers and other energy weapons. You could override the auto-shutdown and just keep firing away. It also negated any need for heat sinks so you could just stick a ton of guns (and a bigger engine) on the heaviest mech you could get. I took to M2: Mercenaries even more. I liked the inclusion of a finance system and the ability to take any mech (or group of mechs) into battle. Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries did this to some effect and was enjoyable, but not quite to the degree that MW2 achieved. They also had great music. Also this. Edit: I also remember showing it to friends, but knew they wouldn't be able to handle the ridiculous control scheme. They'd say, "Can I try it?" "Not possible." Edit 2: Also just bought SS2. Gotta get home and download it before the lawsuits come in and ruin everything! StickySweater fucked around with this message at 20:49 on Feb 14, 2013 |
