Just curious, what was the general initial response to HAA? Did it start this positive and then cool off? Or was everyone pretty cool to it on first listen?

I kind of got in after Alive 2007 happened, but from what I can tell, the common opinion on Human After All went from "this is too repetitive" to "yeah, I guess that makes sense" after Alive happened. I still personally enjoy the album, but I don't think there was ever a rabid fanbase for HAA.

Haha, wow. I knew opinion of it was pretty low until Alive 07, but I wasn't sure whether people tried to convince themselves they liked it at first. I guess not.

People thought the same thing after Tool's 10,000 Days leaked as well. Those were both pretty hilarious to watch.

I think this is just how they roll. HAA is more like homework, this is more like discovery. Maybe the next one will be more of a throw back to the repetitive electro stuff.

My first "get the gently caress outta here" moment of this album is Pharrell saying "Lose yourself to dance" over and over and over again in his forced falsetto. The underlying track is primo, but c'mon Pharrell.

I think it's mostly boring and cheesy, but if nothing else I'm impressed at how different it is. It makes me wonder why their first three albums were comparatively so similar-sounding.

e: there's a lot of Glados autotune on this album. Not Daft Punk robot voices, but Glados robot voices.

Hey Ma, who's that band I like? Oh yeah, Hall & Oates.
The Grooveshark playlist is in reverse, watch out.

I'm one track in (I listened to Contact and half of Doin' It Right before I realized the playlist was in reverse). So far, I'm in love. It's everything I wanted and more.

As for HAA, I personally hated it when it came out. Even now, there are only a few tracks I can bear (mostly thanks to Alive 2007, as others said).

I don't know, I can't dance at all, and I'm groovin all around with the album and I'm about 5 songs in. Maybe your funk meter is down because Instant Crush has some great stuff in it.

Album has Phillip-Glass-Esque sounding material, straight up jazz, aboriginal sounding stuff, fantasia-esque soundscapes, classical strings, funk guitar, a myriad of drumming styles, Georgio Moroder. This album contains pretty much every style of music of the past 100 years in it for god's sake.

it's funny that you're impressed by them "doing something different" when all the tracks are limp approximations of the worst that 70s disco and the cheesiest, most unimaginative adult contemporary has to offer. they've hired in a bunch of old people to secure an alibi for making the most generic, bloodless album ever. if you're seriously impressed by the drumming or any of the other instrumental work for that matter, you've been exposing yourself to seriously subpar music for your entire life.
