I was going to post the same thing, i think it was one of the first mainstream games to have textured polys and shading all over the place, not just the planes. I remember GamePro raving over it. It ran smooth as silk on a crappy 486/25 too.

Actually the first version has some performance issues, partially because the graphics were so far ahead of the time, but also due to the coding/engine. The later CD version & expansion had improved performance compared to the initial release. And by then the 486 DX2/66 was more affordable so it was smooth.

Man I'm loving M.A.X. I played the poo poo out of the limited demo back in highschool, but by then the game was already unavailable. The full game is everything I thought it would be. A kickass turn-based strategy game.

It's one of the best strategy games ever made in terms of mechanics, the whole upgrade and research system makes units so unpredictable. Sadly the AI isn't great and the game has a memory leak, it's pretty much impossible to get past turn 300ish.

I never understood why nobody tried to make a game like that (M.A.X 2 was poo poo).

For some reason I really enjoy just spreading out my base over the entire map, using turrets instead of actual mobile units to kill everything. Having Missile Launchers that can fire 3 shots across half the map is hilariously broken.

vvvvvvv I think Sid Meier games are the source of the "one more turn" syndrome

KKnD 2 is more balanced than its predecessor, it has more fun with its campaign structure (pick where you'd like to attack on the map, leading to branching paths) and the added faction of murderous farming robots fits the insane style and humour KKnD had... But I felt the humour lagged a bit behind, they never improved the AI or pathfinding, some units had more frames to their animations than others, for whatever reason, and I've always been a fan of FMW, which isn't present in KKnD 2. With that been said, if you liked KKnD you'll like KKnD 2, if not for the more varied multiplayer then for the more engaging campaign.

I was referring to the 2004 remake. Sorry, I should have specified. But yeah, Pirates 2004 is my introduction to the game and, from what I've read on Wikipedia, added a LOT of new content (multi-ship combat, minigames like sneaking and dancing, specialist crew members etc) that wasn't in the original game. It's on Steam, which might be a stumbling block towards getting it on Gog though.

Pathologic (2005) is now on GOG for $10.

It's... something. Pathologic is something. You most likely want to check a LP of it, because the game is notoriously broken and only half-way translated, but what is there is completely unique and has set the tone for every Ice-Pick Lodge game since.

In alternative, you can read the three parts essay about it on RPS: Part 1, 2, and 3. Certainly better than just be confused by the trailer.

The dance game is certainly a QTE that will fluster anyone with a lack of sense of rhythm, but the other minigames were fun enough. Pirates is fun for a good while, especially if you play it alongside a kid. I just wish there was a female pirate mod for my niece :( Total missed opportunity there, Sid, girls like video games too.

Also, the only way Pathologic will ever be worth ten bucks to me is if it had a decent translation.

I'd actually love it if they released the original Pirates! (before it got the gold treatment.) It's pure nostalgia, kind of like the old EGA versions of King's Quest and stuff, but I played that game so much on my Tandy 1000. :allears:

Something is certainly the best way to describe it. Everything about the game seems designed to make you feel off and uneasy. It's also an incredibly depressing game, that I've only been able to play in short stretches. Still it's a game that I think everyone should look into even if they don't play it because there's nothing else like it.

EDIT: The translation is a little wonky no doubt. I think because they were trying to translate into Shakespearean English, but if you have a few Russian games under your belt I think you'd be able to manage.

I played Pathologic for 30 minutes a few years ago. The only thing I remember was stepping outside to see a weird masked guy staring at me. I wandered around this weird, foggy town and eventually stumbled upon some villagers burning people alive.

I uninstalled the game immediately but swore I would pick it up again later.

We got some serious shit to discuss.

Pathologic plays like a dream.

And I don't mean it runs really smoothly and looks gorgeous. I mean it feels like you're playing a dream, where things are all just THIIIIS close to making sense, but everything's all jumbled together. Everything seems just close enough to being an average game, and then you find a gigantic geometric tower standing in the middle of an open field. Or two strange men in a mask who completely kick down the fourth wall and talk directly to you, the player, but the English isn't quite right, so you're only vaguely aware of what's being talked about. But somehow that just made it even better for me. The game is just every so slightly out of your grasp, and it's not afraid to completely lose you, which is a welcome change from every other FPS on the market, that makes sure to constantly make sure you know exactly what's going on and what you're doing at any given moment. Pathologic basically has you walking through a fever dream.

Two Worlds loving rules but don't go into it expecting a great game. It's not unplayable but it have several game mechanics that are completely broken (duct-taping equipment, re-spawning you almost instantly next to wherever you died, alchemy) and it's pretty unpolished overall. It's a very fun guilty-pleasure game though, it's a perfect game to buy on sale.

I liked Septerra Core a lot when I was younger, but it could be really tedious at times (lots of backtracking through long, maze-like dungeons). It did have a pretty neat setting, though, so I'd say it's worth trying at this price.
