Found out today both my wife and I got our Class 1 Med. Clearance last week (woohoo!)

My daughters medical clearance is still in process. My stepson (whose info I gave at the OA's) apparently is not on the travel/medical orders and they cannot process his medical clearance yet. So I'm going to have to contact my HR POC today, have them add him to the orders, then call MED back so they can begin processing his medical clearance.

Great news! Keep knocking out those checkboxes. With how fast things have been moving we stand a chance to make it in the June/July class...

I think you are a few weeks ahead of me. I'm still waiting on being contacted by Security to begin the process.

I also recently started a federal job even though I was on the register. I accepted the federal job back in September but they took forever with clearances. I was still in the clearance process with FS at the time and my medical wasn't looking good. I finally started with the feds in January and BAM last week I get called from the register. I hadn't expected it to happen until fall. I came in at a low salary with the fed job because I was just trying to get any federal job on post near home. When the DOS did my salary they gave me a step for my BA, a step for my MS, then I think a step for every year of related experience so I ended up maxing out at step 14. And we get that overseas addition of 16% which isn't too far from the DC locality pay (which is I thnk 19%?) so not bad at all. Of course I don't have to cope with DC rent since we live in military housing so that makes a huge difference. I had anticipated them just matching my federal salary. So I'm getting a lot more than what I make now. I feel like a total jerk though because I'm gonna have to tell my awesome boss here that I'm leaving so soon.

I feel the same way. Granted I'm not on the register yet, but once I get there/get called up (depending how long that takes) I'm going to have to have the same conversation. My boss (I've only been there a week) and coworkers have been awesome. But the Foreign Service was something I was working on before this, and there are no guarantees on if/when you will get called up...

It's interesting how these groups, when they feel mistreated by an agency, will strike out at completely unrelated workers who had nothing to do with their "wrong".

The equivalent retaliation would be finding whatever random hackers you can lay hands on and beating the snot out of them.

Whatever sympathy Anonymous may engender at times, these childish tantrums just create more enemies.

A Y tour is a negotiated short tour for a duration less than the standard tour of duty for a post. Naturally, these tend to be at more difficult to staff posts, but theoretically could have other applications (one or two year Olympics coordinator, etc.) They generally are PCS tours.

Now I just need that extra money for DS to actually happen, and for them to decide they want all that money to go to extra agents.

How long did your clearance take? I heard they've sped up the process considerably (they're in the middle of doing all of the interviews for me right now).

Mine took longer than the timelines I've seen for other people. I think I had my interview around early September, and got some additional information to the investigator a week or two after that. Initial contact with me was sometime in mid August. I completed the EQIP in late July.

Depends on the Department and clearance, but that doesn't match my experience at State. What DoD or others do, I can't say one way or the other.

I currently work reviewing security clearances and you'd be amazed how much stuff is caught outside the interview (which is where they try to catch you up first). After the interview there's a lot of background work done and funky stuff turns up all the time. DOD stuff is the worst though, apparently recruiters think that if they don't bother putting those arrests, DUIs, drug use, etc on the recruit's SF86 that we won't find out. Then the investigator finds stuff through various record searches and other stuff and has to file a recruiter falsification report. On average we receive at LEAST 20 of those a day. Makes for some fun reading (and job security). I'm pretty jaded by now, very little surprises me. "Oh, look an indictment for conspiracy to defraud the government, there's a fine upstanding recruit" etc.

I agree with the sentiments of that article, the process is antiquated and needs to be improved. Here's an idea to save money, don't perform a full reinvestigation from scratch on me for a lower level clearance 14 months after I'd just spent 7 months being investigated for the first one.

Waste of time and tax payer money.

Requiring a different investigation for each agency seems like kind of a waste. I don't understand why the OPM isn't the sole adjudicator of all normal clearances.

It's slowly moving that way, OPM now does the DOD investigations as well as most federal, they're trying to move all security clearance investigations to OPM's Federal Investigative Services but it's a slow process and means moving people and hiring. They're also working on a new computer system that will make things a lot more efficient. Gonna take some time though, as always with the government. The final adjudication decision though is mostly with the hiring authority's own security office which will probably be changing in years to come. FIS makes recommendations and provides investigation data. A lot of military get through with some pretty pathetic records, other agencies not so much. A big problem is that each agency (and the military in particular) kind of does their own thing when it comes to deciding what they'll let through. I've seen people going for federal positions with a single DUI get rejected and military folks with criminal records, serious financial problems, history of multiple extramarital affairs, and drug use (and I mean all those things in one record) get through with no problem. Military is a lot more lax and doesn't want to give up their own adjudication to a place that might be a lot tighter on that stuff, their opinion on what makes a trustworthy candidate differs from other agencies greatly. Hell it can differ from agency to agency...picture an application for the Foreign Service vs someone applying for a low level janitor job at the local Social Security Administration office.

Greetings, I'm an emissary from the Thunderdome in CC, a weekly fiction contest with a lot of swears and mockery. You can visit it by clicking on my awesome avatar! More to the point, this week we've been tasked with researching something completely new and then incorporating it into our stories. I'm asking you guys for help because I know almost nothing about embassies or being diplomatic in general and I'm hoping you can make my eventual story suck less.

I've been reading the thread and getting a great idea of what life is like day-to-day for your average embassy staffer, but I'm trying to spice that up with some crime so I have a few questions.

1. Diplomatic pouches. Are those still a thing? Who handles them on either end?
2. Who investigates crimes committed on embassy soil?
3. Any cool stories about stupid/illegal things people've gotten up to while you were stationed overseas?

Swear to god I'm not a foreign spy. Thanks in advance, and I appreciate that there's probably a fair amount of stuff you're not allowed to talk about.
