Killer robot posted:It became so much better once I saw this: It's good they're getting color. Every time I go back to America to visit, I get confused by how much money I have on me, and have to sort through my bills in my wallet to figure out which ones to pay with. I've lived in Taiwan for nearly 7 years, and the money here is so simple. Red 100, light pink/purple 500's, blue 1000's. Three main bills, with green 200's and purple 2000's existing but not being commonly used. Open up my wallet, glance inside, instantly know what's what just due to the color. They're even sized slightly differently, with the larger bills being maybe a half-cm longer than each lesser bill, so that blind people can figure out which is which without without help. Even the coins are cool, because they have some ridged hologram effect on them. If you look at it one way, you see one image, look at it the other way, you see another. These images don't show the transition, but it's in those ridged parts on the coins. These are the new 10's. I think the images in the 0 are of the island itself, and the flower emblem. I forget the text in the top part. The 50, which shows '50' one way, and '五十', which is 50 in characters, the other way.

Swiss money is baller, naturally: People tend not to use credit cards or cashcards here, and it's pretty frequent that you end up handling 1kCHF (pronounced kilochuff) notes. They're huge. They recently tendered submissions to redesign the notes, and the winner was this, which I think are awesome spacebucks: In the end though I think they're not being used because people objected to the embryo.

Women Unveiled: Marc Garanger’s Contested Portraits of 1960s Algeria http://lightbox.time.com/2013/04/23/women-unveiled-marc-garangers-contested-portraits-of-1960s-algeria/ quote:General Maurice Challes, head of the French army, attacked the mountain villages occupied by two million people, some of whom had joined the Algerian resistance, the FLN. To deprive the rebels of their contacts with the villagers, he decided to destroy the villages and transfer the population into regroupment villages, a euphemism for concentration camps. Soon Garanger’s commanding officer decreed that the villagers must have identity cards: “Naturally he asked the military photographer to make these cards,” Garanger recalls. “Either I refused and went to prison, or I accepted. I understood my luck: it was to be a witness, to make pictures of what I saw that mirrored my opposition to the war. I saw that I could use what I was forced to do, and have the pictures tell the opposite of what the authorities wanted them to tell.”
