Pastry of the Year posted:It is called a hamburger stand (or hot dog stand, or lemonade stand, or whatever) because there is no place for the customers to sit as in a more traditional food service situation: food is ordered and consumed while standing. And in the United States, a diner got its name from the diner car of a train. When rail passenger service declined in the United States, many of the old diner cars were sold to people who would stick them on the side of the road, add a kitchen in the back, and add a door to the front. The old diner cars were too rare to be used like that later, so diners just followed the same sort of layout in later buildings. Now the word "diner" often means just a small "greasy spoon."

booshi posted:Just a minor correction. HDMI is not just DVI with audio. Yeah, they use the same standard (which is why adapters work so well), but DVI can drive higher-resolution displays, while HDMI can also include ethernet and a CEC connection (allows for control of other devices through HDMI). Isn't there also some DRM stuff that can be sent over HDMI as well?

That reminds me: I just discovered that Mr. Pibb, the Dr. Pepper clone made by Coca-Cola, is not available anymore. It has been replaced by "Pibb Xtra," a version that has "cinnamon flavor" added to the original formula. No longer can I make the old joke that "Pepper may be a doctor, but Pibb is a gentleman." Now Pibb is nothing but a dumb teenager on a skateboard who talks in catchphrases.

DrBouvenstein posted:Cinnamon flavor? Really? I just though Pibb Extra had more caffeine. So did I, which is why I put skeptical quote marks around "cinnamon flavor." Also according to Coca-Cola, "its bold taste and graphics appeal to young adults who are looking to get the most out of life and the most out of their soft drink. It appeals to teens who are just gaining independence from home and looking for things to call their own. The soft drink enables them to have an uninhibited, fun and unconventional attitude and touts the sweet, refreshing bold taste they need to express their independence." I must be drinking it wrong.

What are we supposed to drink together once you're gone? Mr. Pibb: Try Pibb Xtra! Since this thread has cycled on back to animal penis facts... The Lesser water boatsman is a small aquatic insect. The male produces his mating call by rubbing his penis along ridges on his abdomen. This mating call is the loudest sound, relative to body size, in the entire animal kingdom. Edit: Crap, thought this was the Facts that make your brain explode thread.
