Attack on Titan is a very dark and grim series as one can tell by the fan works.

And have an updated Meet the Sasha.

Honestly, that's actually true. Fanworks tend to be created to fill a gap the existing work doesn't cater for, so the grimdarkiest shows get the most cheery, light-hearted fanworks and vice versa. Just look at all the horrible poo poo that's cropped up around My Little Pony... or don't, if you value your sanity.

And a lot of it is just the humor present in such stark thematic dissonance.

I recall seeing a YouTube promo for this anime back in the Fall. I'm really enjoying it. I keep wondering how they were able to build those walls.

They obviously have some technology beyond the basic mediaeval stuff. The spiderman grappling hooks and as you've said, the walls are testament to that. It'd be interesting to see if some of their elite soldiers have better gear, if it does take place in the future. Sort of like Book of the New Sun with its energy lances and what have you.

You can see in the OP that they have cannons and rifles, so they have knowledge of gunpowder weaponry at least.

The very first episode tells us it is 2000 years in the future.

Well poo poo, I sure missed that. I think? Anyway, wonder how that works. It'd make sense if they'd lost the infrastructure to make industrial/digital age tech, but they still have books about it and there are still those that understand it. Or maybe the inner city is a vastly different place. :haw: That armored titan definitely gave off a mechanical vibe to me... might've just been the steam, though.

That's not quite what the first episode said. It implied something about 2000 years, but it wasn't clear in what context.

Severely limited resources probably are the main contributor to returning to a more sustainable Medieval style of living. They've only got what's inside the walls after all, so they're probably highly lacking in a lot of materials needed for industrial and digital living.

That's true. I assumed it implied that this show was to us, from 2000 years in the future, but I guess it was pretty ambiguous.

Oh God yes. I was looking forward to how they would portray it. The QUALITY had me worried for a bit, even if they kept it mainly for relatively quiet scenes that didn't require much animation.

Also, Sasha owns so much. :allears:

It could just as easily work the other way around, or refer to two thousand years since the an indistinct event we can't fathom involving Titans or whatever, etc. Their calendar is much younger than that date, which I'm sure is deliberate.

I think my biggest complaint about this episode, aside from still shots(which seem to be becoming more frequent) was the Colossal Titan just kinda teleports in. One frame not there, next frame PEEKABOO! I dunno, it was kinda jarring for such a dramatic moment. Rest of all that was outstanding though.

edit: please make as many Sasha gifs as possible.

This is a totally legitimate complaint and I didn't notice it when reading the manga. That said, manga spoilers

Pickle: Inspected.
Yeah the colossal titan seems to appear in a bolt of lightning or something which makes me think something weird might be happening? Otherwise it doesn't make a lot of sense that they wouldn't see it coming. It actually threw me off enough that I thought that whole part was going to be a dream sequence at first.

I don't mind the level of stills - the art is quite nice anyway, and it presumably lets them save money for the flashy 3D gear sequences.

Also interesting that manga readers have been complaining about the pacing a bit for these first few episodes - personally I found it quite fast overall, especially with all the time skips.

No, like, the bolt of lightning happens, and then in the cloud of smoke, one frame it's not here, the very next frame, it is. No 2-3 frames of "appearing", just POOF! HEY GUYS, WHAT'S GOIN' ON ON THIS WALL

It felt kinda low-quality especially considering all that followed, is all.

And yeah, the stills are really good as far as stills go, but generally, too many stills aren't good for maintaining the flow of a show.

Other than wanting to get as much of the manga animated as possible, the pacing of the anime is so far superior to the manga. This beginning part of the manga flew by so fast that a lot of manga people are just now catching things that they missed, thanks to the anime. The 4 episodes so far have just covered the first 3 chapters, so it's only slightly slower.

Considering the animation quality for the beginning and last 5 minutes of the show, I'd still say its one of the better shows technically this season. And it's so good to see that Sasha is still the best character (and competent too!). Please, please, PLEASE don't die Sasha.

I caught up with the manga a couple months back, but I'm ashamed to say that when I watch this show I realize how much I had forgotten Sasha's awesomeness. Please forgive me :negative:.

One thing I didn't understand in both the manga and the show was why Eren was on the wall fixing the cannons even though he made a big deal of joining the Recon division. I realize its only the day after graduation, so do the new graduates have to spend time doing random work before joining a division?
