This is how real trucks do it:

:eng101: that is actually not the same. That leaf is a floating leaf, it rides on the two perches, with apparently a pair of overload perches (and possibly an overload leaf pack) added on top. There's no shackle and only one leaf eye, which goes to a pin through one perch to keep the axle located.

What the abortion of a truck I posted was going for is some attempt at limiting leaf wrap - and probably failing. The real answer is to use a traction bar, which mounts to the axle housing at two points like a radius arm or trailing arm, then has a shackle at the body end. That way, it transmits the torque from the axle housing to the chassis, while the leafs are only used to handle vertical load.

Also, looks like MDT/HDT grade stuff (thus your "real trucks", I guess) - square axle housing tube, overloads, etc.

Similar setups are used on military trucks with dual rear axles that need extreme load capacity but also need to have substantial suspension articulation capability - the leaf is mounted to the chassis via a single large pivot at its center, and each end of the leaf rides on a pad mounted on top of an axle housing. The axle housings are each kept located under the truck using three or four large torque rods / dogbones.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like the shocks are going to shear off the first time there's a real load on them, unless that one bolt is a lot stronger than I think.

I've seen plenty of shocks mounted in single shear on factory vehicles, but yeah, that's sketch-ish. Not my primary concern though - everything else is.

it's bad not because it's single sheer but because the threaded part of the bolt is connected to the tab on the axle

Hey, they've got places to go, and a foot of snow on the highway is not a good enough reason to slow down to 130.

The only thing I hate more than hippie neo-liberal fascists and anarchists are the hypocrite fat cat suits they grow up to become.
I saw that travesty in person and it was ridiculous. Edmontonians know we have lovely winters, so they buy 4x4 trucks with all season tires and think they'll be fine. Then they crash everywhere and wind up in the ditch whenever it snows because a 4x4 truck isn't a cure all for lovely driving.

I've driven a RWD S10 this winter with cheap all seasons and never had a problem because I know how to counter steer and slow down when the weather is terrible. Most Edmonton drivers don't.

I have something to add to the terrible car thread: the current gen full sized pick ups. I drove my roommate's Ram 1500 SLT and I can't get over how bad it was. You feel completely disconnected to the road. It's drive by wire and when you put your foot down the vehicle doesn't respond at all. The traction control over reacts so it seems like you're not driving it so much as you are suggesting what you want to do. The steering is electronic and feel weightless. I can't believe how much I hated that truck. I love driving my 15 year old S10 because it doesn't have any of that electronic bullshit. When I drive I want to feel like I'm in control, not just a passenger making suggestions. I like trucks, but I hate how the new ones have just been ruined by driver assists.

Not to mention they are on the wrong side of the spring to prevent axle wrap on acceleration.

There isn't any torque going to the front end other than when 4WD is engaged, which is likely never on that thing. In fact, it's probably just a symmetrical aesthetic so that it 'matches' the rear (where they would be far more functional.)

Just to make you feel a bit better, this happens in Denver too. A week ago we got roughly 3 inches of snow overnight, and the entire city crashed into each other. There were stretches of i-70 that usually take 15 minutes that were taking 2 hours due to the wrecks. People in general are stupid as gently caress and think that 4wd means "I CAN DRIVE LIKE AN rear end in a top hat IN THE SNOW". I've pretty much come to the point where if there is more than about 6" of snow, or I get up and traffic is already hosed, I just call in because it isn't worth the headache to deal with all of these idiots.

As far as drive-by-wire and electronic steering, my car has both of these and I personally love the electronic steering compared to old hydrolic. It's just a matter of the vehicle in question I guess. My car is just as responsive as a car with a throttle cable and normal steering. The thing to remember is that all of these newfangled electronics is to keep your average moron from colliding with other vehicles. Although, I will say it is pretty awesome to get in and drive a car that has basically no driver aids and everything is mechanical, which is why I'm building my 58.

Some lady in front of me mistook the advance green for a straight green this morning and nearly killed someone turning left in front of her, so I'm not surprised that in whiteout conditions Edmontonians can have a lot of crashes.

I've driven a long, long way on a front diff only of several 4x4 vehicles. In all likelihood it's not a problem.

I'd guess it would go through transfer cases faster, probably by stretching the chain out. Other than that though, yeah the front diff should be fine for it. It would be funny if it had manual hubs, I'd want to sneak in there and click em off when no-one was looking.

How can you tell? Zooming in that looks like a nut on the end. It's entirely possible that what we're looking at is proper stud with a threaded end outside of the sheer load.

Looking at the rest of the truck I wouldn't bet on it, but I'm not seeing anything to indicate otherwise.

God I hate those lovely cargo carriers, my store sells them along with FREE INSTALLATION! Which means the Tech 1's (basically me) get stuck installing them all since we're paid hourly. The smaller ones are the worst, they don't come assembled like the larger ones do so we get to duck around bolting the hinges onto each clamshell half for a couple hours.

Regarding hand position while driving, I've seen a lot of old ladies around me doing the "Double Douchebag" position -- both hands together at the top of the wheel. It looks so ungainly and awkward, and I find myself wary whenever I notice someone doing it.

Philly is the worst. One time on 95, I saw a van literally burst into flames under the hood after driving for about a half mile with smoke coming out everywhere. Another time, I saw a guy blow out his tire in the left lane, and he was trying to get to the right shoulder, but no one would let him through - there was a huge shower of sparks flying off of his wheel as it ground down. Also, there is always a car broken down in the middle lane of 676 in Center City at any time of day.

Walking beam suspension is awesome. The best application is probably the Scammell Explorer, where it's coupled with an a-framed, centre-pivot leaf on the front axle, so it has very heavy suspension in terms of carrying capacity, but is ridiculously flexible/compliant over undulations, because the springs aren't really a factor.

Also, the rear brakes use this crazy collection of rods and pivots to give all-mechanical actuation without binding during the travel.

Seeing as this is the terrible car stuff thread, here's today's terrible thing: My co-worker needed me to put some air in his tyre for him, because it looked a bit flat. It was at 5psi.
