I know items that sell get a higher ranking. Recency is supposed to play a factor in showing newer items as well, but it's hard to really tell how much it makes a difference. I know items I have in my shop that are 2-3 months old don't get as many views as newly listed items, but then again the majority of my newly listed items seem to be ones I sell often. Unless they are always tweaking it some how, I am surprised no one has really figured out how to 'game the system'. There are always ebbs and flows which I always wonder about. It seems so odd to me I can have a week of 5-7 sales a day, then a day of zero sales, then a day of 10-12 sales, then back down to zero sales the next...I've never been able to figure out anything different on the days I have tons of sales and the days I have none, stats look virtually identical as far as any kind of view or traffic numbers go. For awhile Saturday was my worst day, then it started getting good, and then back down again.

Here's a bit of a different request: my wife has a small wooden chest that she's looking to decorate and sell on Etsy (or elsewhere). She wants to woodburn and stain it, but she's just not sure exactly what to do with it. It's 15" long, 7 1/2" deep, and 6 1/2" tall. The wood is about 3/4" thick, so it's a sturdy box. She handmade it in the first place. Here's a few pics: My wife has tried to emphasize "upcycled" materials with her Etsy shop, and this chest is mostly upcycled wood. She just doesn't know what to do with the design. She's drat good with painting, drawing, and 2D design in general, but she's just... drawing a blank I guess. Any ideas for this chest, goony or otherwise?

Have a small giveaway on my blog: http://retrostationstore.blogspot.com/2013/05/zelda-heart-container-giveaway.html Sales are pretty regular in my shop still. About 1-2 items a week. I just sold my Pikmin tissue box for $40, so that felt really good. @Railing Kill - I don't have anything to say about a design for that box, but I will say emphasizing "upcycled" and "handmade" is really important

She handmade it in the first place. Here's a few pics: I've had luck with coffee staining wood (as long as it's not left in the sun, it also grows gradually darker over the following few months). If she wants to try that route, she should use cold-brewed black coffee. Couple applications. Sanding till the wood is soft as silk prior to staining makes it even better. The project I used it on, I finished it with coconut oil (only because it was all I had on hand, actually), and it turned out as the most delicious smelling thing I've ever made. If she wants to go the environmentally friendly route (especially if she's wanting to emphasize upcycled, this helps, as alt staining methods are often less VOC heavy), she could also look into things like tea staining or using vinegar soaked steel wool (or nails) for staining. I remember reading a guide about making ebonized wood using vinegar-soaked steel wool stain followed by a tea stain. Good luck to her on it!

Oh for gently caress's sake I finally set up a shop and after that's all said and done I think to look in this thread because I knew I used to have one and couldn't remember a damned thing about it, and I found my old username. And logged in, and it has the shop name I wanted to use. Does anyone know if I can cancel my old account (it had one sale, in 2008) and switch shop names? The new shop is here http://www.etsy.com/shop/SolsJewellery (gonna need a different backdrop I think) but I really want to use the old shop name again because I've used the name on and off for my artsy stuff for years.

After a bit of slacking, today I was really productive and posted a bunch of new things. Mostly purses and bags, which have been a smaller part of my shop in the past. I have coin purses, clutches, and what I'm really proud of: Handwoven purses with thrifted neckties as the strap! I've been looking for something to use as a strap for awhile, as the purse bases piled up.

Could anyone recommend me a shop that could make me a simple custom silver charm? I'm sure there's a bunch out there, but it's hard to tell who's good and will be responsive and who won't.

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding your post, but can't you just transfer your listings over to your "old" shop now that you've been able to login again? I know it's a pain to re-enter/copy and paste all the information and photos and stuff over, but it doesn't look like you have too many listings yet. Otherwise, I think you'd need to contact the support team for assistance; according to the Help page closing an account won't free up the names associated with it: https://www.etsy.com/help/article/53 And Dr. Chaco, those handbags with the tie straps are fantastic!

Thanks! I was pretty pleased when I came up with that. I really did have a pile of purses building, and no good strap ideas were making themselves known. The ties are perfect, though--patterned, available in lots of colors, very durable as straps. Also, dirt cheap at thrift stores, compared to what they must have cost new! I forgot to mention, I do have a GOONYGOON coupon code for 10% off.

I rebooted my shop today! I've spent most of the past year doing in person sales (special orders and things) for people at work, but because I know them I tend to charge them cost, so it's been hell on my wallet. I got a business partner (read: my best friend who is highly motivated in, well, everything) who's been pushing me to re-open my Etsy shop after I did a craft show (my first craft show! We got rained out, but it was worth it.) Anyway, that's a lot of words, look at my stuff: https://www.etsy.com/shop/PeaceLoveGeeky?ref=si_shop Here's a headband! I'm thinking of adding a listing for blankets--those have been really popular with the people I work with, but I know they're pretty ubiquitous amongst the crocheting set. I suppose it can't hurt. These are freaking fantastic.

Sunsasa is my shop! I think I posted it in this thread once before, months ago. I've made a lot of improvements since then. I sell original acrylic paintings, sculpted & painted jewelry, and a few vintage things from New Zealand. I just added some new bird whistles and ocarinas today, and I'm planning to add some glazed/fired ceramic sculptures and resin flower petal/insect jewelry. I may also bring back the "living walls" I make out of lichens and bark. I make all sorts of stuff. Here's a little sample!

Had my shop off for a while but just turned it back on. There are some gnarly forest fires happening here in Colorado and so I've decided to donate my sales to the Pike's Peak Humane Society now through at least the 21rst. They are taking in displaced animals from people that have lost their homes. https://www.hsppr.org/donateonline https://www.etsy.com/shop/sewsmooth Some more recent cats in ties.

I make wallets and other little leather things. I began the shop with the idea that I would only make stuff that did not involve metal hardware; aside from the lanyard and the keychain, that's still how it is. Critiques are welcome! I know my photography can use some work, and I also am concerned about my prices. I would like to raise my prices, but I do not want to scare anyone away from a shop that only has three sales. https://www.etsy.com/shop/MWRleather I'm pretty proud of these little fellas that I posted recently: I would like to move up to larger pouches and bags once I can justify the expense.

I like those a lot, they look very well-made. Your shop banner is great, too. Have you tried messing with the brightness and contrast of your photos in an editing program? That's usually all it takes to make things shot against a white background look really good. A light box makes a world of difference too, especially for things like leather that can pick up a glare. They're super easy to make and as small as your work is it wouldn't take a big on at all. Here's a rundown on how to make one cheaply. http://www.wikihow.com/Create-an-Inexpensive-Photography-Lightbox I can't recommend this enough for anyone taking pictures of small three dimensional pieces. Guess I should rep for my mother's Etsy shop. One of her hobbies has always been making clothing and other misc. crafts. My wife and I had been telling her she to sell them for a long time but she was never so sure of herself. We finally convinced her to set up an Etsy shop. She's been in charge of making the crafts and I've been handling everything on the business end. She hates everything to do with business, so I set up her shop and everything associated with it. She's starting with some beach/tote bags and recycled wine bottle glassware. Coming soon on the shop will be scarves, newsboy hats, boot cuffs, fishing flies, and more miscellaneous items. Here are some of the items she has so far: http://www.etsy.com/shop/ArcadianAccessories

Has anyone else seen a lull in orders? I haven't had a single order in like... two weeks, and normally I'm pretty busy. Also, I'm finding the custom order request system kind of annoying since people use it like a convo when if they looked at my listing all their questions would be answered. Sigh.

Well I know this isn't impressive for all you Etsy superstars who sell a dozen pieces of jewelry a day, but I'm super excited that this month, my shop has turned a profit. All my materials are fully paid for, including what I used for prototyping, practice, gifts, and some things which haven't exactly been runaway successes. Just gotta keep trying new ideas and hoping more will catch on, but it's pretty nice to have a self-supporting hobby.

I wanted to let you guys know that the Help Colorado sale I did ended up bringing in 736$ for Colorado flood relief. Several of you were instrumental in helping me raise the funds, so I wanted you all to know what was going to happen with the money. Currently I'm planning to split the total down the middle and donate half to the flood relief base station in Longmont and the other half to the station in Loveland. Both of them are the city hubs for helping flood victims--providing food, supplies, shelter, information, national guard headquarters--and they're the lynchpin for helping all the mountain towns in the two counties that were decimated the most. I wanted to help the little guys because they're doing A LOT and don't have the same kind of resources to pull on as some of the big charities.

I'm really proud of this thing I made as kind of a Halloween decoration/art piece/display item. Here's the listing. I feel weird listing something so expensive, but it cost me a lot to buy all the supplies and required a lot of work to put together. Hopefully someone likes it enough to buy it and justify all the time and effort.
