Rupert Buttermilk posted:Wait, new rendering engine? When is this happening? Can't believe I missed out on this, but then again, I don't follow all of the twitters. Apparently it is dropping sometime between 1.6 and 1.7. Jeb has already confirmed that before they are able to implement the new rendering engine, they have to push out a new client (the actual executable) as well as finally pushing an updated LWJGL. These are both confirmed for 1.6 according to a recent tweet from Jeb, however he is unsure if they will be able to package the rendering engine at the same time (can't blame him, way to many variables for new bugs with those two changes, adding the rendering engine on top will make it a mess to track what is causing what). So if the rendering engine doesn't drop as a separate engine, it should be out by 1.7. The Mojang team has been saying that the engine rewrite is "better than Optifine" and will make Optifine obsolete. Take that how you will. 1.6 is aimed for a May release according to Jeb's twitter.

Goddammit, gently caress you guys and your stupid game. I couldn't even sleep last night because I kept thinking of awesome poo poo I wanted to do to my goddamn fortress I'm building. I was slapping the stupid thing together with cobblestone out of sheer ignorance until I randomly discovered how to make stone bricks.. ( I haven't been researching a whole lot..) In the middle of re-doing the whole goddamn thing, I was inside my walls tearing down a 3-high row, replacing it with brick, just mechanically working my way down- until a Creeper wandered in out of nowhere. I took a couple swipes, it exploded and killed me, and left a huge breach in my wall down to my basement below, not to mention losing me some magic pants I had found. And that was right as I was having to go to bed. Now I have to figure out how to make that never ever happen again. As if that wasn't bad enough, for some reason, when I went back inside to regroup, the entire cast of extras from "The Walking Dead" decided to assault every lower entrance at the same time, so I had to brawl with 4 zombies that smashed through my wooden doors. Why didn't someone slap me in the head and tell me about this when it first launched?!

Really this is a great time to be getting into MC; the game is way better and more polished than it's ever been (though there is much room for improvement still), the community isn't getting any smaller, and mods are entering a brand new generation of excellent design.

If someone doesn't mind indulging me, I have several noob questions: Without having to wade through piles of random crap, what are some good, basic texture packs I can throw on my vanilla game? Those black creepy dudes with the purple glowy auras... best to avoid entirely, or can I take them? Rounded a corner and came face to face with one, but he seemed to be preoccupied by something. I found a room in a cave with 2 chests and a flaming cage with a spinning spider in it, and it keeps spitting spiders at me. What the gently caress kills this thing? I had to board up the room, and I assume it's just filled to the rafters with spiders. If I break a chest with items in it, are they vaporized? (I'm sure I can test this.. away from my computer and curious) How do iron doors work? I know you have to use a switch, but can I not put a switch on both sides? In my tests, it seems one-way. Don't want to leave my front door open for nasties to get in while I'm away. I came home from a scouting run to a creeper making himself at home in my base. Everything is well lit and locked up tight. How the gently caress did he get in? Luckily, I was able to kill him without him blowing up my crib.

One popular, easy to use texturepack is Sphax. It's quite nice. I think they fixed the texture resolution bug when they reformatted the textures, so this should work right out of the box now. The creepy tall guys are Endermen, and they drop rare Ender Pearls which you can throw to teleport (uses up the item and costs some health, but you can teleport wherever it lands). They can also be used with blaze powder to create Eyes of Ender, which have a number of uses. That's the only way you can get the pearls and eyes, so they're worth killing now and again if you run into them. Otherwise they can be avoided. Wearing a pumpkin on your head averts their "hostile when looked at" feature, and prevents them from teleporting during a fight. The spider-spawner you found just spawns spiders. It only works in a small range, and if there's no dark enough spots in that range it won't work, so you can just light up the room with torches and it'll stop spawning. You can also use a pick to destroy the spawner for some XP, but it might be useful to keep around if you ever need string on demand. Breaking a chest spills the items on the ground as if they were dropped. Dropped items remain for a few minutes, then are destroyed. Iron doors do work by switches or other redstone input. The reason it doesn't work from both sides is that it's not a toggle; switches are on/off, and since the one outside is still "on", it doesn't matter if the one inside is "on" or "off". The door is still getting an "on" signal, so it remains open. Consider using a button instead, which turns itself off after a second or two, giving you enough time to slip inside. If your doors were all closed, and there's no other means of access, there must be a dark surface somewhere inside your base. One block is all it takes.

TShields posted:Without having to wade through piles of random crap, what are some good, basic texture packs I can throw on my vanilla game? It depends what you're looking for. Cartoony, realistic, a complete re-interpretation of the game, etc. I use Misa's Realistic Texture Pack, which is a semi-realistic texture pack that gives more detail to blocks and a little more variety and whimsy to the mobs. (Creepers use camouflage based on the biomes, zombies and skeletons include many pop culture references). quote:Those black creepy dudes with the purple glowy auras... best to avoid entirely, or can I take them? Rounded a corner and came face to face with one, but he seemed to be preoccupied by something. They are Endermen. They will pick up, carry, and move "soft" blocks (dirt, gravel, sand, etc). If you look at them, they will go nuts and rush at you and attack you and teleport away when you attack them, then re-appear nearby and rush at you again. Try to avoid them until you have better equipment. quote:I found a room in a cave with 2 chests and a flaming cage with a spinning spider in it, and it keeps spitting spiders at me. What the gently caress kills this thing? I had to board up the room, and I assume it's just filled to the rafters with spiders. You found a dungeon! Dungeons contain mob spawners for either zombies, skeletons, or spiders. You can break the spawners with a pick, but you might want to save them and set something up so you can grind experience from the spawners and farm item drops. Spawners only "spawn" mobs within a certain range if it's dark, so you can disable it by lighting the area up with plenty of torches. quote:If I break a chest with items in it, are they vaporized? (I'm sure I can test this.. away from my computer and curious) The items explode out onto the floor. Just make sure you can pick them up and carry them/store them; Items left floating on the ground with vanish are a few minutes. quote:How do iron doors work? I know you have to use a switch, but can I not put a switch on both sides? In my tests, it seems one-way. Don't want to leave my front door open for nasties to get in while I'm away. It depends on your setup and what you want to do. It can be as simple as "use a different type of switch/put it in a different place" to "set up a redstone circuit." The Minecraft Wiki and the other people in this thread will be able to help you with pictures if you give some more information. quote:I came home from a scouting run to a creeper making himself at home in my base. Everything is well lit and locked up tight. How the gently caress did he get in? Luckily, I was able to kill him without him blowing up my crib. Press F3 and look at your light level. Second line from the bottom. The numbers next to bl: sl: and rl: At least one of numbers those needs to be higher than 7 in any given space to prevent mobs from spawning on that spot. Make sure your lighting is set up to keep those numbers above 7.

It is one of the best 16x16 packs I have ever seen, if inflated texture size happens to be an issue with those fancy 32 and up packs. Between the block ctm and the biome tinting on blocks, the pack has goddamn style. His website has much better images as the ones above contain a few specially made textures.
