Both are extremely solid, but if you liked MLA that much, you're very, very likely to heavily enjoy Fate Stay Night.

Fate/stay night is the other "big one" alongside Muv-Luv. Arguably the most popular VN ever made. You may not end up liking it as much as some but in the end it will probably be worthwhile in some capacity. There's also Steins;Gate, which has picked up a lot of momentum over the months and is now #2 on vndb I believe. I may be very biased, but I would certainly also recommend Higurashi and Umineko, even more so if you're going in blind.

However, I'm not sure I'd label any of those as romance. There is some incidental stuff in FSN and S;G, but that's it. If you do want to go down that road, there's always Key (CLANNAD, Little Busters!, Rewrite). Maybe Kira Kira or Majikoi for something more lighthearted (mostly).

I don’t mean to digress from the current conversation, but I had a question to ask. Hardcore Gaming 101 did an article on a visual novel called YU-NO and its English translation patch a year or two ago. I also found that when the patch was released, it was also brought up during the old VN thread.

However, where do you download the actual game from? (Is it a :filez: kind of thing?)

After looking up Hardcore Gaming 101, I'm curious. Are there other blogs or other gaming sites that regularly look at VN's? I'm interested in seeing how they're presented to the general gaming population, if at all.

After sleeping on it, What the heck is up with Muv Luv Alternative's ending? Who lined up this "perfect" world? Kasumi thanks Sumika but couldn't that just be because she remembers her sacrifice and friendship? Or tears up at being so happy to see Takeru and being able to make memories of her own? No matter how much Sumika had her thumb on the scale when the worlds realigned it was stated over and over that her death meant no more altered worlds.

I was bummed out finishing Umineko but I still could reread it. I'm not sure if I could ever read this again. I think knowing the awful truth is too poisonous.

The worlds hosed up by Takeru are now back to normal. Sumika basically modified the reset so create an entirely new, better branch, I think.

I don't think the ending is that bad anymore, thanks to some posts earlier in the thread.

I enjoyed the journey overall, but really disliked the ending to MLA even after sitting on it for a while. Particularly because it feels incredibly rushed compared to the rest of the game, and abandons a lot of the core themes that the game had been building up for a really long time. That and I'm not a big fan of reset endings.

A shame that the newer stuff is terrible too.

Honestly if a blog or website talks about pure VNs at all, I don't think targeted towards a "general gaming population", except for games like 999 or Phoenix Wright which might be categorized as "Adventure." The general populace still seems to think they're all pornographic.

Other than that, pretty much all blogs I've seen that covers the topic either

1) Relishes in the porn aspects
or
2) Tries to think of a billion ways in which someone can write the scene "I know it has sex scenes in it, but you can skip them and it's really good guys!"

As long as visual novels have sexual elements in them, they're going to be that polarizing, unfortunately. It's kind of a shame that the idea of sexuality and sex in media is so taboo, because visual novels are a medium that I bet a lot of people would really enjoy if they didn't make people feel skeevy or weirded out.

On that note, what other VNs are like Steins;Gate, in that they don't really feature it/that at all and are still successful?

Key has been all ages since Clannad, though some spin-off stuff has had porn in it. Type-moon's most recent stuff has been non-pornographic too, but its not translated yet. There are also tons of all-ages console VNs, but few if any of those ever leave Japan. I think Da Capo 3 was all ages too, but I'm not sure if Mangagamer would actually license it like the first two games given that.

There's Narcissu and it's sequel. It's not anything super special like all the other examples but it's short and sweet.

And also Hatoful Boyfriend and it's fandisc, Symphonic Rain and True Remembrance. I haven't played the last two so I can't vouch for the quality of them but they seem to be good enough. There's also a few games out there that have patches or options to skip/disabled the sexual content.

Symphonic Rain has one kinda questionable scene but it's optional and easily avoided if you have any VN experience at all and doesn't show anything anyway. Other than that I loved it, so I can vouch for its quality.

Regarding the MLA ending:

I think everyone who thinks he couldn't have lived a normal life after his ordeals, taking into evidence his ill-fated escape into pseudo-extra, is being stupid.

A) He was momentarily severely traumatized, had been drugged up, and hadn't been given time to cope, and then the tragedy train then kept on rolling.
B) A big loving point is made of him getting over that poo poo by steeling himself, and reiterated by Isumi who admitted that he didn't make him undergo actual hypnotic therapy.

The epilogue is just anticlimatic as gently caress. Sure, it solves Sumika's "guilt" by creating a world where some Takeru can be with all of the girls, but the man Takeru is at the end of Alternative, the one who went through the loops, the one who changed the world for the better, is gone. He doesn't get to fulfill his own desire to see things through to the end and only then return to his world. He doesn't get to fulfill his promise to Sumika to go to his world's Sumika and tell her everything (and be less of an rear end in a top hat).

He doesn't even get to fulfill Meiya's wishes to remember them all.

Yes, his character development is completely destroyed. The character, for all intents and purposes, dies.

That they so continually tease the reader with the possibility of him remembering just makes it even worse; the fade to black prior to the epilogue would've been a superior ending.

I always thought about it within the context of the line earlier in MLA about when Yuuko describes the two Takerus existing in one body, with one of them in control, how they would eventually come to an equilibrium and merge into one person with the memories of both. (I'm not making this up, there was a line to that effect, wasn't there?) Anyway, taken in the context of the ending this could mean that Alternative-Takeru's consciousness still exists in the unconscious of Final Extra/Altered Fable Takeru, and will at some point down the line merge so that he, in a sense, regains those memories.

This might just be wishful thinking for a true sequel as opposed to more side story stuff, along the same lines as the theory that since Extra and its branches are supposed to be "close" to Alternative's world in terms of dimensional geography, that it's more likely that the BETA simply haven't found Extra-earth yet as opposed to not existing entirely.

It's likely they will find some sort of equualibrium yeah.

While possible, I really wouldn't want to see the BETA in extra's world. It seems too cruel. They were mostly beaten back because the world of alt and unlimited was still in the midst of post WWII militarism, not to mention a non-disarmed japan. The world of today in extra is much less prepared for the beta than it was even 50 years ago when they appeared in alt's world.

I'm on the Lucia route in Rewrite, and it's pretty good so far. I like that, despite being a pretty typical tsundere, Lucia has actual reasons for being that way (unlike Chihaya, who never quite seemed to have the motivations of a real person). Also, Shizuru has been pretty cool in both Chihaya's route and this one; she reminds me of Ciel from Tsukihime (who even has a similar name when you consider the Japanese pronunciation). Lucia being the same person as the ghost girl was a terrible Shyamalan twist, though; like many of those sorts of twists, it essentially relies on the character withholding information from the audience. (To be fair, given her unique ability to survive the VR thing, maybe she's just really good at compartmentalizing her mind.)

I also like the way that things like real-world government agencies, countries other than Japan, and technology invented after 1970 actually exist in this route's story, instead of everything being set in this weird mishmash of time periods, with a few handwaves about the characters being eccentric, the way the Nasuverse (for example) sometimes seems to be. The idea of Guardian having millions of members seems ridiculous on the face of it, but when you think about it, most of them are probably members of front organizations who don't know about the existence of Guardian proper.

More on Rewrite:

Chihaya's route has a great sense of humor, but it's impossible to take any of the serious parts, well, seriously. If it were just a little more lame then you could treat the whole route as a comedy, but instead the philosophical ruminations and the final battle just come off as silly and trite.

Shizuru's route was probably my favorite so far; I particularly enjoyed the way it called attention to how Kotarou is really a supporting character. The ending was really disappointing though -- instead of posing an interesting dilemma like Kotori's, the ambiguity undercuts both the tragic and happy interpretation of the ending.

Either Kotarou proclaimed his intention to survive using his power and Shizuru had faith in him... and then it leaves you wondering if he turned into a tree forever, which is lame and just a waste of narrative momentum, OR the speech at the end was supposed to be brave face hiding the fact that he's sacrificing himself, which besides being kind of cliche is muddled by the fact that his metamorphosis fits all the same cirumstances as Sakuya's, implying it's not necessarily permanent or death after all.

Lucia's route was such a mixed bag. Unlike some of the other stories it definitely feels like it recognizes itself as melodrama, which is fun but also makes it feel kind of out of place. There's also a lot of eyeroll-inducing "girls are like this, boys are like that" nonsense, and the route is longer than it really needed to be. On the other hand the ending is hilarious, it's like every disaster that ruined the protagonists' lives in the other stories was rolled together into one and then Ryukishi07 goes "nah just loving with you, they live happily ever after."

I agree with you there. Everyone except Shizuru has such stupid motivations, and you're clearly expected to take them seriously.
