Kris's Quick Tip videos are pretty good, the one he did for horns was fairly simple though. He showed 2 techniques, one involved painting the base color in bone white, then a layer of a yellowy or light brown color starting about 2/3 distance from the tip all the way to the tip, then a darker brown color about 1/3 distance from the tip. That was pretty simple. I think the second technique involved a little bit of shading with the colors but I can't really remember. For tabletop purposes both were fine but the first method was easiest. If I have the time, I prefer to do something like bone white for the base, then wet blend in dark brown for the tip (about 1/3 distance from the tip). You can also go with medium brown or even black, cows have all sorts of different horn colors. (I grew up in Texas so I used to see a lot of longhorns)

Verdugo posted:How did you do the armor? It's an effect I want to use on some models, I can never get it down correctly. Luckily I have a blog post about to go live with the info, so I've already typed out most of what I hope you're looking for. I used Vallejo for everything on the armor: Primer was black then dusted with grey for preshading, the base color was 3 pts Dark Green, 3 pts Goblin Green, 1 pt Dead Flesh and sprayed through airbrush. I used Lester Burley's Heavy Body Black wash mix all over then did his Flesh wash mixed with a couple drops of green ink on a few places. Then I drybrushed with a Dark Green/Goblin Green 1:1 mix, then mixed in Dead Flesh a bit at a time over 2 more layers of drybrushing. By the end it was pure Dead Flesh and it came out with a cool almost-edge highlighting look you can really see on the back of the legs: I came out a bit cleaner than I might have wanted originally, but I ended up liking it. I'm working on the tentacled dreadnought I posted earlier in the thread with the same color mixes, but I'm going to give oil pin washes a try for the first time. I hope that's helpful!

I read HKR's airbrush post but didn't see what kind of mask to get for airbrushing. Is something like this good enough? e: Woops, that's what I get for sleeping late and waking early. I use this and I'm pretty sure a bunch of other folks here do as well - I figure as far as my lungs are concerned $25 is not a high price to pay for some extra protection, plus it's comfortable, and I can scare the poo poo out of the kids. e: Ha, that's the one you originally linked. Look at how correct this fukken guy is. In seriousness, that's a great mask for the price. The replacement filters are pretty cheap on Amazon as well.

If you spray varnish or use oils/spirits I recommend shelling out an additional $30 for an organic vapor/acid gas filter (60923). The 6001 doesn't keep out oil or synthetic vapor. e: I'm pretty paranoid about this stuff. I never noticed that it was a throw-away unit. Though admittedly with hobby use, even a disposable unit would last for years; unlike my mask from the welding shop that needed new filters every month.

I added bulk to the thighs, put on the shoulder pads with a little bit of weathering and started on the next gun. Being closer to completing these first three I'm starting to consider what's next so input is welcome. Do you think it should be more regular dudes, command, support, specialists, heavier types or what? Suggestions will be met with deadly gratitude.

You pose your model's stance quite well most of the time Hellbeard. I'd like to see your take on a heavy lugging around an autocannon or such. I get the feeling you'd do a good job portraying the weight of the weapon, compared to most figures that look like they're easily swinging around 60+ lbs of metal.IrvingWashington posted:Just popped in to say that the Sotar 20/20 is back on Amazon.com at $70. 12 left. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BROVIO/.
