Yeah, this is a little ridiculous that the pay service I subscribe to specifically for simulcasts is way behind FILEZZZZ. Especially with this particular episode, which is like, a major point in their flagship series right now.

Besides Eren, the other ones who bit it were Thomas Wagner (blond guy), Mina Caroline (girl with hair tied), Nack Teaz, and Millius Zermusky. With Carla in the first episode, the named character death count is already at six.

Welp, I've spent most of the day reading the manga, and am well past where the anime is now, and it has only made me more excited to see the next episode(s) :allears:. And like other people have said, biggest difference is the training sequence episodes placement, in the manga the contents of episodes 3 and 4 happen after this plot arc instead of before and I'm not really sure which way I prefer it, I think it's because it sort of gives away something that would have stayed secret for all of maybe one episode, but anyways I loving love this series, I don't remember the last time an anime/manga got me this excited.

I can see the benefit of both. By showing the battle before the training (which if what the manga does, if I'm reading correctly) you know there's no hope and it's depressing to see these guys training and hoping to beat the titans. By showing the training before the battle, the story crushes your hopes because I honestly believed they were going to at least put up a fight.

I'm actually refreshed by the brutality and cruelty in the story so far. Sheer determination and hot-bloodedness saving the day is cool in TTGL and basically nowhere else. Everyone actually feels more important, even the Recon corps mooks who got mostly eaten in the first episode, because they're not a bunch of mooks who get slaughtered just so some fresh-outta-training kids can go and outdo them a few years later because SHONEN ANIME. Fighting titans is seriously dangerous poo poo and lots of human beings pour every ounce of themselves into it only to wind up a snack. Mikasa is the closest thing to a mary-sue shonen protagonist but she's cool about it and I'd rather it be her than Eren.

Speaking of Eren, I don't think he's really dead. This show already feels sort of FMA-ish. Maybe he'll get a kickass metal arm and leg :haw:

Not only that, but you feel some kind of attachment to those characters before they are brutally murdered by Titans. That's something the manga definitely lacked by showing the training after the fight.

I kind-of liked that in the manga because it laid down the gauntlet of the author to make the reader give a poo poo about them despite knowing that they were all Titan-food, and to his credit I think he succeeded.

Frankly, I don't like you
and I never have.
One thing I like that this part of the story does is it very effectively drives home the reason why humanity hasn't made any progress beyond the walls. Rookie or not, Eren was in the top five academy graduates and he got loving chumped in no time.

And then you consider that not every graduating class has a prodigy like Mikasa or someone who motivates the rookies like Eren. Most of their best soldiers all go inward, to join the Kings Guard and would never even see a titan their entire lives. The best that humanity can produce don't stand a chance, let alone the poor saps who actually go out and fight those things. And that was BEFORE they got smart.

Delays are unusual. Crunchyroll's process is really streamlined so any given delay is usually passing it on from further upstream.

God, *that* scene was way better done in the anime than in the manga. I'd recommend practicing self-restraint and not reading it until the anime's done - you'll get the most amazing experience that way. A good series is still good when spoiled, but when it's not? Pretty sure this one will be phenomenal.

This is what's really working for me, it's not exactly like they're short of knowledge and man power. Hell they even know HOW to kill the drat things just they can't ever get close enough to land the shot. The titans aren't this mysterious semmingly invincible enemy, they have a weakness and the army specifically trains and equips soldiers to hit it.

So here's a question for the manga people, that I would like answered with a mind to not spoiling anything. Of course, if the answer to the question is super spoily, just say so and I won't push the issue but: if you get swallowed whole, how do you die? Crushed to death in the esophagus? Are titans airtight on the inside? Stomach acid?

Extremely minor spoiler about titans eating stuff which should hopefully get covered as soon as within the next 4 or 5 episodes:
When a titan eats something it leaves it sitting there in the stomach digesting until there is nothing but bones left, which it regurgitates, we learn this in the aftermath of the titan attack

As far as cliffhangers go that was a cheap shot.
This episode actually followed a manga chapter almost perfectly, including the way it ended.

Kiamet posted:

The last scene was done so well. In the manga, the squad's annihilation is a lot more gory and seems to play out in a nightmarish slow-motion. In this episode it was quick and brutal, barely giving you time to process all the deaths, letting you feel the shock the characters must be feeling. Less violent than the manga, but just as horrifying.

Honestly it's just as violent as the manga, more-so in some ways, Eren's post-chomp flipping has him bouncing off a few roof pieces instead of the chomp straight into landing on his face, the high-five which isn't even in the manga. Just faithful representations of the violence in the manga sort of makes it more violent to me, since instead of just getting snapshots of an action you get to see the whole thing.

I feel like there was an animation error and it really bugs me because I see it EVERY TIME when that dude gets literally pasted in midair a huge grey rectangle goes flying off through the air. I'm guessing that was supposed to be something else like equipment or something but didn't get rendered properly, since I bet the soldiers don't carry around large pieces of sheet metal on their backs.

It was either supposed to be a broken piece of 3d movement gear or was supposed to be a placeholder for a broken piece of 3d movement gear that they didn't get around to adding detail for.

The depiction of the Titan remind me of the BETA from Muv Luv Alternative.

Great episode. Didn't expect that at all. Glad they did that though as Eren was kinda annoying and his constant running into battle thoughtlessly SHOULD have gotten him killed. Looking forward to where this series goes from there. I'm guessing the blond kid will function as the protagonist the rest of the way
